Key Information

Day 1

To the Abruzzo Mountains

Hiking in the Abruzzo mountains, Italy. Photo: Host/Wildlife Adventures

Hiking

1-2hrs · 492ft up · 492ft down

Meet your host at Rome Airport, hop in the van and drive through rural Italy to the town of Pescasseroli – your base for the next few days. Check into your guesthouse and meet up with your guide who will give you the lowdown on the rewilding efforts in the area and brief you on the adventure to come. Head out for an easy afternoon hike to get your first taste of Abruzzo National Park and catch the sunset before tucking into an Italian feast for dinner.

Day 2

Searching for chamois

Group Hike, Abruzzo NP, Italy. Photo: Host/Wildlife Adventures

Hiking

6-8hrs · 2625ft up · 2625ft down

After an early breakfast you'll head out for a big circular hike in the southern area of the Abruzzo National Park, past rock walls, along deep glacial valleys and through beech forests. Walking silently and respectfully you'll see one of the most important populations of Apennine chamois, meekly grazing between pastures and rocky walls. You may also see griffon vultures circling high above. Enjoy your packed lunch high up in the peaks before returning through forests to cap off a wild first day in the Abruzzos.

Day 3

Sunrise wolf tracking

Wildlife Tracking

6-8hrs · 1640ft up · 1640ft down

Another early start as you sip a pre-dawn coffee and head out to try to glimpse one of Abruzzo's most enigmatic residents – the wolf. Hike through the twilight to a higher altitude where the wolves are known to pass through. After sunrise, head back down the valley and visit the Museum of the Apennine Wolf in Civitella Alfedena to learn more about the wolf's history of persecution and subsequent revival now happening in the Apennines. Enjoy lunch in a rural village before hiking up to the Bisegna Refuge high in the mountains where you'll spend the night. You'll then set out into the twilight for an evening walk to listen to the howling of the wolves.

Day 4

Golden eagles in Sirente-Velino Regional Park

Wildlife watching, Central Apennnines, Italy. Photo: Host/Wildlife Adventures

Wildlife Tracking

6hrs · 1312ft up · 1312ft down

Rise before dawn to head out for a sunrise session to see the wildlife, often most active first thing in the morning. After breakfast, you'll hike through forests that are frequented by bears, martens and wild cats. Your tracker guide will lead the group through the forests, pointing out signs of bears and hoping for sightings. The guide is also on hand to ensure a safe and respectful passage through the home of these creatures who were close to extinction here but are making a comeback thanks to the rewilding work being done. Finish off another epic day with a traditional Italian feast.

Day 5

One last sunrise with the wildlife, return to Rome

Hiking, Abruzzos, Italy. Photo: Host/Wildlife Adventures

Wildlife Tracking

2-4hrs · 984ft up

You'll be used to the pre-dawn adventures by now as you step out for one last sunrise trek in the wilderness and hopefully another glimpse of a wolf, bear, or wild boar going about their morning business. After breakfast, it's time to jump back in the van and bid farewell to the mountains as you return to Rome in time for your flight home.

What is the food like?

Breakfast at your accommodation is a classic international affair with cereals, bread, pastries, and homemade cakes. Lunches are not included - you will buy packed lunches from the guesthouse or local shops and bakeries each morning to take with you on the wildlife tracking excursions. Please budget $10-15 per day for your lunches. Each evening you'll be enjoying traditional Italian dishes including maccheroni alla chitarra - a special type of spaghetti, soup with orapi (wild spinach) and beans, gnocchetti, and grilled meat. The wider region outside the rewilding area has a strong sheep farming culture, so plenty of local dairy products are available such as pecorino, ricotta, caciocavallo, and a rare goat's cheese called Marzolina.

Vegetarians, vegans, and other dietary requirements and allergies can be accommodated - please just request on your passenger info form.

What is the accommodation like?

Pescasseroli

Your base for the adventure is in Pescasseroli, a beautiful and atmospheric rural Italian mountain village. You'll stay in one of the village's family-owned hotels and guesthouses, such as The Hotel Iris which provides traditional Italian hospitality surrounded by pine trees and mountain views. You'll stay in twin-share rooms. Depending on availability, you may stay at Hotel Valle dell'Oro, Della Piazza B&B, or the Albergo La Torre in neighboring Civitella Alfedena.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked for an extra charge (subject to availability). See Optional Extras for the price.

