    Tallinn winter magic

Touch down in Tallinn Airport, then make your way to your central hotel. If you arrive on an early flight, your guide will meet you in the afternoon to guide you around the UNESCO-listed Old Town and show you the best panoramic spots. Tallinn is always a magical place, but it is in the winter that the city looks even more like it was plucked from the pages of a fairytale. Exploring it on foot is unbelievably picturesque and if you feel a bit cold, a traditional glühwein will warm you up and help you get into the winter mood. If you arrive on an evening flight, you can head straight to bed and meet your group on Day 2. Your adventure in the snow starts tomorrow!

Wave goodbye to the city lights and head out to Lahemaa National Park, one of the biggest and most important forest reserves in Europe. You'll make a couple of stops en route including a visit to the striking Jägala Waterfall. At approximately eight metres high and more than 50 metres wide, this is the widest natural waterfall in Estonia – and it's a true spectacle in winter, when the fall partially freezes and forms huge icy stalactites. You'll also stop at the Põhja-Kõrvemaa Nature Reserve for an exhilarating fat bike ride through snowy forest trails. The tracks are relatively flat and well-marked, making it ideal even if you've never fat-biked before. You'll then enjoy a unique igloo-sauna experience on the lake – followed by an icy dip for those who are feeling brave! The next two nights will be spent in a cosy, luxurious manor house with spa, nestled between frosty fields and slow-clad trees. Get a taster of this winter wonderland tonight as you head out on a short lantern-lit walk through the forest.

Don your snowshoes and head deep into the wilderness of Lahemaa National Park. Snowshoe through silent, snow-blanketed forests – eyes peeled for elk, wolf and moose tracks. Stop in a pristine, scenic spot and warm up with a hot meal and drinks cooked on a campfire. Have a restful afternoon with an optional reinvigorating hot sauna or spa treatment at the hotel.

Bogs and marshes are the true treasures of Estonia, being the oldest organic landscape in the country – some of which are up to 10,000 years old. This unique environment is remarkable throughout the year, but exploring them in the wintertime makes it eerily beautiful. Spot wildlife tracks left in the snow with the help of your experienced guide and if you are lucky, you may even come across elusive moose, lynx and foxes. This morning, you'll experience two other favourite Estonian winter pastimes: plough silently through the snow on kicksleds, then hit the rejuvenating, UNESCO-listed experience of the smoke sauna, covering yourself in honey and 'whisking' your skin with birch branches. Top off this authentic wellness experience with a relaxing dip in the hot tub.

This afternoon, you'll head back to the city where you'll have time to freshen up before heading out for a final celebratory farewell dinner and night in Tallinn – locals say the vodka tasting is a must!

  3. Day 5

    Goodbye Estonia!

    Breakfast included
    Show Day 5 detail

After four days of adventure and relaxation, it’s time to head home refreshed and revitalised. If you depart later today and you missed the visit to Tallinn Old Town on Day 1, your guide will be on hand to show you around. Alternatively, you can also opt to hit one of the great city saunas, such as the Iglupark, Kalma Sauna or Tallinn Sauna (the oldest in the city). If you leave today, it's time to say nägemiseni (see you soon!) and make your way to the airport, just a short tram journey away.

Food and Dietary info

Traditional Estonian food and drinks are linked to the history of the Baltic States and many dishes can be traced back to medieval times. As a result, Estonian food is hearty, wholesome and packed with seasonal flavours. In winter, warming stews, roasts and soups are always on the menu. There is no food quite as quintessentially Estonian as rye bread: rye has been cultivated in Estonia for more than a thousand years and is a central part of the nation's traditional agriculture. The other national dish, verivorst, is typically a winter meal and comprises barley, onions, allspice, marjoram and blood sausage, often alongside roasted pork and potatoes and served with sour cream, sauerkraut or seasonal berries. We are talking serious comfort food! Mulled wine, vodka and craft beer are especially popular in winter, to help bear the cold.

Vegetarians, vegans and other dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for, but please note that options may be limited – please just request on your passenger info form.

Trip level explained

Level 2

Easy-Moderate

This trip is suitable for anyone with basic fitness levels. None of the activities are hugely demanding and no previous experience or technical skills are required. You won't be exerting yourself for more than two or three hours at a time, and there is also plenty of relaxation and wellness time built into the trip. With two hours of private group sauna booked on Days 2 and 3, plus free access to the wellness centre at Vihula Manor, you'll balance the active time in the cold with plenty of pampering in the heat. To get the most out of the trip you should enjoy being out in the cold during the winter, and also come prepared with adequate warm clothing – see the kit list for guidance. The trip includes snowshoeing, fat biking and kicksledding. All activities will be suitable for first-timers and conducted at a leisurely pace.

