Trek through the mesmerizing High Tatras in winter - 48 miles of untouched mountains with matching views

Traverse untracked powder and lush pine forests in Slovakia’s remote backcountry over a long weekend

Soak your aches away in the revitalizing, steamy waters of one of the region's natural thermal springs

Key Information

Day 1

The High Tatras

Hiking the Tatras

Travel into the High Tatras Mountains that separate Slovakia and Poland and head for the charming mountain village of Stara Lesna, where you’ll receive a warm welcome at the friendly, family-run hotel you’ll be staying in. After settling into your room, head down to meet your traveling companions over dinner and relax into the vacation rhythm.

Day 2

Hike to the Green Lake

High Tatras, Slovakia
Hiking
6hrs · 10mi · 2297ft up · 2297ft down

Climb to the remote, vivid turquoise waters of the aptly named Green Lake, 5070 feet above sea level - a particularly magical location in winter. After exploring the shoreline and grabbing some hard to believe photos, relax in a landscape of snow-capped peaks, wildflower meadows, and rolling green pine forest. As this trip strikes that all-important balance between adventure and relaxation, balance out your day with some serious sauna and jacuzzi time back in the village.

Day 3

Winter hiking to Velicke Lake

High Tatras Winter hikers, Slovakia
Hiking
6hrs · 8mi · 1640ft up · 1640ft down

Today you'll be hiking into the winter wonderland that is the High Tatras Mountains. Relaxation earned, soak in a natural thermal pool and let your worries (and muscle knots) fade away.

Day 4

A final hike before heading home

High Tatras, Slovakia
Hiking
4hrs · 6mi · 984ft up · 984ft down

Starting at the beautiful Lake Strbske Pleso, you’ll hike through the incredibly scenic Mengusovska Valley - a lost world of jagged peaks, dramatic rock faces, and lush forest, ending at the shimmering Lake Popradske. Then, after four days of adventure and relaxation, it’s time to head home refreshed and revitalized.

Logistics

Starts

Krakow John Paul II International Airport, Poland

Arrive by 16:30 on Day 1

Ends

Krakow John Paul II International Airport, Poland

16:00 on Day 4

Transfers

Your host will pick you up at Krakow Airport in Poland at 4:30 PM on Day 1. You'll arrive back at Krakow Airport around 4:00 PM on Day 4, so if departing that evening, book any flight that leaves on or after 5:55 PM.

Travel options

There are regular flights to Kraków from major airports across the UK and Europe.

Your group arrival and departure transfers are long (150km, approximately 3 hours) and include a border crossing. For this reason, private transfers are not usually offered by your host as the cost is prohibitive and you are encouraged to join the group arrival and departure transfers.

As the first and last day of your adventure are full days and the traffic between Kraków Airport and the city is usually heavy, it is not possible to be picked up or dropped off at a city hotel. However, public transport between the city and the airport is good. There is a train that leaves once or twice per hour, this takes 17 minutes and is very economical.

Alternatively, there are a small number of flights between the UK and Poprad-Tatry Airport. Private transfers between this airport and your starting/finishing point are not available via your host, however, the cost of a taxi is approximately €15-25 one way.

What is the food like?

For breakfast, expect a continental buffet with a little bit of everything. For lunch, you will stop in mountain huts and small hotels. Expect meals of sauerkraut, tomato, bean or lentil soups, schnitzels or goulash. One of the soups is always vegetarian, however, a vegan diet is difficult to cater to, so we recommend you bring a packed lunch or ingredients from a local shop, just in case. For dinner, expect a 3-course meal of soup, a main meal and dessert.

What is the accommodation like?

High Tatras Mountains

You'll be staying in either Penzion Lomnicky or Vila Linda, both friendly, family-run hotels in the village of Stara Lesna. They are beautifully presented with a modern twist on traditional Slovakian style. All rooms are en suite and come with WiFi, towels, and a hairdryer.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking (this is subject to availability).

On any winter hike in a high mountain environment, you will potentially encounter high winds, rain, snow, ice and steep slopes. The Tatras Mountains are no different and you should be prepared to face these conditions. Temperatures can get as low as -4°F so multiple warm layers are necessary.

Don't miss -Winter edition was very special!

I tried to get on the Summer edition last year but it was very popular -I took a chance on the Winter version and it was really awesome: stunning landscapes, varied terrain, great hotel/food, awesome group and Jan our guide was very cool and hospitable.

It wasn't overly strenuous (if you are decently fit) and the Winter landscape makes it super-special. I even got to fit a bit of Ski day in!

We had an amazing few days with stunning scenery and great company. We were so lucky with the weather, blue skies and sunshine and even a chance to see the northern lights! The snowy High Tatras mountains were beautiful. The hikes were all varied enough to show different aspects of the mountains each day and definitely manageable with a reasonable level of fitness from walking, keeping active at home. The accommodation was cosy and comfortable with friendly staff and good food. Tom was an amazing guide, friendly, knowledgeable and ensuring we were well looked after and happy throughout the trip. This was my first time booking with MBA and it exceeded all my expectations. I highly recommend this trip for a chance to get out and hike amongst beautiful mountains in the winter alongside a group of great likeminded people that love the outdoors.

A little underwhelming

I enjoyed the trip, however I was a little disappointed with how easy the hiking was. If you do any amount of semi regular hiking then this is probably not the trip for you, I didn’t find it to be any challenge whatsoever and the pace was frustratingly slow. For a trip rated as moderately difficult I was expecting more. Also, the jacuzzi in the hotel was out of order so that was disappointing not to be able to use that. Having said that, Slovakia is extremely beautiful and I still enjoyed the trip, and I would still recommend it to anyone looking for a a trip on the slightly easier side.