Outside view of Bisegna Refuge
Bisegna Mountain Hut

Terraegna refuge located in the municipality of Bisegna is a newly renovated mountain refuge in a remote location high in the mountains and only accessible by foot. The refuge provides warm Italian hospitality and cuisine, making a magical spot to rest in the mountains. The refuge has a main area with a wood-burning stove and a cozy dining area for meals - the perfect place to relax after a long day's tracking. You'll stay in a shared sleeping area with bunk beds and a bathroom with a shower and toilet. You'll be able to leave your main luggage at the hotel and only take what you need for the overnight at the hut.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. This covers the nights in Pescasseroli - the night at Bisegna mountain refuge does not have a private room option. Please request this at the time of booking.

This trip has been rated as Moderate

This is a moderate adventure that can be managed and enjoyed by anyone with basic to good fitness levels. The duration of the days' hiking depends on the wildlife, and on average you'll be hiking for several hours each day with elevation gains of up to 1,300-2,600 ft, however, there are plenty of stops as you wait silently with binoculars to view the various wildlife. This trip can include early starts and late finishes as these are the best hours for wildlife spotting, but time to rest in the middle of the day is factored in.

Temperatures in the Abruzzo Mountains during the summer months average a pleasant 68°F. May and October will be cooler with averages around 59°F. Rainfall is lowest in July and highest in May and October, so be sure to pack a rain jacket, though the region gets a lot of continuous sunshine in the summer.

Would definitely recommend

This trip was a wonderful experience, well organised with a very experienced guide. There is no guarantee of seeing specific animals, however with good conditions, luck, minimising our presence and some patience, we were rewarded with seeing two bears, a wolf, chamois and plenty of deer in their natural habitat doing their own thing and living their own lives with less human impact affecting their behaviour.

Our guide Valeria was fantastic, super knowledgeable about all the aspects of the area and history, the research and rewilding work, and the animals and their habits. She adapted our activities based on the conditions and our feedback on how we were managing, and her experience of what wildlife we may be able to see.

The area is beautiful and glorious to walk in. The packing list is helpful, we had some wet cold weather and a couple of hours wildlife watching while not moving got colder than I had expected. The itinerary gives a good indication of the type of hikes and elevation involved, although the day-to-day will change depending on the conditions and group. The moderate fitness rating sounds about right, the hikes we had were a couple of hours long with breaks and wildlife watching in between.

I would definitely recommend this trip for those wanting to spend time in nature with a chance to see animals in the wild, can appreciate patience and have an interest in coexisting with wildlife, and can enjoy an organised trip where the hard work planning everything is done for you!

I would highly recommend this trip for obviously those into wildlife who want to see wild bears and wolves (no guarantee of specific creatures of course, for the record we saw a brief glimpse of a wolf at our first binoculars session morning of day 2, and two bears at our last on the evening of day 4). These animals were still a very long way away. But I'd also recommended this tour of Italy's Abruzzo Mountains for those who enjoy hiking through various habitats, as we went up and over many a mountain with the scenery and underfoot constantly changing from woodlands, thick forests, spaced out forests, open plain grassland, snow/ice (yep we went up that high) and everything in between. If you missed the word in that review - up, there's lot of hiking up. I'm usually around middle of the fitness level of a tour group, but in this I was at the bottom of the rankings. But you can't plan that when booking as you don't know who else will be on your tour. But with the group I was in I found I drifted behind when ascending, and I did have to stop at times. There is a lot of ascending, but I never felt unsafe or anything like that. So it's a basic long walk as other than fitness angle you might face, you're not crawling over boulders, wading through rivers, rock climbing up cliff faces, repelling down on ropes, jumping over crevices or anything like that. You'll enjoy the hikes, as I said awesome scenery.

The binocular sessions, even our guide Valeria told us they were going to be boring (although this to her is a fun hobby she regularly does, and you've got to admire someone who has made a career out of something they enjoy. The old find something you love you'll never work a day in your life thing. But there's lots of 3hr standing or sitting (depending on location) or even being hemmed into cracks in rocks interrupted by Arctic levels of cold wind gusts, so uncomfortably that it makes flying economy from Australia to Italy to get to the Rome airport pickup seem enjoyable in comparison. On that pickup, waiting until 2pm is a bit of a waste of most of the day, it would be better if it was 10am or something like this.

The Iris Hotel, our base in Pescasseroli, was a nice basic hotel. Plenty of space both in the room and common areas. Better than other hotels used in rival company like minded travelers' tours. I mean it has comfortable beds, hot water and good water pressure. Very friendly and helpful staff. Room is cleaned by housekeeping daily. You get free breakfast (a basic buffet) and a three course dinner every night (unless you choose to do a late night binocular thing then you get a packed dinner (sandwich, a couple of apricots, bottle of water, yes I agree they could have done a better job of that one). Lunch you do your own thing as around the middle of the day is free time. With our group this was going into town, although I didn't go to one as you're just so full from the breakfast and know the dinner will be very filling. Town (and places to buy food) are about 15 - 20 minutes walk from the Iris hotel. It's a laid back quiet not too touristy town.