Fat bikes have extra fat, knobbly tyres that are designed for riding on soft surfaces like sand and snow, and they have little or no suspension. The super-fat tyres distribute the rider’s mass across a larger area, so you don’t sink in and do gain more traction than you would with a standard tyre size. You can ride easily and with stability, even over firm snow and ice. You won't be riding very far, so anyone who can ride a bike at a basic level will enjoy fat biking though the picturesque forest tracks.

Snowshoeing is a type of hiking that uses a special type of footwear – a snowshoe – to spread your weight over a larger area, allowing you to move easily across powdery, snow-covered terrain. Snowshoeing is incredibly easy, comfortable and safe. You simply clip the snowshoe to the outside of your hiking boot and off you go. You'll be in the hands of local, experienced, and trained guides who know the area intimately and will guide you safely throughout the hike.

Kicksledding is an extremely fun winter activity that every Estonian loves. Originating from the Scandinavian countries, the kicksled includes a chair (for an optional carried passenger) mounted on a pair of flexible metal runners that extend backwards to about twice the chair's length. The sled is propelled by kicking and it works best on icy snow conditions and marked tracks.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a larger bag suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you, and then a small daysack to carry personal items during each day of the activities.

Climate Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely cold and consistently below freezing (0C/32F) during the times of year when this trip operates. Temperatures at night will likely be even colder. Personal care should be taken to keep as warm as possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration and nutrition. Very cold temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at warmer temperatures. In severe cold conditions people may experience symptoms associated with Exposure, Frostbite and Hypothermia. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with cold temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

I recently joined the Snow & Saunas trip in Estonia and had an amazing experience. As a solo traveller, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the group was fantastic -friendly, welcoming, and made the whole trip even more enjoyable. The guides (Anton and Ray) were excellent too: knowledgeable, supportive, and clearly passionate about what they do. Overall, a brilliant adventure and I’d highly recommend it to anyone considering going solo!

Well there wasn't a lot of snow (last one of these trips for the season), but this outdoorsy trip in Estonia was excellent regardless. The itinerary was outdoorsy and active, without being overly athletic. The saunas were the best bit - especially the smoke sauna experience (with the cauldron hot tub) and the igloo sauna by the lake. I have to say it was a shame the lack of snow meant the activities - especially fat biking and snow shoeing - had to be adjusted to the conditions, but we definitely made the best of what we had. Anton is a well organised and knowledgable guide and did everything he could to ensure we had a good time. Having Ray as a second guide was an added bonus - they both know a lot about nature, which made the (no) snow shoe walk through the forest and along the beach a particular highlight. It felt like they allowed us to immerse ourselves in Estonian nature for a couple of days, which was exactly what I wanted. A short trip, but well worth it.

I had a great time on this trip! The activities were well planned and executed, the group mates were great, and Anton was a very knowledgeable and fun leader! Even though there wasn’t much snow, we made the most of our time!

A brilliant trip to Estonia. The activities were all really fun and well led. We had a mix of weather but plenty of snow. Our guide Tiit was great, everything ran very smoothly even with some tricky driving conditions! This trip was the easiest rated MBA trip I’ve done and it was a nice balance of trying some new activities but with more relaxation time, especially great in the saunas!

A fabulous taste of magical winter in Estonia. With a fabulous guide who was personable, patient, well informed, enthusiastic, and a safe driver in challenging conditions, we gained a wonderful insight into this country. The combination of activities was well mixed / timed and never became too much of anything and was pitched perfectly. Activities which were fun and achievable complemented by a range of sauna types and other leisure activities. Overall, a great trip - a lot delivered in a short time, without feeling rushed.

This was an unforgettable experience filled with laughter and many new experiences. The group bonded instantly and all encouraged eachother along. The fat biking and kicksledding were hard but everyone went at their own pace and you could choose to do just 1 or 2 loops of the track. The snoeshoeing was incredible, it felt like we were in the wilderness. I think we all spent some time falling over but that all adds to the fun. The sauna experiences were both very different but equally as enjoyable. Tallin itself is a beautiful city so you might want an extra day to explore. There is also a ferry that takes you to Helsinki in 2 hours. Accommodation in Tallin is basic. I seemed to luck out both nights but others had poorer experiences. The spa hotel is lovely. Our guides Anton and Jane were brilliant, they bought so much knowledge and fun to the tour. Its a must book!

