Trek through the mesmerizing High Tatras in winter - 48 miles of untouched mountains with matching views
Traverse untracked powder and lush pine forests in Slovakia’s remote backcountry over a long weekend
Soak your aches away in the revitalizing, steamy waters of one of the region's natural thermal springs
Key Information
Day 1
The High Tatras

Travel into the High Tatras Mountains that separate Slovakia and Poland and head for the charming mountain village of Stara Lesna, where you’ll receive a warm welcome at the friendly, family-run hotel you’ll be staying in. After settling into your room, head down to meet your traveling companions over dinner and relax into the vacation rhythm.
Day 2
Hike to the Green Lake

Hiking
Climb to the remote, vivid turquoise waters of the aptly named Green Lake, 5070 feet above sea level - a particularly magical location in winter. After exploring the shoreline and grabbing some hard to believe photos, relax in a landscape of snow-capped peaks, wildflower meadows, and rolling green pine forest. As this trip strikes that all-important balance between adventure and relaxation, balance out your day with some serious sauna and jacuzzi time back in the village.
Day 3
Winter hiking to Velicke Lake

Hiking
Today you'll be hiking into the winter wonderland that is the High Tatras Mountains. Relaxation earned, soak in a natural thermal pool and let your worries (and muscle knots) fade away.
Day 4
A final hike before heading home

Hiking
Starting at the beautiful Lake Strbske Pleso, you’ll hike through the incredibly scenic Mengusovska Valley - a lost world of jagged peaks, dramatic rock faces, and lush forest, ending at the shimmering Lake Popradske. Then, after four days of adventure and relaxation, it’s time to head home refreshed and revitalized.

Starts
Krakow John Paul II International Airport, Poland
Arrive by 16:30 on Day 1
Ends
Krakow John Paul II International Airport, Poland
16:00 on Day 4
Transfers
Your host will pick you up at Krakow Airport in Poland at 4:30 PM on Day 1. You'll arrive back at Krakow Airport around 4:00 PM on Day 4, so if departing that evening, book any flight that leaves on or after 5:55 PM.
Travel options
There are regular flights to Kraków from major airports across the UK and Europe.
Your group arrival and departure transfers are long (150km, approximately 3 hours) and include a border crossing. For this reason, private transfers are not usually offered by your host as the cost is prohibitive and you are encouraged to join the group arrival and departure transfers.
As the first and last day of your adventure are full days and the traffic between Kraków Airport and the city is usually heavy, it is not possible to be picked up or dropped off at a city hotel. However, public transport between the city and the airport is good. There is a train that leaves once or twice per hour, this takes 17 minutes and is very economical.
Alternatively, there are a small number of flights between the UK and Poprad-Tatry Airport. Private transfers between this airport and your starting/finishing point are not available via your host, however, the cost of a taxi is approximately €15-25 one way.

What is the food like?
For breakfast, expect a continental buffet with a little bit of everything. For lunch, you will stop in mountain huts and small hotels. Expect meals of sauerkraut, tomato, bean or lentil soups, schnitzels or goulash. One of the soups is always vegetarian, however, a vegan diet is difficult to cater to, so we recommend you bring a packed lunch or ingredients from a local shop, just in case. For dinner, expect a 3-course meal of soup, a main meal and dessert.
What is the accommodation like?
High Tatras Mountains
You'll be staying in either Penzion Lomnicky or Vila Linda, both friendly, family-run hotels in the village of Stara Lesna. They are beautifully presented with a modern twist on traditional Slovakian style. All rooms are en suite and come with WiFi, towels, and a hairdryer.
Upgrades
For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking (this is subject to availability).
On any winter hike in a high mountain environment, you will potentially encounter high winds, rain, snow, ice and steep slopes. The Tatras Mountains are no different and you should be prepared to face these conditions. Temperatures can get as low as -4°F so multiple warm layers are necessary.
Amazing Trip!!
Where do I begin. . . . what a fantastic holiday in the most gorgeous of surroundings. The entire trip was brilliantly organised from start to finish with our wonderful guide, Patrik. He was a most excellent host, not only taking us on the walks but giving information about the places and interesting facts. Such a chilled out, relaxed guy who looked after us so well. Our group were such fun and a great laugh.
The accomodation was really nice, a family run hotel. The food was superb!! We all looked forward to our breakfasts and dinners.
As for the High Tatras mountains themselves, simply breathtaking. The snowy peaks, frozen lakes, wintry forests and cosy mountain huts for lunch breaks. I didn't want to go home!!
Highly recommend to anyone to book a trip through MBA. I will be again!!

