Meet your host at Köping station and head to a secret location, deep in the pine forests of central Sweden. Explore your boreal wonderland and stretch your legs with a short hike to get to know the inhabitants of the Taiga ecosystem, hearing about the importance of forest biodiversity and a healthy ecosystem. You’ll forage for berries and mushrooms on the forest floor, and learn how to use these wild ingredients to cook delicious food. During your downtime throughout this adventure, there'll also be opportunities to learn bushcraft skills, such as wood-carving. Enjoy dinner around the campfire and a chat with your guide before hitting the hay for a night under the stars.

Wake up to a spot of forest yoga before breakfast (for those who are keen, it's not compulsory!), and stretch out after your night of camping. Today is all about the grey wolves that roam freely through the forest: learn all about their behaviour, their history, and the important role they play in rewilding as a keystone species. You’ll also learn about the Scandinavian Wolf Project, and the conservation efforts currently in place to protect the wolves. Later, you’ll head out to an area where a family of wolves keep their territory to search for paw prints, killed prey and droppings. As dusk falls and the forest comes alive, you'll set out on a torchlight hike, listening out for the unmistakable howls.

After honing your outdoor skills, you’ll head deeper into the wilds on a mission to meet the ‘king of the forest’ – the magnificent, and massive, moose. Learn how to track them by looking out for bite marks, hoof prints and fresh droppings. In the afternoon, you’ll escape to a secluded lake for a wild swim and to enjoy an age-old Scandinavian tradition, a wood-fired sauna. Then it’s back to camp to make a fire and cook some dinner – eyes peeled for roe deer, mountain hares, wolves and even lynx, along the way.

Wild Camping

Stay

Wild Camping

You will spend three nights wild camping deep in the forest in a twin or single tent. The exact location is kept a secret – your guide will explain why. Each tent is equipped with an inflatable mat, sheets, pillow, pillow cover and sleeping bag. A long-drop toilet is available near to the camp; there won't be a shower, but you'll have the option to swim in lakes on a daily basis and to take a tent sauna. You'll have hammocks hanging around the camp and be cooking together over an open fire.

What You'll Eat

Meals are an all-hands-on-deck experience, from cooking to cleaning up. The meals will be prepared and cooked by the group over an open fire. The food on this trip is not only delicious, but also utilises local and freshly foraged ingredients wheneve…

Food and Dietary info

Meals are an all-hands-on-deck experience, from cooking to cleaning up. The meals will be prepared and cooked by the group over an open fire. The food on this trip is not only delicious, but also utilises local and freshly foraged ingredients whenever possible. All of the meals will be vegetarian with local root vegetables, beans, grains and grilled cheese. There will also be eggs and free-range lamb sausages available, from a nearby farm. You will forage some of the ingredients yourself, including juniper, blueberries and chanterelles (depending on the season), all of which will find a creative place in a scrumptious dish.

Given this trip is in such a remote location, it can challenging to accommodate alternative dietary requirements. However, you can always opt for vegetarian (many of the meals will already be vegetarian), and gluten-free can be accommodated as long as you let your host know in advance.

Optional Extras

Equipment / Kit Hire

Wellington Boot Hire
…/per person

Upgrades

Tents are twin share by default but if you would like a single tent, this can be arranged at no extra cost. Just let your host know when booking.

To request any extras, message your host via your Much Better Adventures account once you have booked your trip.

All extras must be paid before your trip starts.

Trip level explained

Level 1

Easy

This is an easy adventure which can be managed and enjoyed by anyone with basic fitness levels. You'll be hiking for a few hours each day, however there are plenty of stops as you wait silently with binoculars to view the various wildlife, and hopefully a wolf pack or two. Note that the long hours of daylight during June and July mean that you have to stay out until late tracking wildlife, often until after midnight. No previous experience of forest yoga or wild camping is required.

On some occasions there may be short sections of walking on off-trail terrain where it can be rough, rocky, mossy, wet and slippery. Such walks may even take place in darkness (with head torches) but the pace is slow, with stops along the way and rarely last for more than an hour.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

For me, this trip was a lovely balance between wildlife and wellness with nature at its heart. I've taken home many memories: sitting silently on a rocky outcrop above the forest watching a stunning sunset; Linda's wolf call and the haunting response minutes later; moose-spotting under the stars; digging my toes into the forest floor during yoga; tucked up warm in my tipi listening to the forest; night swimming in a misty lake and early morning dips with sauna; gorgeous food, campfire coffee and chaga tea. All with a fantastic group who made camp-life fun and easy. There is always an element of luck finding wildlife but a big thank you to our amazing guides, Linda and Eddie, whose expertise, insight and meticulous planning made this adventure possible and showed us how to walk a little lighter and quieter on this earth.