Breathtaking mountains, frozen lakes, warm people, and that great feeling f knowing you have earned your dinner.

What makes this trip work is the guides. They know the area so well, they can create an adventure on the go, that will get you the best from whatever the unpredictable mountain weather throws at them.

We spent two days hiking through slow with glorious sunshine and Alpine views, and a third day hacking up wet ice inside a raincloud. Day three was still magical, as we saw the moodier side of the mountains - dark shadows looming out of the mist as we climbed frozen waterfalls and explored the forest.

The highlight for me? Eating hot goulash and proper Hungarian dumplings by a frozen lake 8km up the ice. They really are geared up for hikers here!

Fantastic trip to Slovakia High Tatras mountains. Jan the guide was brilliant, funny and so organised to get the best from the trip for us. The group was just lovely, the weather and views great and lovely food and wine. Felt lucky to have booked onto this trip.

The hotel we stayed was comfortable and friendly. Comfortable place to rest after some fun walks in the crampons (recommend wearing 2x pairs of socks if you have softer walking boots to avoid blisters) The opportunities to soak in the thermal one night was fun and also enjoyed the hotel sauna too.

Another MBA trip completed and continues to deliver on fantastatic short trips away - add this one to your list!

Had a really amazing time with Tom in slovakia hiking the high tatras. He was really knowledgeable and took things at a good pace so the group stuck together. The hotel was very comfortable and the food great plus they were super accommodating of food allergies so we all ate really well.

Would highly recommend and will be going back to Slovakia again

This one is pretty chilled with one long but simple hiking day and 2 shorter hiking days. The scenery is spectacular, guide (Tom) friendly, professional & knowledgable, comfortable bus and very smooth logistics. Great hotel with good food. Very enjoyable and a great starter if not sure about big hikes. Always a great bunch of people on MBA trips. Appreciate everyone waiting at the airport for me when flight delayed too. I also liked how the guide adjusted the itinerary to optimise good weather windows.

Wonderful - will be buzzing for weeks

Had a brilliant time on this short but jam packed trip. The hotel, pools and food were all great. Massive thanks to our guide Jan who was really knowledgeable and fun to spend time with. The group were lovely in every way. The walks were beautiful, nothing too difficult or steep, we walked in gorgeous pine forests, past a waterfall, and even on a frozen lake. Highlight for me was getting a glass of gluhwein in the oldest hut in the high tatras! we had sunny weather and lovely views on the first two days, but even enjoyed walking in the rain on our last morning, which made the forest beautifully atmospheric. This was my second Much Better Adventures trip and I’m already choosing my third…

This is a really wonderful weekend. The winter mountains were beautiful and the trails really good. The steam and thermal were such a nice treat after hiking in the cold. And our guide Tom was so good, giving us so much information about the area.

Excellent trip!
Excellent trip!

This trip was very well organised, with a whats app group for all the members set up beforehand so share important information. Tom was a fantastic guide, taking into account the different ability levels in the group. He changed the hikes on day 1 and day 2 around, which meant we were not doing the big day in the rain. He was fantastic at accommodating my gluten free diet. You can also borrow walking poles for free which I found very helpful. We had rain, snowstorm and sunshine over the three days so everything I packed got used! I found ski goggles very helpful in the snowstorm. We gelled really well as a group, and most of us had booked as a solo traveller, so that was really nice. No worries there! This trip won't disappoint. The food was excellent and the company fantastic.

What a wonderful way to spend a weekend away. The high Tatras mountains - majestic, scenic and unforgiving if you disrespect in any way.

This was my first time with MBA, and a first for trekking a mountain range like this. Still plenty of snow on our trip, despite the hot days, and walking the flat ground was a delight to be able to take it all in.

I personally found the steep sections very very hard, (my gp back here in UK confirmed i had the start of a chest infection sadly while i was there) but an alternate day was sorted for me so that I could still enjoy my time and discover things I had never done before. I can honestly say, the group I was with were fantastic and beautiful people, lots of experience and knowledge, and supportive - i will forever be grateful for their kindness and patience with this "virgin" trekker. Andy our guide. . . what a wonderful and knowledgeable soul. . . . he really was the best company on this trek and made the trip a lot of fun. The hotel , the staff and the food were superb, lovely room with a view, and the facilities top notch. Definitely take advantage of the sauna room. Slovakia did not dissappoint , and save to say I would love to return one day and trek it again. If you're on the fence about booking, just do it. . . make sure you are used to climbing and descending steep "hills" tho and if its bright and sunny, you won't need as many thermal clothing items. . . just a few lightweight layers.

Per person

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 122kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Absolutely. You can leave anything you don't need in your hotel room throughout the trip and just hike with a small backpack for personal items each day.

The local tap water is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottles (at least 1.5L) to fill up to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.

This trip includes locations or elevations where conditions can be extremely cold. Daytime temperatures may drop below freezing (32°F/0°C), and nights are often significantly colder. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of exposure-related issues, such as frostbite or hypothermia.

Your guide is trained to manage these risks, adapting activity intensity and monitoring group well-being. However, it's important to take personal responsibility – bringing the right cold-weather gear (see Packing List), staying hydrated and well-nourished, and recognizing early signs of cold stress.

We recommend assessing your personal comfort and resilience in cold environments, and consulting a medical professional if you have health conditions that may be affected. Arriving early can also help you acclimatize to the colder conditions, especially if you're coming from a much warmer climate.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).

If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.

For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.