A beautiful destination, and a
A beautiful destination, and a wonderful long weekend with a perfect mix of hiking and relaxing. Thank you to Patrik, who was an excellent guide!

Thoroughly recommend this trip!
Lovely three day break to the Tatras mountain range with a great group. Idyllic winter scenery with just the right amount of challenge on the hikes. Our guide Miro was superb at keeping everything running smoothly and enjoyable for all.

Brilliant trip
A brilliant trip to the Tatras mountains which were very beautiful. Fitted a lot into the 3 days. . . 3 decent days hikes in different areas, a visit to thermal baths and a viewing of some ice sculptures. 8 of us on the trip which was a great group size. Lucky to have Patrik as our guide who was brilliant. . . knew his stuff with a passion for the area, and also friendly and fun. Fully recommended!
Very good overall. Excellent guide
Very good overall. Excellent guide who looked after us extremely well. Level rating for winter might need reviewing. Accommodation very comfortable just a bit isolated with nothing to see or do after an early supper.
Excellent trip
Stunning scenery, three hikes all offering something a bit different and the right level of slightly challenging but doable. Everything super well organised and the group and our guide Miro were great! Highly recommend

Spectacular
Three different hikes all with their own challenges and charm, stunning views, lovely accommodation and Tom our guide was brilliant.

Great guide. . . Mr Tom
Our guide Tom kept the hikes fun and informative. Well organised trip with great food. Have come back refreshed. . with slightly sore legs!
Well organised and great fun!

Fantastic Trip
This was our first time with MBA. Soooo impressed from the initial contact all the way through to the final drop off at the airport. Hotel was good and clean. The guide was so knowledgeable and friendly. Everything worked really well. Loved the WhatsApp group he set up - we could all swap photos. The kit list was ideal, as we didn't have any idea on how much to take.

Incredible Adventure
Hiking Slovakia’s High Tatras was a really memorable experience from start to finish. Everything was well organised and easy, which made it simple to just enjoy the trip. Our guide, Jan, was fantastic- knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about the mountains. He created a great atmosphere and made everyone feel comfortable throughout.
We had an awesome group, which added a lot to the experience. There was a great mix of people and a really nice energy the whole time.
The food was also excellent. I’m vegan, and it was absolutely no problem — there were always good options and everything was fresh and satisfying.
The scenery was the real highlight. The High Tatras in winter are a proper snowy wonderland, with stunning views and beautiful trails every day.
A brilliant trip overall -amazing mountains, great hiking, and a really enjoyable experience all round. Would definitely recommend.

Excellent snowy Slovakian walking adventure
Another brilliant trip with MBA. We’re so glad we booked this one at the last minute. As always with MBA it was well organised with our excellent guide Peter who was a Mountain Leader and rescuer! He ensured we made the most of the weather (and we had everything from snow to sun) by organising our walks accordingly. The hikes were a good mix of difficulty even if a few of us didn’t like using the crampons that much.
We stopped in some excellent places in the mountains for lunch and hot chocolates. The thermal spa was a real treat and the hotel was good quality - comfy rooms with lovely home cooked food in the evenings. We had a super group of 8 who helped make it a fun trip. Would highly recommend. Think the summer edition would also be beautiful and Peter also recommended the Slovakian Paradise trip which we might check out for another year too.
Bring lots of layers as you get warm walking up hill but it can be cold in the snow. Waterproof hiking boots are essential. We didn’t use our gators but you’d need them if it was rainy / very snowy.

