Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

This trek follows established trails through Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, with daily hikes of 4–7 hours. You’ll be walking between traditional villages, climbing to scenic mountain passes such as Tizi Mzzik (2500m) and Tizi n’Tamatert (2279m), with daily ascents and descents often between 400–800 metres. While no technical skills are needed, the terrain can be rocky, uneven, and exposed in parts.

Although we avoid departures in the peak of summer, high temperatures and sun exposure can still add to the challenge, particularly on steeper sections and longer hiking days. Guides will manage the pace and provide regular breaks.

You should be comfortable hiking for multiple consecutive days, covering up to 15km per day, with a daypack. This trip is ideal for active walkers with a moderate level of fitness and stamina—no previous mountain experience is necessary, but some preparation will help, especially if you’re not used to hiking in heat or over uneven ground.

Regular hill walks, gym cardio sessions, or long countryside hikes in the lead-up to your trip will put you in a great position to enjoy every step of this adventure

What will I need to carry?

Mules will carry your main overnight luggage during the trek and you will need to carry your daypack with your daytime essentials (extra layer, snacks, water etc.). For the welfare of the mules, please ensure your main overnight luggage is in a soft-sided bag and weighs no more than 15kg.

High Altitude Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m. At this altitude some people may experience symptoms associated with Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Previous experience at high altitude is not necessarily an indicator of future performance. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with altitude by carefully managing the rate of ascent and the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided. Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover up to the maximum altitude visited on this trip as well as emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

Climate Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely high during the times of year when this trip operates. High humidity and limited access to shade can also be factors, and warm temperatures can continue into the nighttime, which additionally influence the body’s ability to cool down. Personal care should be taken to keep as cool as possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration. Very high temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at cooler temperatures. People may experience symptoms associated with dehydration and Heat Stroke. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

Well organised. Good lengths of hikes brilliantly led by Mohamed and Siad. Everything was pery.

My husband and I have just come back from a fabulous adventure doing the Lodge to Lodge Trek in the Atlas Mountains. The organisation was fantastic and the accomodations at all the locations were really good. I really enjoyed staying at the first mountain lodge in Marigha as it had a pool, perfect to cool down in after our first day hike. Our guides were very good and there was always one of them at the back of the group, because of a knee injury I was slower than other members of our group walking down hill but I never felt rushed and the pace was set by the group and our different abilities. Picnics in the valley were absolutely super, mint tea was refreshing and everything was freshly cooked. As a vegetarian I was extremely well catered for. This was our first experience of trekking with MBA and we are now looking for another trip as we enjoyed our trip to Morocco and the Atlas Mountains so much.

A great way to visit Morocco seeing a variety of landscapes and people and an authentic view of local people and food. We added on a couple of extra days in Marrakech staying at the excellent Riad View Point. Hussain was a knowledgeable and entertaining guide and supported by an efficient local team.

This 4-day lodge to lodge trek was a real treat and exactly what I was looking for. I went at the end of February and expected it to be cold, but it was actually unexpectedly quite warm, so bringing layers that you can peel off as needed as the day warms up, is a must. As a solo traveler in my mid-50s I found the camaraderie and support amongst my fellow travelers (a diverse group of 10 of us) to be amazing - we shared so many good conversations and laughter both along the trails and sitting around the table sharing meals. The two local guides with Aztat Trekking Company were very knowledgeable about local customs and happy to share their backgrounds and insights with us. They also patiently answered all our questions about the trail conditions and provided us with options when appropriate. The hiking days were long, but the guides set an appropriate pace and we had adequate rest breaks along the way as needed. I did prepare with some training hikes before the trip and was glad I did so. Every day included beautiful scenery - especially of the Atlas Mountains, plus of many villages nestled in among the steep hillsides and down in the valleys. Hiking poles were very beneficial, especially for balance on steep and rocky trails. For this particular route, hiking day # 2 was the hardest as it had a very steep slippery rocky section, followed by a long open hot road to the village. But then day # 3 when we hiked to Tizi Mzik pass at 8143 ft, which was the only section where we encountered snow on the trail, was just stunning! Amazing views of snow capped mountains, red rocks, and lush green valleys, dotted with goats and the occasional mule or donkey. The food was amazing - lunch cooked and prepared fresh each day at a lunch spot along the way, plus the evening meals at the lodges were all delicious. The cooks were very accommodating to dietary requirements for several in our group. And the Moroccan mint tea - wow! The lodging in Marrakesh, plus two of the lodges along the route were wonderful. The night in Azzaden Lodge, the beds were hard. All the lodges had hot showers and heating units, plus nice thick blankets, which were necessary for the cooler nights. Make sure you step outside on the veranda after dinner to see the beautiful dark night skies filled with brilliant stars!