What a way to spend a bank holiday weekend. Every part of it was amazing, even the first day/night in the rain didn't put a dampener on things. From morning swims in the lake to cutting down a tree to carve from, wolf howls and so many moose it was absolutely fantastic. The food was so good and plenty of it, you certainly won't go hungry. Would recommend to anyone for a peaceful getaway.

Just got back from a wonderful weekend in rural Sweden. I had a great time swimming, hearing wolves and seeing a moose. The location of the campsite by the lake is stunning. Great food throughout that was prepared and then we took it in turns to get ready with minimal cooking. I personally didn’t enjoy the camping part but I didn’t sleep well but most people did. Wonder group of people as well as excellent guides in Linda and Eddie so informative, personable and added so much to the adventure.

This was such a wonderful trip, the location and campsite was beautiful. Right from the very beginning our guides Sam and Daniel led the way, their passion for the wilderness and their country shone through at every opportunity. The peace and tranquility was everything, if you have a busy working life this trip will really you help reset. Shout out to my fellow travellers, you really added to the trip with care and compassion and a genuine desire to work together. Can’t recommend this trip enough, 3rd time using much better adventures and this was the best trip yet. The wolves howling will stay with me for a long time.

This holiday was like camping on steroids. Sleeping under canvas - tick; staying in a forest - tick; cooking on an open fire - tick; swimming in a millpond-still lake with the morning mist floating on the surface - tick; warming up afterwards in a roasty-toasty sauna - tick; moose spotting - tick; and that beautiful, doleful sound of the wolves howling as the full moon rose above the trees - double tick. I feel the planets aligned to give us all the above and three days of glorious weather for this holiday. Now, how are we going to better this in the future?

Sweden - what a revelation. We are so happy that we booked this trip … I can’t praise our guides Daniel and Zsombor enough. Thank you for a perfect trip 🇸🇪💙💛

  • Wolf Tracking & Wild Swimming Sweden

    Emma C. August 2025
I've just returned from a wonderful few days camping in a pine forest by a beautiful lake, swimming in the lake, chilling out in the pop-up sauna & eating meals cooked over an open camp fire. Our two guides, Sam & Daniel, were uber-friendly, true wildlife and wild plant experts & fantastic at making sure everyone was looked after. The cherry on the cake was that we were lucky enough to hear wolves howl and see a mama moose and her calf. Thank you for a wonderful little holiday. Highly recommended.
  • Weekend in the Woods

    Polly M. August 2025
Delightful way to spend a long weekend. The camp was beautiful and well equipped, not just basic wild camping. Lots of nice places to sit around and relax. Encouraged to all get involved in all the jobs helping out, but never felt like “work” more helping the group have a lovely time. Sam and Daniel were amazing. Knowledgeable, calm, kind, patient…. everything you want from guides. We were super well looked after- after a cold first night they went to get us some blankets. Keen to make sure we were all having a lovely time. We were. There were plenty of opportunities to rest and relax, wild swim and sauna. This combined with learning to whittle, casual walks through the wood for trees, animal tracking and foraging (nothing at all strenuous) and looking in clearings for moose. We were lucky enough to hear lots of wolves and see moose which was fabulous, up the weekend was amazing and they were the exciting bonuses, not the key to it being a good weekend. The group were lovely. We had a really lovely final moment together as a group to reflect and it showed how much we had all been a happy unit and appreciated the trip it’s self but also our time together. Thank you Sam, Daniel and the wonderful group for a fabulous trip.

A beautiful location - great food and fantastic guides Linda and Linda who shared their knowledge and passion for nature, the wildlife and the environment. Leave your phone in your bag and soak up the peaceful surroundings. Be prepared for basic no frills camping.
  • What a trip!

    Sam M. July 2025
I had such a good time on this trip, the people, tents, lake swims, food and activities were all exactly what I needed. Can't thank the guides enough. This was my 3rd MBA trip and it certainly won't be my last.
  • What a weekend!

