Following quiet country lanes, pedal through rural communities and witness village life as you spot farmers working in their rice fields and kids walking to school. Out of the saddle, get ready to climb Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock. This majestic 5th-century fortress is Sri Lanka's most iconic UNESCO-listed landmark. This afternoon, rest your legs as you drive to remote Gal Oya, the most untouched of all of Sri Lanka’s wildlife sanctuaries. Take a refreshing dip in a cool stream, a welcome respite from the tropical heat, before enjoying a traditional meal cooked on-site by members of the community. Explore the animals’ habitats, and with a little luck you may spot elephants feeding or bathing at the lake shore. Later in the day, you'll be driven to Kandy to check in at Polwaththa Eco-Lodge. Secluded in a pristine environment, this gives you a unique experience of life in the jungle. Both nature and the local community are at the heart of operations here, promoting authentic experiences and responsible tourism. Fuel up on breakfast then set off on a hike, beginning from Kandyan forest gardens where villagers go about their daily chores. Depending on the season, you may be invited to visit their houses and see how they make treacle and jaggery (sugar blocks made from palm tree nectar). Walk amidst scented fruit trees and spice plants and end the trek with a picnic lunch and refreshing dip in the jungle waterfalls. Back at your lodge, relax for a few tranquil hours before tucking in an authentic Sri Lankan dinner, cooked in clay pots and served with a smile.

An early morning transfer will take you to Kandy's railway station, the start point of one of the world's most epic train journeys. Sit comfortably in your coach to experience the sweeping views of lush tea plantations, rolling hills, dramatic viaducts, verdant valleys and dense jungle – giving a smile to locals along the way. Historically, the train was used during colonial times to transport tea from the plantations to Colombo, but these days it’s used mainly by local commuters – as well as travellers, of course. Your host will book the best train class and time available, but it is not possible to block-book seats for groups in advance (in the unlikely event that there is no availability, you will travel by road instead). The total journey time is around 4-5 hours, so you'll have plenty of time to take in the colourful panoramas. Jump off at Nuwara Eliya, the very heart of Sri Lanka's tea country, to visit one of the oldest and most renowned tea factories. Learn about the tea-making process and taste some of the finest brew in the world, before bedding down early to prepare for a remote trekking adventure ahead.

Head to Horton Plains National Park and venture into Sri Lanka’s highest and most isolated plateau, hidden away in the Central Highlands. At an elevation of 2100m-2300m, this protected area is covered by montane grassland and cloud forest which is rich in endemic plants, insects and birds. Large herds of Sri Lankan sambar deer as well as elusive leopards are also occasionally spotted. Contemplate the scenic views from the 'World's End' viewpoint – a sheer drop of 1050m – before hiking a sizeable section of the Pekoe Trail, Sri Lanka's newly launched long-distance trekking route, with plenty of stops to enjoy this unique natural environment. Descend via the famous Devil's Staircase as enjoy the views from the highest tea plantations in Sri Lanka. Your base tonight is a local guesthouse, a simple accommodation surrounded only by mountains, waterfalls and untouched greenery, totally cut off from any town by about 1hr drive or 3hr walk.

Next, zig-zag through an incredibly diverse landscape ranging from pine and eucalyptus forests, misty tea estates, leafy valleys and dense jungle trails. If you are lucky you may even spot some rare wildlife such as toque macaques, purple-faced langurs, Sri Lankan spotted chevrotain, or grizzled giant squirrels. With your trek over, relax into a four-hour drive south towards Talalla, Sri Lanka’s most peaceful protected beach and the gateway to a pristine cove of turquoise water fringed by lush jungle. Kick back into beach life on the golden sand, catch a sunset and enjoy a few drinks and dinner by the ocean.

Food and Dietary info

Sri Lankan cuisine is a fascinating reflection of the island’s heritage: a fusion of fresh local produce with spices brought to the island over the centuries. Though Sri Lankan food has some similarities with the South Indian cuisine, it remains distinctively unique. Contrasting flavours of coconut, chilli, curry leaves, cinnamon and garlic are dominant in the main dishes as well as the variety of deep fried tasty snacks. 'Rice and curry' is the Sri Lankan staple, which in reality means a huge variety of curries, dhal and vegetable dishes, often served with roti style flatbreads. There is also an abundance of fresh seafood and fish, usually cooked in curries with coconut and fresh herbs.

Vegetarians and vegan are well catered for along with most dietary requirements, just speak to your host upon booking.

Trip level explained

Level 2

Easy-Moderate

This trip is designed for those of average to good fitness, but none of the activities are hugely strenuous.

