Enjoy awesome views of Mount Toubkal - the highest peak in North Africa

Key Information

Day 1

Explore the sights and sounds of Marrakech

Your host will meet you at the airport and take you to your traditional riad accommodation in Marrakech’s historic medina. You'll then get the chance to spend the day exploring the city’s colourful souks, wander the UNESCO-listed main square and indulge in some amazing Moroccan food.

Day 2

Imi Oughlad to Tiziane

Hiking

5hrs · 12km · 650m up · 350m down

Meet your fellow adventurers and drive to the trailhead in Imi Oughlad where you’ll meet your local support team. Hike along a dirt track and into the Moroccan countryside alongside your mule train. Enjoy a picnic lunch at 2000m and after a rest in the shade, continue to the picturesque, red clay village of Tiziane (1750m) where you’ll indulge in a delicious Moroccan dinner in a local gite.

Day 3

Springs and forests

Hiking

5hrs · 15km · 600m up · 700m down

Hike through walnut and cherry groves to the refreshing Assaka spring where you’ll relax over a picnic lunch. In the afternoon, gently descend along the forest edge to the traditional Berber village of D’knt or nearby Agouns n Assol (1870m) and enjoy a hot meal in another working Berber home.

Day 4

Berber life

Hiking

6-7hrs · 17km · 830m up · 850m down

Hike to a freshwater spring, passing shepherds and goatherds tending their flocks and Berber women and children carrying firewood and herbs on their backs in the traditional way. You'll hike to almost 2700m, which will be the highest point of this trek. Continue through an amazing landscape of steep, stacked agricultural terraces to the scenic village of Tamsoult (1850m) for another night in a traditional home.

Day 5

Back to Marrakech

Hiking

4-5hrs · 13km · 640m up · 650m down

Start the day with a scenic hike to a nearby waterfall and then continue up and over the Tizi n Mzik pass at 2,489m. Enjoy the view and then descend through a shady valley of juniper and pine to the town of Imlil. Eat lunch while you stare at majestic Mount Toubkal – the highest peak in North Africa – then say farewell to your guide and support team and head back to Marrakech in time for onward travel or some more time in this beautiful country.

Day 6

What is the food like?

Meals on this trek will be fresh, healthy and distinctly Moroccan and are prepared by your Berber cook. For breakfast, expect bread and jam, cookies, fruit, juice, coffee and milk. For lunch, expect salad, tomatoes, carrots, lentils or beans, rice or pasta, sardines or tuna, and fruit. For dinner meanwhile, expect soup, tagine, couscous, olives, nuts and fruit. Most dietary requirements can be catered for, just let your host know in advance.

Vegetarians, vegans and other dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for - please just request on your passenger info form

What is the accommodation like?

Marrakech

In Marrakech, you'll stay in a beautiful riad - traditional Moroccan houses with an interior garden or courtyard. The exact riad you stay in will be confirmed nearer the time based on availability and group size. All are chosen for their excellent reputation, location, beautiful decor and welcoming service.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked for an extra charge (only for the Marrakech nights), see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking (this is subject to availability).

The Atlas Mountains

You'll stay in local Berber homes known as a Gite d'Etape or just gite. Translating roughly as 'staging post,' these gites are home to Berber families who will be your hosts. Facilities are basic, but there's no better way to see the real Morocco.

Upgrades

Because of the style of accommodation, private upgrades are not available on this trip.

This trip has been rated as Moderate

You'll be following established trails but the elevation and long days can be tiring, so a moderate level of fitness and stamina is needed: you'll be hiking for 4-7 hours a day. Day 4 is graded as more of a challenge – there will be a few hundred metres of additional ascent and descent on this day compared to the other hiking days, to reach almost 2700m (the highest elevation on this trip).

What will I need to carry?

Mules will carry your main overnight luggage during the trek and you will need to carry your daypack with your daytime essentials (extra layer, snacks, water etc.). For the welfare of the mules, please ensure your main overnight luggage is in a soft-sided bag and weighs no more than 15kg.

From April to October, daytime temperatures in the valleys are typically warm (25-30°C) but cool off considerably at night, and the higher you go, the cooler it gets. In the winter, daytime temperatures are still warm (10-20°C), but nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing. Afternoon storms are always possible in the Atlas Mountains during the summer months, but typically the winter months are wetter.

It rains a little in the valleys and snows on the peaks for a few days a month in the winter. Still, the amounts are small and generally, they don’t prevent anyone from enjoying the trek. The valleys are still warm and the snow on the high peaks makes the scenery that much more beautiful!

View detailed weather for the area here on Mountain Forecast.