I absolutely loved this trip. I have been looking for a company that organises adventure travel with others . . . and it looks like I have found it!! This trip was well organised, varied and great fun. The itinerary was full, the hosts (Anton and Jane) were absolutely brilliant and the activities were great and included so many different things giving us a very comprehensive picture of Estonia in a very short time.

A stunning trip, with a variety of activities. Very cold, go prepared if travelling in feb 🥶 a beautiful country. We have the most wonderful guides in Anton and Jane 🥰, they sure made the whole trip perfect. The country spa and location was perfect way to see Estonia. The hotel on night 1 and 4 could have been better for the cost of the trip, that’s the only thing stopping it being a five star for me and more detail on the food provided in advance.

Awesome trip. Really great group of people. Beautiful place. Anton and Cristel were amazing guides - perfect combination of fun activities, interesting insights to Estonia and the culture, lots to do and a bit of downtime. The activities were well organised, particularly enjoyed the lantern walk to the beach…stunning! Would definitely recommend the trip!

My boyfriend and I took part in this trip over New Year - we had a fantastic time! Our host Anton was very personable & knowledgable. We were super lucky with the weather and had plenty of snow whilst we were away (something we were a bit worried about based on previous reviews) and the scenery & views were beautiful in the snow. The itinerary changed a little bit based on the weather, however we were able to take part in all activities during the course of the trip. Accommodation was clean & comfortable and there was plenty of food provided.
  • Wonderful Winter Break

    Chloe J. January 2026
A brilliant festive trip in the snow. It was a great chance to try winter sports beyond downhill skiing. I’d have loved a longer cross-country session, but the extra sauna time more than made up for it. The lantern-lit walk along the icy beach at night was totally unique. The smoke sauna was the highlight for me, with the New Year’s Day cold plunge a close second. Also, Tallinn Town Square on New Year’s Eve is well worth it.
  • Snow, snow, snow and saunas

    Rebecca H. January 2026
Fantastic 4 days spent in Estonia.   Our hosts Anton and Cristel were great and provided a lovely insight into Estonian history, culture, and traditions.   We had a big group, 14 in total, but they managed with ease and kept us all on track. We were very lucky with the weather and had a big dump on snow just before we arrived and then more snow while we were there. Although it was too cold (-14oC) to go fat biking on one day, the programme was quickly adapted and went cross country skiing instead. Which was much harder than I thought it would be! On the last day we had we got the opportunity to try biking and kick sledding. I went for the fat biking first, which was great fun once you got the hang of it. Different size bikes were available and me being more vertically challenged at 154cm had no trouble. I could have tried kick sledding afterwards, but I was ready for a hot chocolate and rest by the open fire. For me, the highlight of the trip was the night lantern walk through the forest to the frozen beach. With an almost full moon, it was a truly magical experience and one I won't forget. Massive thank you to Anton and Cristel for making my first MBA trip so wonderful.
  • Good trip in a beautiful country.

    Kathryn F. January 2026
Good trip, lots of fun. Great guides. Tallinn and the national park are beautiful. We were lucky with the weather as lots of snow. Activities were fun but unfortunately not very long, and less time spent on them than the itinerary suggests, so the trip definitely deserves its easy rating. The activities are all at busy activity centres so don't expect to be out in the Estonian wilderness at all! On reflection it also seems quite expensive for just 4 nights and 3 days of activities. If you want a very relaxing trip with taster activities then it's probably a good trip for you!

  • The itinerary sounded incredible and

    Alison T. December 2025
The itinerary sounded incredible and we were excited for the snow and sauna. Unfortunately there was no snow and the alternative itinerary seemed to be decided last minute with no clear plan to the group until the day. The fat biking through the forest was fun, igloo sauna and lake dip great. Bog walking with snow shoes was ok but was not a long walk. A walk with huskies through a beautiful forest was also lovely. There seemed to be long drives each day with not so long on the activities as I though there would be. We also drove a long way to the spa hotel but didn't have much time there. The last morning we had half hour only for breakfast so felt a bit rushed.