One of the nights (day 3 on our trip) you stay at a lodge you've hiked up a mountain to reach. It's a backpacker hostel type dorm you sleep in (everyone in the same room). Dinner isn't as good as at Iris, still three courses though, but you've got to remember its hard to transport stuff up there. We had a vegetarian in our group and of course only one meal is prepared due to the lugging stuff up there factor. I had no issue with that although I think they could have come up with a bit more creative dish. Breakfast is a basic buffet (although not as all you can eat as Hotel Iris of course as there is only a set amount of food up there). You can buy soft drinks, alcohol, t-shirts up there though.

I'll also briefly compare it to a second bear orientated Much B Adventures trip I just completed called Hiking and Bear Watching in Romania. I'd recommend both tours, but if seeing wild bears up fairly close is what you are after, you're better off to do Romania. Italy tour has more hiking, and you see a lot more scenery and a variety of ecosystems. Italy packs more into each day. Both are worth doing if you've got the time.

We had a great time during this trip. It was our first time with much better adventures and our first time in the Abruzzo region, but we're looking forward to come back in the future. Our guide was nothing but exceptionally helpful, friendly and motivating. The area is incredible beautiful. The accommodation was nice with great food and present even for our very early mornings. We did not find the hikes to challenging, there is one bigger trip but with very rewarding views and there was always time to make a small pause to adapt the clothing and drink or eat something. The packing list was very helpful and did not note anything we did not use during the trip. 10/10 overall, love to come back in the future!

We had a great time in the Abruzzo mountains and enjoyed every moment. The guides went up and above to let us feel cared for, gave great insights into the rewilding projects, behaviour of the animals and interaction between humans and nature, which made the trip even more unique. It was a nice mixture of hiking and wild watching, and the time in the mountain hut was the best experience.

Great experience

Returned from the trip last week and still thinking about it. What a memorable experience it was. Set in a stunningly beautiful part of the world, I learnt to get closer to nature. Our guide, Andrea, was full of interesting information about the history and behaviours of the wolves, bears, birds, area, etc. Although we were only there 5 days it felt like a couple of weeks given how much we covered. From early morning tracking of wolves and bears as the sun rose to late evening strolls, I found myself relaxing in to the natural surroundings and appreciating the natural world. Andrea is clearly passionate about nature and was always happy to tell his stories and answer questions. I learnt a lot and it’s sparked a number of interests in me. We were the first tour of the season so a bit early for bears but we saw everything else, including the wolves. But there’s plenty of evidence around as you trek through the mountains. I’m not exactly a frequent hiker so found a couple of the walks challenging. I even skipped one of them, which was fine. If you’re used to walking and can walk up a sustained incline for an hour or two you’ll be fine. The others in the group had no issues. The hotel was perfect. The food was great. The locals are traditional - it’s a lovely village. And Kate and David who joined us in the group were wonderful and interesting people. It made the experience all the better. A wonderful experience - very unique. I would do it all over again. It was a sad journey back to the airport!

It was a very good, very intense experience in an incredibly beautiful area. Andrea was an excellent and informative guide. We were lucky enough to see a wolf on the first day, quite close, and a wild boar, chamoix and a golden Eagle the next. No bears! The early mornings and very late evening meals plus the heat of the climbs was a challenge. The night in the refuge was great, wonderfully hosted by Valeria: definitely the best meal of the trip. Descent was a bit of a route march from which my knee is still recovering! I learnt a lot about rewilding in a very different context to the UK, I want to learn more about wolves and I would love to return to the area!

Thea(October 2023)

A great experience. Our guide Domenico was super friendly and went above and beyond to make this trip enjoyable. The national park is stunning and it was an absolute privilege to see the bears, wolves and wild boars in their natural environment. I did not even mind getting up early during this holiday! I highly recommend this trip.

Great experience on this adventure. Real chance to switch off and just focus on nature and getting to know your group and guides without having to make plans and worry about logistics. The guides were knowledgeable and passionate. Staying in the mountain refuge was a highlight and of course seeing wolves, wild boar and stags. Yummy food, an interesting schedule of activities and falling into a comfy bed every night feeling satisfied with a fun and busy day ticked all the boxes for our holiday.