In Marrakech, spring and autumn temperatures average 10-25°C, and it rains a small amount (roughly seven days each month). From June to September it gets quite hot in the city, averaging 15-35°C, and it only rains a few days each month. In the height of summer, daytime temperatures in Marrakech have been known to approach 45°C on occasion, so please ensure that you come prepared with sun protection, light and airy clothing and electrolytes/rehydration solutions if travelling at this time of year.

Fantastic trip to the Atlas mountains

This trip was fabulous from start to finish - it was so well organised and a brilliant way to see the Atlas mountains. The group were great, and we were so well looked after by our guides and extremely well catered for by the chefs! The food was amazing and varied, with plenty of mint tea! The walking was incredible, challenging in bits but very enjoyable. Quite a lot of ascent and descent over passes. Spectacular scenery, and accommodation in the mountains was basic but clean and comfortable (warm showers in each place!). The group were just brilliant, we got on very well and the dynamic really worked. First MBA trip and first group trip - would recommend this trip wholeheartedly. Thanks to MBA, Aztat Treks and the rest of the group for such a great time.

Brilliant trip!

I really enjoyed this trip. We were taken to beautiful, remote and quiet corners of the Atlas Mountains. We only saw other trekkers, not part of our group, on our last day. The guides were really lovely and encouraged a great atmosphere. We were very well looked after: the food throughout was very good. The gites were simple, but were made as comfortable as possible - all had a warm shower, a bed with a blanket and sometimes a heater in the main room to keep us warm. I was doing this trip in November. The group got on very well. I would highly recommend.

I had an amazing time on this trip. The scenery was breathtaking and our guides Hussain and Mohammed looked after us so well. The chefs also did a phenomenal job producing delicious hot food in the mountains. Everything was really well organised, I would throughly recommend this trip

Perfect trip from start to finish

Everything about this trip exceeded expectations. From booking, where the customer service team went above and beyond fixing a gift certificate issue I had and then fantastic regular communications to ensure I was well prepared for my trip and reassured that I had all the details. Pick-up from the airport was perfectly organized and the riad in Marrakech simple but very clean and welcoming with amazing breakfasts. For the hikes we were in excellent hands with Mustafa the guide in particular - he set the perfect pace for our group of 13 to be challenged but still enjoy the hikes and spectacular scenery. The Berber hospitality in the gites was second to none - they joyfully opened the spaces and shared their cuisine and culture so generously. I am of moderate fitness and found this trip well described as a moderate physical challenge. We were fuelled by the most delicious and abundant picnic lunches I have ever enjoyed - how the chefs manage to do that on top of mountains is a miracle! We went in the second half of November and enjoyed beautiful blue skies every day but it does get very cold at night (under 5C) and on the top of the mountain passes, but then very warm in the sun at the less high altitudes so pack various layers accordingly.

Wow - what a trip! We can’t thank enough MBA & our local guides Mustafa and Mohammed from Aztat Treks for this outstanding trip. We were fully informed of every detail at all times. We are suffering from post-holiday blues having got home and will be booking with MBA again. The trip provided not only stunning views of the beautiful Atlas Mountains but an insight into Berber life. The chefs were also brilliant ensuring we ate well in the middle of the mountains. Totally recommend.

I have trekked around the world and this was the first time I used Much Better Adventures, and it was an epic trip! First and foremost, the in the ground team at Aztat Treks were absolutely top-notch. From the moment I booked the trip through the last day the team on the ground provided incredible service. A shout out to our amazing guides Mustafa and Mohamed and the cook who prepared hot picnic meals in the middle of the Atlas Mountains, I was blown away. The warm hospitality of the Berber people was felt every moment of the trip and the hike through the Berber villages and mountains was breathtaking. I often felt like i had stepped back into time. It was truly an incredible trip and I am forever grateful for the team at Aztat Treks and MBA for providing such a unique experience. Will definitely book another trip soon and write about my experience as well. Thank you!!!

Everything I hoped for and more

This was a fantastic way to see the Atlas mountains and learn about the Berber people. The group was incredibly well looked after by the Aztat Treks team, from start to finish. Being treated to delicious cooked lunches in the midst of breathtaking mountain scenery was like nothing I've ever experienced before! Our guides were also very good at pacing the group to ensure that no one was left behind. Keeping the group together like this made for very sociable journeying which I think enhanced the experience. I highly recommend this trip!!