My wife and I recently completed a 4-day hiking trip in the Atlas Mountains with Much Better Adventures, and it was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The itinerary was well thought out, offering a perfect balance between challenge and enjoyment. Each day brought something new—whether it was stunning mountain passes, traditional Berber villages, or breathtaking panoramic views. The hiking was definitely rewarding if challenging at times. I would recommend bringing walking poles. What really made the trip stand out was the organisation. Everything ran smoothly, from transfers to accommodation and meals. Our two guides, Lachen and Mohammed, were exceptional—knowledgeable, friendly, and always attentive to the group’s needs. They shared insights into the local culture and landscape that really enriched the experience. The food was another highlight—fresh, hearty, and exactly what you needed at lunch time after a long day of hiking. Staying in local accommodation added an authentic touch and gave a real sense of connection to the area and its people. Overall, I would highly recommend this trip to anyone looking for a well-organised adventure in a truly beautiful part of the world. Much Better Adventures delivered an experience that was both exciting and memorable, and I wouldn’t hesitate to travel with them again.

We went in January 2026 and we were advised it was the worst weather they have had for 16 years. The weather was extremely cold and lots of snow. Unfortunately the lodges were not equipped for this weather therfore the main source of heating was the fire in the communal dining room. Some rooms were cold and some did not have hot water to have a bath or shower after a day of hiking. If there was hot water and warm rooms this would 100% be a 5 star trip. In the summer the lodges would have been amazing The hikes were great with amazing views The tour guide leader was great The food was absolutely amazing, freshly cooked and very tasty The mules are very well taken care of We had a great group I would recommend this trip in warm season and would use MBA as everything was very well organised

The program also provides a monthly clinic which offers free veterinary care to the animals and the distribution of humane tack.

Ramadan is expected to take place from 17th February to 19th March 2026. The national holiday of Eid ul-Fitr will follow for 2-3 days. Ramadan is an Islamic festival where the religious do not eat or drink during daylight hours. While this is a really interesting time to travel, especially to witness celebrations where the fast is broken in the evenings, you can expect some business hours will be shortened, alcohol is not permitted during daylight hours and some restaurants will be closed during this festival period. Activities for local people tend to be limited during the day and the nights are very active in cities with lots of different foods being sold and consumed. Ramadan will not affect the inclusions on your trip, although you should be aware that dinners will be served after locals break their fast in the evenings.

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.

It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.

Don't just take our word for it:

  • 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
  • 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
  • 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends

From April to October, daytime temperatures in the valleys are typically warm (25 - 30°C) but cool off considerably at night, and the higher you go, the cooler it gets. In the winter, daytime temperatures are still warm (10 - 20°C), but nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing. Afternoon storms are always possible in the Atlas Mountains during the summer months, but typically the winter months are wetter.

It rains a little in the valleys and snows on the peaks for a few days a month in the winter. Still, the amounts are small and generally, they don’t prevent anyone from enjoying the trek. The valleys are still warm and the snow on the high peaks makes the scenery that much more beautiful!

Spring and autumn temperatures in Marrakech average 10 - 25 °C, and it rains a small amount roughly 7 days each month. From June to September it gets quite hot in the city, averaging 15 - 35 °C, and it only rains a few days each month. In the height of summer, daytime temperatures in Marrakech have been known to approach 45°C on occasions so please ensure that you come prepared with sun protection, light and airy clothing and electrolytes/rehydration solutions if travelling at this time of year.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 123kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