An amazing place with a great guide
This was an amazing trip, which I would recommend without hesitation. The was my 3rd MBA adventure, and they just keep getting better. The guiding by Andy (Andrej) was first class. Andy is passionate about the Tatra Mountains and it felt like he had taken us into his world for a few days. He organised the Airport collections, did the driving, and put much so thought into the food and drink for us all over the three days. The mountain huts he took us to were brilliant (one was a 4 Star Hotel). We were really well looked after by Andy and he was great company – both during the day and in the evenings, playing card games. We got lots of insight into the mountains and explanations on what we were seeing.
The views were amazing – obviously weather dependent – but even on the less sunny days there are woods, rivers and waterfalls to see and take in – and hot wine or Tatra Tea at a hut. On our trip we had a day of brilliant sunshine, a day of lower cloud and some snow – but still great views, and a day of lots of snow. The variety actually added to the adventure – each day was different. The terrain is mixed, but certainly not difficult or particularly steep, no one had any difficulties. Walking in spikes gave excellent grip. Andy set a good pace and allowed the group to go at a pace that suited them – we were never rushed.
We did so much each day – and rounding off two of the days at the Hotel Spa and the local thermal baths with a drink was a real treat.
The accommodation was excellent, very comfortable and warm with great food.
An unforgettable three days in the snowy, and sometimes sunny, mountains. Fourth MBA trip is already booked!

Book it, book it now!!!
Hands down one of my favourite trips. Beautiful scenery, good food, a truly top-tier guide (thank you Tom!), and the loveliest group of like-minded people to share it with. Absolutely magic.
Two tips from me:
Must try - mountain sweet dish parena buchta
And if you are worried about the cold then it's not bad at all! I suffer with raynauds and am ALWAYS cold at home in England. Even in -13 I was taking off layers. It's a very different dry sort of cold. I did take disposable handwarmers though which were a God send at times!

High Praise for High Tatras
Would recommend this incredible trip to everyone I know. Slovakia is stunning and the variety of walks and views makes this adventure different everyday. From mountain tops to forest to waterfalls and mountain huts and even sledding. This trip was everything I could have imagined and more. Tom, our guide was fun, knowledgeable and professional- top marks for a trip I would do again in an instant.
Dreamy weekend away
Couldn’t recommend this trip more. It was my first experience of group travel and it really made the trip. Our guide Peter was amazing also!
Highly recommend this trip!
Stunning landscapes, cosy mountain huts and beautiful snowy walks. Day 1 was approx 4hrs walking with breaks and Day 2 was a little longer but limited elevation for both. Seamlessly organised and so relaxing - I can't believe how much we did in a 4 day trip. Crampons and poles were provided. All we had to bring was good energy. The thermal baths were a perfect end to the trip. The guesthouse was really cosy plus great food & a lovely sauna area.
Weekend in a winter wonderland
Very well organised trip packed with activities. We spent only long weekend but have seen and experienced a lot. A special thank you to Andrej - our guide. You were great!
Stunning scenery great company and guide
Amazing few days. Sun and snow. Stunning scenery with dramatic mountains, snow waterfalls and streams. Great company. Excellent informative local guide with obvious passion for the mountains (Andrej). Fantastic trip highly recommended.
The best weekend
Honestly one of the best weekends ever!! Incredible scenery, brilliant group, and a fantastic guide! Andrej was awesome. Really love Slovakia.
A great little trip!
I really enjoyed this trip. The 3 hikes we did were all great and I loved how there was always something to eat and drink at the top. The scenery was superb, especially when we had some sun and it wasn't cold. Walking up hill for a few minutes quickly gets you warm. The food at the hotel was super and our guide, Andi, was fantastic. I highly recommend giving this trip a go if you like winter hiking that isn't too hard. Also having a couple of days in Krakow too is good to add on.
A great little trip
The mountains were beautiful, great to walk in the crunchy snow with amazing scenery all around. The three different walks were varied and sufficiently challenging without being too difficult.
Peter was an excellent guide and we felt very safe in his hands. Everything was well organised and ran smoothly. Would definitely recommend for those looking for a little burst of mountain air.
Amazing trip!!!
I loved every minute of this trip; from pick-up to drop-off, everything was so well-organised. The hotel we stayed at was lovely, with great spa facilities and delicious meals. The hikes were challenging at points, but pretty easy-going for the most part- a nice mix. The scenery was stunning, the snow was gorgeous, and the huts we stopped at for lunch were cosy and had excellent food. The thermal baths were super relaxing, and exactly what was needed. The group dynamic was perfect.
Big shoutout to our guide Patrik- he really made the trip. He was super knowledgeable about the Tatras- from the wildlife, to the weather, the routes, and the history- I feel like I learned alot. He was well-organised and clear about what we would be doing each day, friendly, funny, and super helpful when it came to handling dietary requirements. Really couldn't have asked for a better guide.
Overall- an amazing trip with amazing people. If you're thinking about going on it, I can't recommend it enough!
Loved every minute!
Absolutely fantastic experience, would highly recommend. So well organised with great communication from MBA from the offset. Hotel facilities were better than expected and the food was amazing. Great group of people on the trip, like-minded people with similar values made for an even better experience. The hikes were manageable with outstanding views and loved the mountain hut stop-offs. Really felt like we were treated to a full introduction to the best of Slovakia's Tatras. Our guide, Patrik, was an absolute star. So friendly, helpful and informative about each day's itinerary. Great to chat to and share cool details about the areas we were walking in - big shout out to him! Felt safe, welcome and at ease.
This tour exceeded my expectations
This tour exceeded my expectations in every way! This was my 4th trip with MBA, and probably the best value trip. The hotel and food was great. Our guide Patrick very knowledgeable, and created a great group dynamic with a good sense of humour. Having grown up in a mountain region, the scenery was more beautiful than expected in wintery conditions. The thermal baths were a great way to relax after a hike through the snow! I'd highly recommend this trip to anyone.
Fantastic tour
I had such a good time on this tour. The routes were good (and a good workout!) and the scenery was stunning. I also enjoyed the other activities, especially the thermal baths. The hotel was clean and comfortable and the meals were delicious. Our tour guide Patrik was outstanding - friendly, knowledgeable and patient. You should come on this trip if you want something a bit different in the winter - you won’t regret it!