    Martha B. July 2025
I said to a few of my group on the trip, 'I won't be able to go on holiday again unless it's like this. ' I feel immensely grateful and honoured to have had this experience with such terrific people in such a special part of the planet. Linda S and Linda Å were fantastic guides, and it was a treat to have Daniel and Sam there helping out too. We learned how to chop wood, carve knives and to track animals with all our senses (to name but a few of the magical activities on this adventure. ) We had plenty of time to relax around camp and go foraging for blueberries and other treats. Prepping meals together was great fun and we ate like royalty. Having a lake for swimming and a pop up sauna on our doorstep was a delight! I advise future wild campers and wildlife trackers to go into this experience with an open mind and more importantly an open heart. Listen to your guides and each other. Absorb every sight, sound, smell, taste and other sensation. Bring good bug repellent and one of those hats that has an anti-insect net attached - a few people had them when we went to watch for the wolves and I was a bit envious. Be kind, courteous and inquisitive and you are sure to have a life changing experience.
  • Unforgettable - A trip of a lifetime

    Emma A. July 2025
This trip completely surpassed my expectations — it was a deeply enriching and unforgettable experience from start to finish. The real stars of the show were our incredible guides. Simon brought the forest to life with his deep knowledge, humour, and passion for wildlife. The two Lindas were so inspiring — full of passion too, wisdom, and a clear love for the land. All three of them went above and beyond to make the experience unforgettable. We were lucky enough to hear wolves howling in the distance, and to spot 5 moose and wild boar roaming freely in their natural habitat. Knowing we were in an area shaped by strong local conservation efforts made every encounter even more meaningful. The trip was beautifully varied — from the restorative yoga session in the forest, to sharing delicious campfire meals together. I’ll never forget the joy of wild swimming in secluded lakes and the rejuvenation of the wood-fired tent sauna. This wasn’t just a inspiring break — it was a full-body, full-heart adventure. A beautiful balance of nature, connection, and learning. Truly a trip of a lifetime.

A special experience with special people in particular Simon the tour leader. To cut away from the day to day and the need for total quiet with no distractions when pursuing the wildlife provides time for reflection that works on many levels. It was a reset of life’s needs and objectives.

From the minute I arrived I could not have felt more taken care of. Amazing, friendly and incredibly knowledgable guides who struck a perfect balance between fun and mindful. Their passion and love for nature was evident from the beginning. They worked so hard to give us the best experience. The food and chill out time at the camp was perfect. We heard the wolves and saw moose which was magical but to be honest, even if we hadn’t it would still have been the trip of a lifetime. Thankyou so much Simon and the two Lindas, you were fantastic.
  • An adventure to exceed expectations

    Amanda B. June 2025
This was the trip and reset I never knew I needed, and certainly one to do if you are passionate about wildlife and experiencing raw nature in the Nordics. I went on this trip with an open mind as nothing was guaranteed in terms of hearing wolves or seeing moose, especially very on in the season but it didn't need to be a concern. We were very fortunate to be able to hear the wolves howl on multiple occasions as well as seeing a variety of other wildlife like moose and wild boar. Simon was so knowledgable (anything he didn't know about the wolves, moose or local area wasn't worth knowing) and his passion really came across as well as respect for the wildlife to ensure us paying guests and the animals were cared for. The late nights out looking for wolves and moose was very well balanced with other activities in camp like wood carving, wild swimming, forest yoga and sauna. I have come away with so much knowledge about Swedish wildlife, memories and feeling relaxed and fulfilled. Would highly recommend to anyone who is considering this trip!

We travelled as a middle aged couple. We had a fantastic time. Mixed group of couples and solo travellers added a nice vibe to the trip. Loved the late nights, campfires, lake swimming, and the wildlife tracking was excellent. Simon made it feel exciting, it was special seeing his joy at hearing the first howl of season. Food was tasty and plentiful. The two Linda’s added a reconnection element to the trip. Julia found the yoga under trees the best yoga experience she’s ever had!

    Matthew C. September 2024
It was an absolutely amazing trip! The highlight for me was the wild swimming in the lake—such a peaceful and invigorating experience. I also loved sitting around the campfire with a like-minded group, sharing stories under the stars. But the most unforgettable moment was hearing the wolves howl at night—it was magical and something I’ll remember forever. We were even lucky enough to see a moose at night, which was the perfect end to an incredible adventure.
  • I left feeling closer to nature

    Gemma C. September 2024
On Simon's signal, we undo our seat belts and silently slide the doors of the van open before hopping out, A-Team style. As we stand as still as the silhouetted pines, Simon howls into the forest. We hold our breath. The stars glint, distant lightning flashes. After what feels like a lifetime, the wolves howl in response - adults and pups yelping into the night. We walk to the edges of the cold, dark lake and there, we see the fresh pawprint of a pup, wet on a stone. This trip was absolutely awesome - we swam in the lake at our camp, foraged for lingonberries and bilberries, carved wooden butterknives, and watched a family of moose eating in the forest. Food is excellent and Simon is the most wonderful guide. Cannot recommend this trip enough!! One tip, though: bring mozzie spray, a buff to cover your face from the mozzies, and don't just wear leggings - you need walking trousers, as the bugs will bite you through your leggings!
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our adventure