Weather conditions led to a modified itinerary as no snow for our departure date. Unfortunately we had a very inexperienced guide who struggled with planning, time management and alternatives. Consequently replacement activities were significantly different from the itinerary e. g. a 8km snow shoe walk was replaced with a 2. 5km forest and bog walk. Estonia is an interesting and beautiful country but I have reservations on the quality assurance MBA seeks for guides leading their trips given this experience. Compared with other trips this was comparatively expensive for 3 days of activities. I would recommend the Slovakian tatras mountains trip instead which was excellent. As always on mba trips the dynamic of the group was excellent and a pleasure to spend time with fellow travellers.
  • Fun week with a great group

    Nancy W. March 2025
A really enjoyable week with a perfect mix of very varied, fun activities and a good amount of down time to relax/kick back in a sauna. Would recommend.
  • Snow place like Estonia

    Alison H. March 2025
Fantastic mix of activities I've never tried before and chill time, or rather sweat time in various types of saunas. Even the uninformative city tour of Tallinn was a good time. We saw the oldest working clock in the world. . . if it had been working. Mind blown! Only improvement would be greater clarity of the itinerary, particularly day 1 as we weren't sure where we were going and when. But maybe that only added to the sense of adventuring into the unknown.
  • Winter activities in Estonia

    Tasha W. March 2025
Joined a great group in Estonia for 5 days of Snow and Sauna. . . Although the weather was unusually warm for the time of year and the snow wasn't as plentiful as hoped. Our guide Tiit was very knowledgeable and supported the activities we did and adapted to the conditions we had for kick sledding, Snoe- shoeing and fat biking. Accomodation was clean with a good shower and the food included was okay. . . Continental breakfast and local fare for the lunches and dinner. Having been on a couple of other MBA trips before I felt the cost of this one was quite high in relation to what was included and how much I felt the trip was worth but overall was a good way to see some of Estonia and to meet some lovely people with outdoor activities
  • Fantastic Trip

    Jamie M. March 2025
Really enjoyed this trip. The Kicksledding was great fun. Couldn't quite do Snowshoeing, because there was little snow. But we had "Bogshoeing" instead, which was probably just as much fun. The Fatbiking was the biggest challenge here due to the Ice. Think I fell over at least 20 times. Loved the saunas, they were quite relaxing once you get used to the heat. Tiit was a fantastic guide, very knowledgeable with the places we visited and gave us a nice Tea/Coffee break while Kicksledding and Fatbiking.
  • Great trip just little disappointments

    Hannah J. March 2025
Really great well organised trip, great company great guides. Very knowledgable. Disappointing that 5 out of 6 ladies on the trip were unable to participate in fat wheel biking due to the bikes being to large and men style frames made it unmanageable unless you had height on your side. No other option offered while rest of the group went off on the bikes.
  • An Absolute Blast in Estonia!

    Roxana-Andreea P. February 2025
This trip was everything I hoped for and more! Cross-country skiing with Carolin was hands down my favorite part—she was patient, encouraging, and somehow made me believe I was improving (even if my technique was more “Bambi on ice” than Olympic skier). I had an absolute blast! The snowshoeing was great, but just as I was getting into it, it was over! I could have easily spent another hour or two stomping through the snowy landscapes. And the saunas? Incredible. Each one was unique, but the smoked sauna was next level— with the most stunning view of the snow-covered wilderness. Pure magic. The manor was so beautiful! My only regret is that we didn’t stay longer there! I could have easily stayed a week more 😆. Overall, the trip was good organized, packed with fun, and full of great people. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. Just maybe with slightly better balance next time.
  • Excellent Winter Break

    Laura B. January 2025
This trip to Estonia was excellent. The mix of winter activities and sauna was perfect for a break where you want to get out into nature and switch off. Our guide, Tõnis, was excellent and he had great knowledge of the environment and wildlife in the area. He made sure the group felt relaxed and had fun. I would highly recommend this trip.
  • Extreme Spa!

    Chris M. January 2025
Our small group had a great time recently in Estonia. There was a lot of snow and the temperatures got well below zero but our activities went ahead and both Tallinn town and the national park looked beautiful. Our local guides were great company and we really felt that we had got a little under the skin of the country. The sauna was hotter - and smokier - than expected but the dip in the icy pond afterwards was just as cold as expected. The ‘human soup’ was by contrast just right! All experienced in a very authentic old Estonian Inn - in a blizzard! An unforgettable experience!
  • A great adventure!