No previous yoga or surfing experience is needed, as these activities will be also tailored to first-timers. You also don't need to be an experienced hiker, although you should be able to trek for up to 6 hours across uneven terrain or dense jungle. You should also feel comfortable riding a bike for a couple of hours along flat ground. You need only carry a small day rucksack with any personal belongings, water, snacks, suncream etc. Please note that the climb up to Sigiriya does involve some sections of steel stairs and metal staircases clinging on the exposed side to the rock.

There are a few long drives (up to 4 hours) and a long train journey (4-5 hours) but these will be a great chance to rest your legs while taking in dazzling views of Sri Lanka along the way. There are several early starts in order to avoid the heat and maximise the wildlife-spotting opportunities, so a sense of adventure and willingness here is key to enjoying the experience. However, there is also some leisure time built into the trip so you can fully enjoy the serene environment as you wish – reading by the pool, taking optional walks into local villages and slowing down to the pace of nature.

What if i need to skip an activity?

If you've never tried surfing or yoga, we recommend giving these a go, as tuition will be tailored to first-timers. However, we appreciate that yoga and surfing are not for everyone so if you prefer to opt-out from these activities, it's absolutely fine – you can just enjoy some extra leisure time in the jungle or on the tropical beaches.

What will I need to carry?

During the activities, you'll only need to carry a personal day rucksack with your essential items. Your main luggage will be transported or stored for you.

Climate Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely high during the times of year when this trip operates. High humidity and limited access to shade can also be factors, and warm temperatures can continue into the nighttime, which additionally influence the body’s ability to cool down. Personal care should be taken to keep as cool as possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration. Very high temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at cooler temperatures. People may experience symptoms associated with dehydration and Heat Stroke. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

Great trip around Sri Lanka with a really nice bunch and knowledgable guide, Laki, I would definitely recommend it to those who like the mix of activities offered. A few observations which might help people decide: - Sri Lankans are super nice and welcoming, they contribute massively to making this tour hassle free, we were looked after really well. - Of course it depends on the individual fitness level but I didn't feel like the hikes were too strenuous, it is the heat and the humidity which make some of the days harder. - It is also very individual and maybe my expectations were well managed but I was pretty happy with the accommodation throughout the trip. Some of them were better, whilst others somewhat more rustic but you probably don't sign up for a trip to Sri Lanka expecting 5* hotels anyway. - There are quite a few early morning starts to beat the heat so it's for the right reasons. Transfers are also long but they also offer downtime and the bus is really comfy. - I would have appreciated a bit more immersion, a couple of opportunities where you can just head out for a couple of hours and explore things yourself. - I was a bit conscious about bugs in advance of travelling but I always felt comfortable. Probably a mindset thing again, you're going to Sri Lanka. - Some of the local guides we had were amazing. And a few tips for packing: - It's advisable to bring hiking boots for ankle support due to the uneven terrain. - A water bladder is handy as some days you need about 3 litres of water. There's always enough clean, purified water available. - There are loads of stops where you can buy Western snacks, no need to bring everything from home. - There's an opportunity to do the laundry halfway through the trip.

Loved the experience. Lots of memories made. Would recommend this tour.

The trip totally surpassed expectations. We had two wonderful tour guides Laki and Ascot who were so knowledgeable about the island and the culture. They were also great fun to be with and made the trip as special as it was. We were lucky with our group as everyone got on really well and it felt like a big family towards the end. The trip itself covered was varied and incredibly interesting. We saw parts of Sri Lanka that I would never have seen if I've done this on my own and I learned so much about the people and the country. The food was excellent and the accommodation was all really good. . There were some long bus journeys involved, but this was balanced out by quite a few days of long hiking as well. I would recommend bringing lightweight walking with ankle Support, mosquito repellent, and a water bladder if you have one. I would also recommend bringing very lightweight clothing as it is incredibly hot. You will need a fleece for when you stay in the Highlands for one night . Other than that we did not need any warm gear In a nutshell if you want a trip that gives you Sri Lanka in 10 days seeing parts of the country that you may not see otherwise then please do this trip. It was totally amazing.

  • Nicola B.

The itinerary for this trip felt well balanced and I enjoyed all of the activities, each offering a different experience of this beautiful country. The change to the train ride worked well, with Laki, our guide, weaving in a quick stop in Kandy which was a bonus. Laki and each of the specialist local guides were extremely knowledgeable and everyone involved in delivering the trip were really friendly.

