Trip level explained

Level 6

Challenging-Tough

Full days of scenic hiking, loose footing, altitude - you'll need a good level of fitness for this one. The walking, however, is of a moderate difficulty and relatively straightforward and the views make the journey more than worthwhile!

What will I need to carry?

Mules will carry your main overnight luggage during the trek and you will need to carry your daypack with your daytime essentials (extra layer, snacks, water etc.). For the welfare of the mules, please ensure your main overnight luggage is in a soft-sided bag and weighs no more than 15kg.

High Altitude Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m. At this altitude some people may experience symptoms associated with Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Previous experience at high altitude is not necessarily an indicator of future performance. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with altitude by carefully managing the rate of ascent and the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided. Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover up to the maximum altitude visited on this trip as well as emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

The staff and guides at much better adventures and Aztat Treks were brilliant. They were really helpful and knowledgeable. Our group of 13 had an amazing time and felt safe and organised on our adventure. The food was brilliant, lots of it and catered for everyone’s tastes. The transport was always on time and the drivers were very informative of our surroundings. The accommodation was lovely and the refuge, though basic, was much better than I imagined and the guides on the trip couldn’t do enough to help out. I would definitely recommend, and I know I’ll be booking with this company again in the near future.

We had a fantastic time in Marrakesh, the traditional riads were amazing places, but more importantly lovely to stay in. The mountain guides were excellent, Mustafa and Kalib were always joking and watching the group as they should. Their instructions were always clear and sometimes firm but fair in order to keep everyone safe on the mountains. I am a fussy eater, but the food they supplied was delicious and there was so much of it we were literally stuffed. Due to snow during the night the pass was closed so we couldn't summit the last peak Toubkal. However; on the hike back to Imlil the guides were fully aware of our disappointment and showed us some beautiful sites. I would 100% recommend Mustafa's team if you are heading to Morocco to summit Toubkal, they will really look after you.

  • Simon M.

An amazing experience and the guides from Aztat Treks were exceptional in their help, advice and guidance ensuring that everyone in the group were well supported in being able to achieve the summit of Mount Toubkal!

Absolutely fantastic trip with an amazing group of people. I went with a friend but would have felt very comfortable on my own as everyone was so friendly. There was quite a lot of remaining snow which made walking conditions difficult but made the challenge & the scenery even better. The tour guides were brilliant & couldn’t do enough to help. The refuge isn’t great, but the food was fantastic. Some dishes were of good restaurant quality. Not an expensive trip so great value for money. I would thoroughly recommend this trip with this company & these guides.

Fantastic time with fantastic people. Very well organised. Our hiking group was of mixed ability and everyone was looked after very well. The guides and chefs were amazing and made it an unforgettable experience.

I had a brilliant time on the trip, and the group of people really made the experience. As my first solo group trip, I thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone along the way. The guides were excellent — friendly, supportive, and always looking after the group. The food at the refuge was also much better than expected, and the scenery was incredible throughout. I think the guides made the right decision to do Toubkal first, as I doubt as many people would have reached the summit otherwise. One area for improvement was the pace on the Toubkal climb. We moved quite slowly, which meant very late meals and only a few hours of sleep before the final day. An earlier start may have helped with recovery before the remaining peaks.

  • Danielle G.

WOW. This was easily the hardest mountain I’ve ever climbed. The days were long and the sleep was little (14 people in one room is a lot). The guides are absolutely outstanding. Their fitness level is something else and they can not do enough for you. The food is nice and there is plenty to eat. I never felt hungry. The trip is really well organised and I highly recomend this company.

The hiking and landscape were exactly as expected and well worth the trip. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the food provision as someone with coeliac disease. Despite asking twice prior to coming if they'll be enough for me (and despite bringing lots of snacks), on the day we did the twin peaks we were served pasta for both lunch and dinner with no gluten free alternative for me or another gluten free traveller. When I asked if it was possible to have rice, the guide smiled and told me we'd have rice tomorrow. The only food offered during the hike was a tuna sandwich, which again we couldn't eat therefore minimal carbs were eaten. This made the hike up Mt Toubkal the following morning more difficult than necessary as I'd had 24 hours with very little carbohydrate. Sleeping arrangements were also less than ideal with groups of people getting up at various points during the night to start their hikes rather than just sleeping everyone doing the same hike in the same room. Our group was very variable in pace and our 2 guides were not enough for 15 people. Sadly, based on my experience I am unlikely to recommend this company to friends.

First time with Much Better Adventures. It was an amazing trip! MBA organised everything really well from airport transfers to food. The group was amazing and the guides really looked after us. Thanks to the cooks and muleteers as well. It was challenging as advertised but I loved every second of it!

From start to finish we were so well looked after and everything was taken care of. Delicious food, very attentive guides who got us through some challenging times ! An amazing and unforgettable experience
  • A challenging and memorable experience !

    Paul N. October 2025
This was a very enjoyable experience and certainly lived up to its billing as ‘challenging’. Although it is a lower altitude than Kilimanjaro, I would say this is harder because there is less time to acclimatise to the altitude. Much of the climb is also steeper, so a good level of fitness is a real advantage. The great organisation from MBA, excellent guiding and friendliness of the local people all helped make the overall experience very memorable!
  • Challenging but brilliant adventure!