What an incredible trip! My first one with MBA, but definitely not my last. The big hike on the first day was tough, but has amazing views and we could go at our own pace. We saw a few chamois and some griffin vultures too! The early starts were early, 4-5am, but it’s the best time to see bears and wolves and that’s what we’re here for. We saw 5 wolves in total, and each felt like an absolute privilege (including 1 that had made a kill, and another 2 that crossed the road in front of us! It took our breathe away). We were very close to a resting mamma bear with cubs, but couldn’t see them behind rocks. Despite not seeing them it was wonderful to know they were there. The guides were incredible, Andrea in particular went over and above every single day, he is so knowledgeable and passionate about wildlife, and really fun. Sitting for 2+ hours in a meadow could have been a little tedious, but Andrea made it joyful. The mountain refuge felt like such a special place. A real highlight of the trip. The main accommodation exceeded expectations. I would absolutely recommend this trip to anyone that feels drawn to the types of activities listed. Just book it, it’s extremely special 🐺 💚🐻

Emma(July 2023)

I really enjoyed this trip and would recommend it to anyone and everyone. The guides were amazing and we saw lots of wildlife and even signs of bears. The whole team were great and the group I was with was great. 100% recommend this trip

Amanda(June 2023)

Great Trip, great experience, would love to visit this area again.

Sally(May 2023)

Very knowledgeable, friendly and punctual guides who really looked after us. Friendly group and great food back at the Inn, with friendly and helpful staff. Outstanding views and manageable long hikes - but not a march. Definitely recommend.

Sarah(October 2022)

Fantastic experience. Really knowledgable guide and great group

Rachel(September 2022)

A beautiful part of the world. We were unlucky with our particular guide but lucky with the animal sightings - it was so special to see a bear. The hotel was lovely, great food and hospitality. The mountain lodge was great too, although you need to take at least a blanket as they said they supplied sheets, but these were only for the bottom of the bed. A sit mat would be useful too as sometimes where you sit for viewings is very dusty, and walking poles would help with the hills. The binoculars supplied were excellent. Having a small group size was great, and dawn and dusk walks with midday breaks to enjoy the hotel and village worked beautifully. The long day walk was longer the outlined in the trip description, but I think trips like this tend to be modified according to the conditions and where the animals are know to be. The best place to eat was just by the Hotel Iris, a gorgeous family run farm stay place called Agriturismo Maneggio Vallecupa

Catherine(July 2022)

Just returned from four amazing nights in the Appenines. Lots of hiking, beautiful views, excellent company, all topped off by the amazing sights of wolves, chamois, deer and even a bear!

Steve(July 2022)

A fabulous trip! We were lucky enough to see both a wolf (at very close quarters) and a bear.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 130kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Our Rewilding Adventures occur in areas actively undergoing a process of ecological restoration known as rewilding. Increasingly, scientists and environmental activists see rewilding as a key solution to the ecological crises facing the planet. At Much Better Adventures, we have closely followed this youthful movement, and it is clear that tourism has a role in helping to fund rewilding projects and show our adventurers the ecological transformations happening on the ground. Our trips explore these areas and particularly the species that are returning to the wilderness.

On any of our Rewilding Adventures, you'll be guided by expert wildlife trackers with a deep understanding of the rewilding efforts and the ecological improvements occurring in the areas they live and work in. You will search for and learn about keystone species such as wolves and bison, which are either expanding from small historical numbers or being actively reintroduced. You'll see up close returning tree coverage and wildflower meadows, and even witness rivers running clearer due to the land growing wilder and withholding sediments. We aim for our Rewilding Adventures to instill a sense of hope that the damage human activity has caused to the wild places on our planet can be reversed.

Every reservation we take on a Rewilding Adventure directly supports and positively impacts the area where your adventure takes place. Tourism provides a sustainable revenue stream to the local community, boosting the social and economic benefits from conservation and rewilding work, and therefore the incentives to support it.

Included in the trip cost is also a Rewilding Levy of 5% which goes directly to the rewilding project connected to the trip. On top of this, the Much Better Adventures Foundation channels an additional 5% of our revenues (not profits) from every reservation to support reforestation and rewilding projects that advance our goal to protect the world's wild places, one adventure at a time.

While we acknowledge that our Rewilding Adventures have a carbon footprint due to the need to travel to them, for all reservations with Much Better Adventures, 5% of our revenues (not profits) go into our Foundation, primarily focused on supporting World Land Trust to ensure our trips achieve Net-Zero emissions.

We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

The tap water in this part of Italy is safe to drink. Please bring along a reusable bottle or two to take with you on the wildlife tracking excursions.

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme highs, where limited shade and high humidity can also be a factor. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but hydration, proper clothing, and sun protection are essential.

Before traveling, consider your ability to be active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have concerns – especially if you have any cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two prior to the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).

If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.

For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