An incredible trip through Sri Lanka with a standout itinerary of hiking, cycling, yoga, and surfing. The service throughout was fantastic from hosts and local guides with all being very accommodating to me being vegan (no issues with food whatsoever). I’ve given a four-star rating due to some of the poor accommodation used throughout the trip. Our hotel in Negombo had stained sheets and curtains, and the air con wasn’t working. The wing we stayed in also appeared to be shared with staff. In Kandy, the hotel was quite unclean, with sections of wall missing that allowed insects to enter freely. While there had been an attempt to cover these gaps with picture frames, it didn’t prevent bugs from coming through. I was also bitten by something under the sheets there, which broke the skin and left me bleeding. At our final stop in Talalla, we were allocated rooms without air con (only fans). We arrived at 6pm and the outside temp was 31 degrees. The rooms ended up being hotter than the outside temp which made for a very uncomfortable stay. That said, the accommodation in Habarana, Gal Oya and Nuwara Eliya was exceptional. The stay in Ohiya during the Pekoe Trail hike was more basic, but still very comfortable and well-suited to the experience. For future travellers, I’d strongly recommend bringing proper hiking boots and a water bladder, as there are several long hiking days over uneven terrain.

Sri Lanka is incredible and this trip really showed of the incredible landscape and natural treasures it has to offer.

  • anchick

Whilst the tour was good in the sense that everything was organised for you, there were definitely parts of it that could be improved. Utilising the time on the bus between locations to give the history of the region and any information of flora and fauna and want to expect.

Excellent tour. Our guide Laki was very knowledgable, organised and kind. Perfect mix of adventure and culture. Would highly recommend!

  • Sarah L.

Had a fantastic trip to Sri Lanka, with so much packed into every day. Some days were quite long or had a lot of travel time, but it was completely worth it to see some parts which are more off the beaten track and variation in the landscapes and people. Our guide was super friendly, knowledgeable, and adapted well to our group dynamic. Would highly recommend this trip.

  • Loved the experience. Lots of

Loved the experience. Lots of memories made. Would recommend this tour.
  • Totally fabulous

    Helen K. April 2026
  • Excellent tour

    Nicola B. April 2026
  • The Ultimate Adventure Through Sri Lanka

    Amelia N. April 2026
  • Excellent trip

    Katie W. April 2026
Sri Lanka is incredible and this trip really showed of the incredible landscape and natural treasures it has to offer.
  • Whilst the tour was good

    anchick April 2026
Whilst the tour was good in the sense that everything was organised for you, there were definitely parts of it that could be improved. Utilising the time on the bus between locations to give the history of the region and any information of flora and fauna and want to expect.
  • Beyond incredible experience and mix of activities

    Suzanne P. April 2026
My 4th MBA and best to date! Such a unique mix of experiences from jungle hikes with a tribe leader 🥾 to surfing :woman-surfing:, elephants 🐘, hanging out of trains 🚂, tea picking ☕️, yoga 🧘‍:female_sign:, cycling 🚴🏼‍:female_sign:, UNESCO sites 🛖 and an amazing group!
  • Excellent tour. Our guide Laki

    Deborah G. April 2026
Excellent tour. Our guide Laki was very knowledgable, organised and kind. Perfect mix of adventure and culture. Would highly recommend!
  • Varied landscapes

    Sarah L. March 2026
  • Epic journey through a country that surprises at every turn

    James L. March 2026
This was an incredible trip sampling just some of what Sri Lanka has to offer. Laki, our guide, was warm, welcoming, unbelievably knowledgeable, and great fun - nothing was too much for him and the other guides, even fitting in a bonus evening out to the cricket. As always with these sorts of trips, some early mornings and long bus journeys are in order, well worth it considering the incredible places you are visiting. These are often off the beaten track, or you at least get in before they get too busy (or hot!). Our group faced some hardship due to flights home via the Middle East being cancelled, despite that morale stayed high and we had a lot of fun, feeling like family by the end. The accommodation is always interesting but some can seem basic by Western standards, I would suggest you check beforehand to make sure it is for you :) Otherwise if you're thinking about this trip, don't hesitate! Book now and prepare for a much better adventure
  • Fabulous trip

    Nichola M. March 2026
Fabulous whistle stop trip of Sri Lanka. Laki (our amazing guide) was extremely knowledgeable, patient and flexible with us. Loved the walks, felt like we were off the beaten track, especially with the Vedda tribe. Some really great experiences with a fantastic group. You do spend quite a bit of time on the bus, which I knew before, but some may find that off putting.
  • A Fabulous Trip to Sri Lanka.

    Clare M. March 2026
This was my first trip with MBA and it exceeded my expectations in all respects. From the itinerary, accommodation and guides (Lakshitha was outstanding) to the food, fun and enjoying the experiences shared likeminded travellers. Expect early starts, busy days and a few long bus rides in this packed tour. Just book it!
  • What an adventure!