    Elizabeth T. October 2025
This was another great trip with MBA; the guides at Aztat Tours were brilliant and made sure that each and every person on this trip was managing and having fun! They were absolutely fantastic, every step of the way, especially on the descent. The demand of this trip definitely isn't to be sniffed at, 3 days on the trot of 1000m ascent is tough, and hiking all the way back to Imlil on day 4 is no mean feat, especially for those with questionable knees! This trip is maybe not for those with fears of heights, some of the scrambles on Mt Ouanoukrim came with a pretty exposed drop to one side. . . The riads in Marrakech were both very nice, the refuge wasn't anything special, but it was a bed and good food, the hot showers were few and far between, but this is to be somewhat expected on a mountain! All in all, a great trip with fantastic guides and brilliant company providing entertainment and laughs at all hours of the day :)
  • Brilliant experience

    Laura H. October 2025
Super impressed with the whole trip. From pick up at airport to drop off back in Marrakech, everything was well organised and went smoothly. Great communication before and during. Trek itself was tough but manageable and the guides were brilliant - I’m not very confident coming down, especially on scree, but they didn’t hesitate to help me. The riads we stayed in were nice and the refuge was better than expected too. Overall I’d recommend the trek itself and Much Better Adventures - we will definitely be booking through them again!
  • A beautiful challenge

    Sean G. October 2025
A challenging but worthwhile experience. Morocco is beautiful, and on this trip you get to experience the Moroccan's excellent hospitality and the beauty of their country. The trek itself is challenging, be prepared for it, but the guides make this an enjoyable experience.
  • Epic Challenging Adventure

    Kristi E. October 2025
From start to finish, this experience was well organized. And especially once in Marrakech the local team there ABSOLUTELY know what they were doing, including the staff at the Riads that they use. There are no appropriate words to acknowledge the expertise and personalities of our guides Mustafa and Mustapha. They worked tirelessly to ensure each person in the group would rise to the challenge. They completely focused on the trekkers whether getting us through a scramble or climb on the mountain or making sure we had food and water back at base camp. And the FOOD!! The cook this team brings with them is 5 Star! Amazing!!! The quality and quantity of the food was unexpected and outstanding! Even their muleteer team pitched in to help when needed. As for the refuge…. . It’s a refuge. Just accept you’re not going to sleep much anyway and it is just part of the experience. The tour company provided awesome sleeping bags BUT the bathrooms and showers will leave you dreaming about your return home😉 THANK YOU Aztat tours for all that you did! Until next time…. For Now YALLAH!

Awesome experience. . . . . from booking to returning home the whole experience was brilliant! The booking process was easy, any quires were answered promptly either by MBA or the Moroccan agents. Collection from and return transport for the airport were faultless friendly and safe. I stayed in 2 separate Riads, both were clean, the staff were exemplary, nothing was too much trouble. The mountain guides Abdul and Mustafa went above and beyond all expectations I had of them. If I tried to say more about them I would run out of superlatives! The refuge was basic but far better than many I have experienced in the past. I am vegetarian and had wondered what the food would be like. Again everything we had was very tasty and plentiful. Lastly a mention about the group, as a solo traveller one wonders if the group will gel and work together to support each other. THE GROUP WERE INCREDIBLE. We all seemed to get on from the minute we all met. Everyone had different experiences to share which I found incredibly enriching. Lastly in our group there was a 50 year age difference between youngest and oldest (I was the oldest). Again don't hesitate it's a really uplifting experience.
  • What an adventure. .

    Keith M. October 2025
From the moment we booked our trip we knew it was going to be amazing…. The attention to detail during the booking process was an indication of what was to come. The moment we landed at Marrakech airport and met our transport to our Riad we were completely taken care of. . from the accommodation, food and the trek it self every thing was thought of…. We were looked after completely. . Our guides were amazing. . they took care of us making sure we were properly acclimatising to the altitude. . the pacing to the summits ensured we all enjoyed the experience. A massive shout out to Abdul who ensured we all had an Amazing adventure. Our group was fantastic. . we all gelled from the off everyone supported each other. A truly amazing trip…. We will definitely be booking again with Much Better Adventures. If I could give 10 stars I would.

Brilliant trip, if you like a challenge and aren't afraid to rough it for a few days with a group of like minded people then this trip is definitely for you. The views make the early starts worthwhile! Would definitely recommend it, we'll organised, great guides and food.