    Melanie K. August 2024
We thoroughly enjoyed our adventure in the Swedish wilderness. Our guides, Simon and Sofia, were so friendly, knowledgeable and well organised. Their passion for their jobs is so clear. Hearing the wolves howling and seeing moose roaming was absolutely amazing. The information provided in advance is spot on and I don’t feel like there was anything else I needed to know. I was happy sleeping in the tent and kept dry and warm at all times (even with some rain), and slept soundly on the airbed and the very nice sleeping bag provided. The itinerary does state wild tracking, so don’t expect to actually see a wolf, they are not in large packs like you see on TV, they are clever and keep out of sight. The food was delicious and healthy, and I was impressed with how organised everything was considering we were in the middle of nowhere. Catering for 12 is difficult even when you have a kitchen. The swimming and camp sauna added to the whole experience and cooking on campfire each day was lovely, I’ve been home 5 days and I miss it. Thank you to the Much Better Adventures and Wild Sweden team, a truly amazing experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.
  • Everything and more in 24 hours!

What a fantastic trip! We saw / heard it all: moose, wolves and beavers. Highly recommend the fabulous tour guides and their encyclopaedic knowledge of Swedish wildlife. Would book again in a heartbeat.

    Ben S. August 2024
Had a truly wonderful trip with Sofia and Simon, every detail was well thought out and they delivered an excellent wild camping experience. Not to brag but we successfully tracked wolves and moose, and a few extra surprises; being immersed in such a rich habitat will stay with me for a long time. Anyone with basic fitness would love this trip, the hikes were straightforward and we had a good balance of activities and down time to enjoy the wild swimming and sauna. I always meet like minded people on this sort of holiday, great to connect in the old fashioned way, chatting round a campfire

What an amazing trip. The site next to the lake was simply beautiful and perfect for both dawn and midnight swims. Marcus is a very knowledgeable guide and his enthusiasm for the wolves and all flora and fauna cannot be matched. Christiana's warm and welcoming tones also made everyone feel at ease. A great group of like minded people, everyone got on and we left as friends. Thank you Much Better Adventures, your adventures are indeed.. much better!!
  • Adventure and recovery

    Sue H. July 2024
Marcus, with his passion for the forest and all that lives in it, and Christiana, with her calm and culinary expertise, make a great team. For me, it was the perfect combination of adventure and recovery. Best moments were the walks at dusk, swimming in the lake, the sauna, hearing the wolves howl, watching moose, chatting round the fire, learning to call like a moose, and getting to know a really interesting bunch of people. The inflatable sleeping mat was comfy so I slept pretty well. Bring a sleeping mask if you get disturbed by dawn light. There are mosquitoes at times, so be prepared. They do have mosquito hats but I would have brought my own if I'd known, just in case. I went home with 5 bites just on my forehead. Fortunately the memories of this wonderful trip will last much longer than the itching!

FAQs

Wildlife tracking allows you an incredible window into the behaviour of animal species and enables you to have a far greater understanding not only of that animal, but how it interacts with and depends upon the other fauna and flora around it.

Wolves returned in the early 1980s to Sweden and Scandinavia since they first were claimed extinct in the 1960s. Three wolves migrated from the Russian-Finnish population all the way to the county of Värmland in Southern Sweden, close to the Norwegian border. These wolves founded the new wolf population and multiplied successfully into about 200 individuals. Without the presence of predators such as wolves, ecosystems are less healthy and support less abundant wild nature, so their comeback ignited a chain reaction, boosting the restoration of ecosystems that had been degraded in their absence.

Your host for this rewilding adventure is a leader in nature-based tourism and a proud member of the European Rewilding Network, an initiative made possible by Rewilding Europe. They allow guests the opportunity for encounters with wild animals such as moose, wolves, beavers and bears in a way that connects people with nature, to educate people about the importance of biodiversity and a healthy ecosystem, and to inspire people to take action to save the wildlife and the environment. This also creates economic opportunities for local communities.

The aim is to be in the presence of the wolves - to hear them howl but not necessarily see them. Wolves in Sweden are very shy and difficult to see in the wild since the forests are dense. The main focus is therefore to listen for wolves howling and search for tracks including paw prints, territorial markings, and remnants of prey. Through this, you'll learn about wolves and their habitat. Hearing a pack of wolves howl in the wilderness of a dark forest is quite something.

If the situation is promising, you may also watch for wolves at some strategic locations. It is rare to see the wolves but it does happen occasionally.

On a typical day in July and August temperatures are between 15-25°C. During the evening tracking adventures you hike through the forest and temperatures will be between 10-15°C. In September, you can expect temperatures to be about 5°C lower than this. The undergrowth is often damp, so waterproof shoes or boots are essential to avoid wet and cold feet.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 55kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
