This weekend is an ideal introduction to off-road riding. Some previous cycling experience is needed (i.e. you’ll need to be able to ride a bike!), but there’s no requirement to have done any off-road cycling before, as you’ll be provided with introductory-level guidance. A good base level of fitness is recommended – you should feel comfortable with the distances and elevations specified in the itinerary.
Far from being unscripted, the routes featured on this trip are specially designed to showcase the best of the surrounding countryside and woodland scenery, while offering a structured, enjoyable introduction to mixed-terrain riding within a ‘moderate’ trip grading. Expect a varied mix of surfaces, gradients and features typical of UK off-road riding. The terrain is wonderfully versatile and changes frequently – from ancient byways and gravel paths to forest tracks and open bridleways. Short, steep climbs and descents feature throughout the weekend, providing great opportunities to put your new skills into practice. While these inclines can be punchy, they’re always achievable, and you’re welcome to hop off and walk a section if you’d prefer.
The hand-picked routes have been pre-ridden and risk-assessed by the host, and daily ride safety briefings will provide advance knowledge of the specific terrains and ride characteristics you’ll encounter each day. The group will stick together at a sociable pace throughout the rides, re-grouping at regular, strategic points along the route – including at intersections and in the event of any mechanical issues. There may be moments where you might prefer to get off and push your bike for a short stretch, and it’s worth noting that weather conditions can have an impact on the state of the trails and tracks encountered.
Style of Riding: Mixed Terrain
This trip offers a varied riding experience across both paved and unpaved surfaces on a mountain bike. You'll mostly ride on wide gravel tracks and hard-packed dirt paths that can be bumpy or uneven in places. You'll also follow some quiet roads that are largely smooth with the occasional pothole, crack, or rough patch. While the terrain is diverse, it remains non-technical throughout — no singletrack or advanced bike handling skills are required.
Terrain Breakdown
Ride #1: surfaces approximately 64% unpaved, 22% paved, 14% asphalt
Ride #2: surfaces approximately 69% unpaved, 15% paved, 16% asphalt