    Brian L. October 2025
Awesome trip and a great group of people. Be prepared to put in some hard work, but the end results are astounding! You also need to be a bit open minded and go with the flow regarding the hospitality, but that’s all part of the fun and making memories with new people. Would highly recommend this trip!
  • Three Peaks Challenge 4 -8 October 2025

    Simon C. October 2025
The mountain walks and views were awesome. Mount Toubkal is a bucket list activity, but for good reason - the night ascent and sunrise at the summit were unforgettable. Mount Ouanoukrim is the better hillwalk however, and pairing it with Toubkal is a good idea. The trip was more difficult than I expected. In particular this was because of sleep deprivation - I had not realised that we would be getting up in the middle of the night. I did the three days of hard walking on a total of about 7 hours sleep. I am an experienced hillwalker/climber but this was exhausting. Morocco is not for vegetarians - or even pescatarians. The salads were good, but if I never have another vegetable tagine it will be too soon. And given the amount of exercise we were doing, I just needed a lot more calories. Riad Habib is basic, but ok. Riad View Point was a lot nicer, thanks to the lovely roof terrace. The Mouflon refuge was full - indeed overcrowded. The dormitory was full, very cramped, noisy and hot - I found it very hard to sleep. If I had known it was going to be like that I would have taken a tent and camped outside. The toilets and showers were pretty grim and definitely in need of refurbishment. The itinerary was very intense. I coped, but it took two full days to recover. An extra day to acclimatise at the refuge would have made it better. The group dynamic was very good except for one individual who did not wish to engage with or speak to anyone else. Bizarre and discomforting behaviour. Everyone else was friendly and outgoing and I enjoyed their company. The booking experience was good. I was slightly concerned to have heard nothing re arrangements for the trip until less than ten days beforehand, at which point I sent an inquiring email. Thereafter it was all fine - as were the taxis, transfers, luggage portering etc The guides, Moustafa and Lamal, were great. Friendly, supportive, well organised, and hard working. Can't speak too highly of them. The attached photo is a nice shot of Mustafa at the top of the scramble up to Mount Ouanoukrim, with Toubkal behind him.

Top marks to our guides who were excellent every step of the way. The itinerary was challenging and rewarding. Will definitely be booking further trips in the Atlas mountains.
  • Excellent trip with excellent guides

    Derek O. October 2025
It's very accurately called Three Peaks Challenge. Doing the three peaks in 3 days including trekking up and down from Imlil was certainly a challenge for me, but manageable. Challenge includes two early morning starts, cramped dormitories, high altitude and rocky/scree filled paths. But all manageable with help of excellent guides (shout out to Moustapha), tireless cooks and behind scenes administration by Mouna. All in all an excellent trip which provided all that was promised.

Unbelievable trip from start to finish, had the pleasure of meeting a great group of people & have made some amazing memories. It’s a tough challenge but well worth the effort. The sunrise climb was truly spectacular. The guides were amazing & the food was lovely, lots of it. Excellent trip & well recommended for all you adventurers out there. This was my second trip with MBA & I’m already looking forward to the next one.
  • Challenging, Stunning, and Exceptionally Well-Organized

The organisation was seamless - Aztac arranged a private pickup for me from Casablanca Airport at a better price than I could find myself, and booked an extra night in Marrakech pre-tour with zero hassle. The hikes were absolutely spectacular – breathtaking landscapes, remote trails, and truly unique views that made every step worth it. True to its name, this is definitely a challenge – the terrain is uneven, and there’s more scrambling than I anticipated, but that just added to the adventure. I felt completely safe and supported thanks to the professional and experienced guides Mustafa and Mohammed, who allowed me to really enjoy the experience. The mountain refuge is very basic and the toilet facilities weren’t the cleanest, but seems the only option at that altitude and the convenience makes up for it.

FAQs

Absolutely! We recognise that you may want to leave some of the kit you bring to Morocco somewhere safe before you start your trek. When you reach Imlil, you will be able to leave any non-essential items you don’t want to take on the hike at your local guide's base there.

Your host works with muleteers who collaborate with local charity, Spana, (The Society for the Protection of Animals and Nature) on the AMI program (Aid to the Mules of Imlil). The charity provides training, guidance and incentives to mule owners to encourage and support good care for their animals in all aspects of their working lives. The program also provides a monthly clinic which offers free veterinary care to the animals and the distribution of humane tack.

Ramadan is expected to take place from 17th February to 19th March 2026. The national holiday of Eid ul-Fitr will follow for 2-3 days. Ramadan is an Islamic festival where the religious do not eat or drink during daylight hours. While this is a really interesting time to travel, especially to witness celebrations where the fast is broken in the evenings, you can expect some business hours will be shortened, alcohol is not permitted during daylight hours and some restaurants will be closed during this festival period. Activities for local people tend to be limited during the day and the nights are very active in cities with lots of different foods being sold and consumed. Ramadan will not affect the inclusions on your trip, although you should be aware that dinners will be served after locals break their fast in the evenings.

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

Spring and autumn temperatures in Marrakech average 10 - 25 °C, and it rains a small amount roughly 7 days each month. From June to September it gets quite hot in the city, averaging 15 - 35 °C, and it only rains a few days each month. In the height of summer, daytime temperatures in Marrakech have been known to approach 45°C on occasions so please ensure that you come prepared with sun protection, light and airy clothing and electrolytes/rehydration solutions if travelling at this time of year.

In the Atlas Mountains from March to October daytime temperatures average 25 - 30°C but it cools off considerably at night, and the higher you go the colder it gets (you may even need gloves on a summit day in August!) Nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing at and above the mountain refuge. Afternoon storms are always possible, but they are usually quick and generally don’t prevent anyone from enjoying the trek.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 222kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