Well recommended trip, if you

Well recommended trip, if you want to get out to an unexplored part of Morocco, didn't see anyone, except locals for three days. The trip was described appropriately good basic food and accomodation, very appropriate, as we were still in the poshest house in one village! The guides were really knowledgeable , knew the mountains very well. The chefs were amazing, we could learn something from their picnics, they produced hot food in the mountains. The walking was at the right pace too, as none of us were affected by the altitude. I would highly recommend this trip

What a fantastic trip—I didn’t want it to end. We went hiking every day, which meant plenty of exercise, but everything was very manageable and enjoyable. We felt so lucky with the wonderful meals we received—breakfast, lunch, and dinner were all delicious, with the cooks preparing traditional Moroccan dishes for each meal. The food was exceptional. Our guides, Mustafa and Mohammed, added a lot of fun to the experience and shared fascinating insights into Berber life in the mountains. They helped make everyone in the group feel comfortable. I was initially unsure about joining a group trip, but when you bring together people with a shared interest, it just works. Finally, the people at the Riad, including Assia, were incredibly helpful and responsive to my questions before the trip. Thank you, Much Better Adventures, Aztat Treks, and all the teams involved, for an unforgettable experience!

This was an awesome trip !!!!

Very well organised from pick up at the airport to final lunch stop. Sitting down to eat with fellow travellers and being presented with local foods made by chef who travels with you was a treat. The views throughout the mountains were incredible. The guides Mustafa and Mohammed did a great job of looking after everyone. I would recommend Much Better Adventures to anyone.

Atlas trek above expectations!

The one reason I don't give five stars, is because there was not much opportunity to really be quietly present in de spectacular landscapes. The pace was rather high, and the terrain rough, so looking at the path and the stones was essential and it would have been great to have more pauses to be quietly overwhelmed.

This trip is a great getaway from busy life. We have been taken care of from start to finish to have a stress free experience. Everyone in the local crew was super friendly and helpful. Organization was spot on and everything went seemlesly.

Hikes were great with beautiful scenery, almost no other hikers/tourists, we really went off the beaten track and explored the less visited side of Atlas Mountains. Terrain was relatively easy, no tricky parts, altough there were a few steeper bits. Mostly gravel, dust, dirt track and rocks.

I was worried about the food before the trip, but ultimately it exceeded all my expectations. It was delicious, fresh with lot of variety, lot of vegetables and fruits as well as legumes, rice, pasta, delicous bread. And there was PLENTY, we never managed to finish everything, actualy i think we never went halfway through any of the portions. So if you are a big guy or someone who like eating a lot (like me) you going to have a great time! Also, if you are vegan you will be in heaven :) I didnt needed that many snacks, i ussualy jsut ate 1-2 bars in between breakfast and lunch and thats it. There were few tiny shops with very limited options in some of the villages, good to buy more snacks if you run out.

Our guides Hussain and Mustafa were amazing, very friendly with great english and eager to share all sorts of interesting stories and information about local culture, habits, even religion. They were also very good pacers and extremely organized!

Alfie F.(November 2025)
What are you waiting for?
What are you waiting for?

I cannot fault this expedition. Everything was well organised.

The Atlas Mountains were beautiful, and the hiking was hard but doable. However, what made the trip was getting out of Marrakesh and staying in smaller villages. Marrakesh feels tailored to tourists, but on the hike I felt like I saw more of what Morocco is really about. I also had some amazing food and met some amazing people.

I cannot recommend this enough. Just understand where you are going, you will not be staying in 5 star hotels. I would recommend extending your stay at Riad Viewpoint (also a great hotel) for a day to have a chance to explore Marrakesh.

Claire L.(November 2025)
Unforgettable Experience!

I recently completed the 5-day Atlas Mountains trek (4 days hiking, with time to explore Marrakesh at the start and end), and it was an incredible adventure from start to finish.

The terrain is mostly sandy with loose rocks – I did the hike in trail shoes/ trainers, which was fine, though gaiters were really handy to stop the loose bits getting in my shoes. Some people had poles which would be helpful for the downhill sections mainly. I’d recommend bringing your own snacks for the trail. The trip is rated as moderate, which feels accurate, though there are a few more challenging sections with steeper inclines. Thankfully, our early starts meant we avoided the hottest part of the day – and early November was a perfect time to go.

Our guides, Hussain and Mustafa, were absolute stars – they kept the group together, shared amazing local knowledge, and somehow managed to provide the best trail mix and meals I’ve ever had on a trek! Breakfasts, picnic lunches, and dinners were all delicious and full of variety.

We barely saw another soul during the four days in the mountains, which made it feel really special and remote. The scenery was out of this world – vast, peaceful, and ever-changing. Accommodation was very basic, but our group’s energy and the guides’ experience made it a truly memorable trip.

If you’re hesitating, book it. You won’t regret it. Huge thanks to Hussain and Mustafa for an unforgettable few days – you’re awesome!

Great group, guides, food and organization. I was initially concerned that 5 days was too short, but it was a fantastic tour of the Atlas Mountains and the group had great chemistry. Sleeping arrangement ls were tight and very basic, but it added to the camaraderie. This was my first MBA adventure and I plan to try another.