Amazing trip!
Absolutely superb trip. Our guide Patrick went out of his to make everything perfect from start to finish. He planned our walks based on where would have the best weather and didn’t disappoint. The scenery was beautiful and the walks were challenging but doable. Felt there was a good mix of outdoors hiking and relaxation. Really enjoyed the thermal baths and felt like we’d been immersed in Slovak culture, avoiding the usual tourist traps. Loved every minute and would definitely do it again.
A wonderful trip with stunning
A wonderful trip with stunning scenery, enjoyable routes, and great food and accommodation. Patrik was a fantastic guide -easygoing, approachable, attentive - who made everything run smoothly and created a memorable experience.

A brilliant first solo trip
I booked this trip a full year in advance so by the time it arrived it had a lot to live up to! ;) It was my first time travelling solo for a holiday and I was drawn to this trip for the itinerary and the destination but also the fact it would be a small group. The run-up to the trip was great - all the necessary information was provided in good time and I was able to get all the gear I needed easily. I met the group at Krakow airport as planned, and our guide, Jan, gave us a warm welcome. Jan was a great guide - he was fun, good-humoured, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and kind. His local knowledge was excellent and he offered an alternative it itinerary for day 3 due to the weather conditions, which was a great back-up plan as it included seeing a grand ice sculpture depicting a cathedral in Rome that was just breathtaking. And I loved hearing the stories of the mountain sherpas and drinking mulled wine at Rainerova.
The mountains are stunning, whether there are clear skies or low cloud. Some of the cloud inversions were beautiful.
The hotel was small and family-run. The food was plentiful and freshly prepared, and service was excellent. Rooms were simply but adequately furnished.
I had a really good time and have come away with some new friendships, which is a delightful bonus. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this trip to others.
It was perfect on all
It was perfect on all levels. The hikes were varied and so very beautiful. The thermal bath was the cherry on the cake, the hotel was very cozy and comfortable and the meals hearty and prepared with love. I cannot recommend our guide Patrik Zilka enough. He made everything run incredibly smoothly, was very conscientious and truly cared about our wellbeing and experience. This long weekend in the fresh air und unspoilt nature has rejuvenated all my senses. Thank you all for a wonderful experience that I will treasure forever.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 122kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
Absolutely. You can leave anything you don't need in your hotel room throughout the trip and just hike with a small backpack for personal items each day.
The local tap water is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottles (at least 1.5L) to fill up to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.
This trip includes locations or elevations where conditions can be extremely cold. Daytime temperatures may drop below freezing (32°F/0°C), and nights are often significantly colder. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of exposure-related issues, such as frostbite or hypothermia.
Your guide is trained to manage these risks, adapting activity intensity and monitoring group well-being. However, it's important to take personal responsibility – bringing the right cold-weather gear (see Packing List), staying hydrated and well-nourished, and recognizing early signs of cold stress.
We recommend assessing your personal comfort and resilience in cold environments, and consulting a medical professional if you have health conditions that may be affected. Arriving early can also help you acclimatize to the colder conditions, especially if you're coming from a much warmer climate.
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