    Sarah B. January 2025
A great balance of snowy activities in the morning and saunas/ice dipping in the evening with lots of tasty food! A really enjoyable experience and a great tour guide Tiit!
  • Lovely trip on a beautiful place

    Katherine F. January 2025
Estonia is stunning! The countryside is beautiful and pretty empty as there is such a low population and few tourists! There was a slight issue with there not being enough equipment for all of the group on one day (fat tyre biking - 3 people had to use normal mountain bikes and one person refused to use a normal mountain bike so didn’t get to ride at all). The saunas and cold water dipping was the BEST - got to see all 3 types of saunas - modern hotel sauna, lakeside sauna and old style traditional smoke sauna. This was an incredible experience. The spa hotel was beautiful.

The sauna tradition is an important part of the country's identity – in many ways, life in Estonia revolves around the sauna. Although sauna may seem like a winter activity, Estonians actually go all year round – family gatherings and birthdays are often celebrated with sauna.

The steam generated by pouring water onto hot rocks in a sauna is believed to have many benefits: it cleanses the skin and increases heart rate, and the heat does its magic by expanding your bronchi and relaxing the joints. The ritual also includes light 'whisking' with birch branches, which acts like a massage.

After you heat up, it's time to cool down. Saunas are often built next to the sea, a river, a lake, or a pond so that during winter, brave sauna-goers will cut a hole in the ice before taking a dip or even rolling around in the snow. The rapid temperature change stimulates blood flow and strengthens the immune system. If that sounds too bracing, you can stand in the cold air outside the sauna while enjoying a cool drink.

Two private group sauna sessions are booked on Days 2 and 4 of the trip. The first will take place in the igloo saunas of Sportland Kõrvemaa, which are 100% hand- crafted and covered with spruce chips from the outside, and aspen chips from the inside. The heat is equally distributed, which makes the sauna nicely humid. The sauna comes with a steam room, a spacious anteroom, and a toilet and shower room so you can alternate time in the heat with socialising in the common room and even an ice dip outside.

On Day 4 you'll get the chance to try an authentic smoke sauna. Like a traditional sauna, the Estonian smoke sauna usually consists of a small house heated with wood in a brick oven. However, the smoke sauna has no chimney through which the smoke can escape. Instead, it circulates inside the room while the sauna is heating. In 2014, UNESCO included the smoke sauna phenomenon in its Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The smoke sauna ritual consists of many stages which must be followed carefully. You'll enter the sacred hot room, where you are met by the heady aroma of burning wood. You'll then rub yourself with ground plants and salt, followed by the 'whisking', gently beating your body with birch branches to exfoliate skin and stimulate circulation. Then, you'll plunge into the icy waters nearby to cool down, rinse off and feel new again!

Other sauna sessions can be booked for free at the luxurious sauna centre of the Vihula Manor Hotel & Spa.

The bikes used on this trip are all Bottecchia Senales 26” Fat Bikes.

The tap water in Estonia is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels to avoid buying single use plastic bottles.

Yes, you can leave your luggage in Tallinn or with your host on Day 1, as you'll be returning there for the last night of your trip.

Overall, the choice of the route, distance and activity duration is always decided by your local guide taking into consideration group's fitness and weather conditions, so small alterations may take place with your safety in mind. In case the snow conditions on a certain day are not ideal for the scheduled activity (i.e. terrain is too icy for fat biking, snow too soft for kicksledding, etc), your host will offer alternative suitable activities locally, whenever possible, or may suggest to carry these out in alternative areas nearby. One of the alternatives may be cross country skiing so you are advised to ensure your travel insurance covers this activity.

This trip includes locations or elevations where conditions can be extremely cold. Daytime temperatures may drop below freezing (0°C/32°F), and nights are often significantly colder. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of exposure-related issues, such as frostbite or hypothermia.

Your guide is trained to manage these risks, adapting activity intensity and monitoring group wellbeing. However, it's important to take personal responsibility – bringing the right cold-weather gear (see Kit List), staying hydrated and well-nourished, and recognising early signs of cold stress.

We recommend assessing your personal comfort and resilience in cold environments, and consulting a medical professional if you have health conditions that may be affected. Arriving early can also help you acclimatise to the colder conditions, especially if you're coming from a much warmer climate.

Winter in Estonia lasts from late November until late March, with temperatures ranging from mild (above freezing) to as low as -30°C, although temperatures just below 0°C are far more common. Snow usually falls as early as late November but it is most common in the months of December to March, when this trip runs.

Mother Nature is unpredictable so snow can never be 100% guaranteed on every departure. However, recent reports show a very high chance of snow between the months of December and March. Winter hiking and fat biking without snow will be equally spectacular and enjoyable, and your hosts will do their best to suggest the best alternative activities according to the local weather conditions in this situation.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 189kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