Wow! What a fantastic trip! I booked this with a friend and we had so much fun. The scenery is stunning and the hikes were challenging in parts but very enjoyable. The guides, Hussain and Mustafa, were great fun and very knowledgable. They paced the group well and were always on hand for questions and jokes. The food was fantastic and although the accommodation is basic, everything was clean and perfectly fine for nights between hikes. I would highly recommend this trip.

Just returned from the most amazing trip in The Atlas Mountains. It was a challenge for me but what an experience. I will always have the most treasured memories of the whole trip and the fabulous people I shared it with. All the staff were so friendly , helpful and great fun. In particular I would love to say a huge Thank you to Hussein and Mustafa our daily guides who made each day fun. They were so aware of each persons needs and always full of energy and enthusiasm . They were so encouraging and involving us in local culture.

Amazing first experience

We had an amazing experience on our first trek in the Atlas Mountains. The group was very welcoming, including both experienced trekkers and those new to hiking. The trek is classified as "moderate," but some participants may find certain sections challenging. The food prepared for us was excellent, and the guides were incredibly supportive and helpful throughout the journey. The overnight accommodations were basic, featuring either beds or mattresses on the floor, don't expect luxury in the bathrooms either. However, they were functional for the few nights we stayed. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and I would highly recommend it!

Overall a fantastic experience and well organised. The food was delicious and there was a reasonable selection considering facilities were basic and lunch was prepared outdoors. The guides were really helpful. Everyone on the trek was friendly and accommodating.

Brilliant trekking through some fabulous

Brilliant trekking through some fabulous scenery in the company of interesting strangers who quickly became good friends. The organisation was slick from the airport transfers to the arrangements on the trek, allowing us to focus on the hike and the stunning views. Already thinking about our next MBA trip.

Wonderful Trip & Such Good Value

I chose this trip as I wanted to visit Marrakech but wanted more than a busy city break. I came with my partner. We both have a moderate level of fitness & found trio doable with challenging parts.

Being able to pay for trip in instalments was really helpful.

Excellent communication prior to trip including when it got close-by a group Whats App you could join or not.

We needed a room for 2 more nights which was arranged for us at the lovely View Point Riad, nice quiet location, fab breakfast , lovely decor & helpful staff.

Airport pick up & drop off took any stress away.

The walk itself was with Saeed & Mohammed (apologies if I have spelled names wrong) , they were 2 very friendly & helpful guides , totally understood the group , new who needed extra help & when to push in etc. It was a pleasure to meet them both.

Every meal was delicious, huge salads served up in the mountains. Absolute feasts every meal time.

The gites were basic with hard beds to sleep on but that’s also more normal otherwise they had all we needed including hot showers & on our last night live music.

Walk was Sunday AM to Wednesday PM , got to Marrakech about 6pm, we then stayed until Saturday, I didn’t book some elements so if you want to go to YSL Gardens for example do book ahead.

We had a fab time getting lost in the souks & felt very safe.

We had a great time & thoroughly recommend the company & all people involved.

Atlas Trek - first time with Much Better Adventures

Absolutely blown away by this experience. The high Atlas Mountains are so beautiful in October and this is a great way to experience them. Knowledgeable and friendly guides and a fun and interesting group (of 14), staying with local people in their gites in the most remote locations. We’ll definitely be back for more of these trips. Healthy fresh food prepared daily was well above our expectations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Absolutely! We recognise that you may want to leave some of the kit you bring to Morocco somewhere safe before you start your trek. When you reach Imlil, you will be able to leave any non-essential items you don’t want to take with you at your local guide's base there.

Your host works with muleteers who collaborate with local charity, Spana, (The Society for the Protection of Animals and Nature) on the AMI program (Aid to the Mules of Imlil). The charity provides training, guidance and incentives to mule owners to encourage and support good care for their animals in all aspects of their working lives. The program also provides a monthly clinic which offers free veterinary care to the animals and the distribution of humane tack.

Ramadan is expected to take place from 17th February to 19th March 2026. The national holiday of Eid ul-Fitr will follow for 2-3 days. Ramadan is an Islamic festival where the religious do not eat or drink during daylight hours. While this is a really interesting time to travel, especially to witness celebrations where the fast is broken in the evenings, you can expect some business hours will be shortened, alcohol is not permitted during daylight hours and some restaurants will be closed during this festival period. Activities for local people tend to be limited during the day and the nights are very active in cities with lots of different foods being sold and consumed. Ramadan will not affect the inclusions on your trip, although you should be aware that dinners will be served after locals break their fast in the evenings.

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme highs, where limited shade and high humidity can also be a factor. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but hydration, proper clothing, and sun protection are essential.

Before travelling, consider your ability to be active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have concerns – especially if you have any cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two prior to the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.