    Beth F. February 2026
Such a fabulous trip exploring a beautiful country. INCREDIBLE guide (Laki) who could not do enough for us as a group - super knowledgeable, passionate about the country and fun, thank you so much to him and our great driving team. The trip also uses great local guides who support some of the different activities. Accommodation was amazing and exceeded my expectations, food also amazing! Be prepared for some early starts and a few long-ish drives, but all part of exploring this beautiful country. Highly recommend!

Our guide Laki went above and beyond while sharing his expert knowledge of this beautiful country. The food, accomodation, scenery and hikes were incredible. We would absolutely recommend this tour.
  • Trip of a lifetime!

    Claire L. February 2026
A trip I’ll never forget, made by our guide Laki, who showed us places and gave us access to parts of his country that we otherwise would not have seen. Our group were great company and included us, even though we were over 10 years older, and we have come away feeling as if we have made true friends. The trip challenged, stretched, moved and delighted me - would not hesitate to recommend to anyone with a sense of adventure and a desire to truly experience this lovely country.

  • Sri Lanka Adventure

    Jane F. February 2026
This was my first time with MBA and my first tome on Sri Lanka. It was an unforgettable experience. Impossible to experience Sri Lanka in 10 days but the itinerary was a brilliant mix and the guides did an amazing job and went above and beyond to show us and allow us to experience the beauty and heart of Sri Lanka.
  • The adventure of a lifetime through Sri Lanka

    Irene P. February 2026
An absolutely unforgettable adventure in Sri Lanka! From breathtaking hikes through lush jungles, forests, tea plantations, and wetlands to incredible wildlife encounters with elephants and vibrant birdlife, every day felt magical. The cultural experiences with local and indigenous communities were deeply enriching, and the food was consistently delicious—with all dietary needs and preferences thoughtfully catered for. And as if hiking wasn't enough we had a great time cycling, surfing and relaxing with some yoga. Huge thanks to our amazing, patient and kind guide Laki (plus Ramesh), the wonderful drivers, and the entire MBA crew for their warmth, professionalism, and care. Truly the adventure of a lifetime and one I won't forget —thank you!
  • Brilliant trip in beautiful Sri Lanka

    Laura h. January 2026
Wow what a superb adventure! So impressed with this trip and itinerary. Lakhi was our fantastic guide leading the trip, always making sure the group was well looked after. His knowledge of Sri Lankan wildlife and history was fantastic and really sets this trip apart. We saw wild elephants, langurs and a number of rare bird and reptile species as we hiked across various national parks. Gorgeous accommodation and delicious food. I really enjoyed the yoga and cycling - and now can surf waves too! I felt safe and the drivers Lesley and Kummar were added support - always on hand to look after us. It was nice to be able to relax and have everything planned for us. We had a really fun group who got on so well. Lots of laughs and games. Highly recommend this trip.
  • Just do it!

    Sophie P. January 2026
This tour was an amazing way to experience a wide range of the landscapes and activities that Sri Lanka has to offer. Laki our guide was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge about Sri Lanka and went above and beyond to ensure that everyone had an incredible time. Our group got on really well and we had so much fun - particularly playing silly games at the mountain hut on the Pekoe trail. Highlights included the view from Pidurangala Rock, swimming at the awesome pool at the Gal Oya glamping, fresh roti by a river in the forest, an amazing lunch in a local village at the end of the knuckles hike, having a go at picking tea, and the surf lesson.
  • Fantastic trip. Amazing memories

    Susan C. January 2026
We started our tour on 31/12/2025 and I am so happy with how it went. Our family had the best time and the group was such great fun. The guide ( Lakhi) and drivers ( Leslie and Kumar) were always smiling, knowledgeable and the tour went without any hitches. Each place we visited felt special and we had so many incredible experiences. The hiking was beautiful and varied. We felt truly immersed in Sri Lanka. The breakfast with the elephants was an absolute highlight but the other days were always filled with beauty and laughter. The leech socks are hilarious but absolutely necessary. I would absolutely recommend this trip and MBA to anyone thinking of visiting Sri Lanka.

  • Incredible Trip!

    lois a. January 2026
I had the most incredible time travelling around Sri Lanka — truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Our guide, Laki, was outstanding, and our two wonderful drivers, Lesly and Kumar, went above and beyond to make the trip smooth, safe and unforgettable. Even though a cyclone hit less than a week before we arrived, we still managed to do almost everything on the itinerary and even more than expected. The organisation and flexibility were exceptional. I completely fell in love with Sri Lanka — the breathtaking landscapes, the hiking, the beautiful places we stayed, and above all, the warmth and kindness of the people. I also feel incredibly lucky to have made such amazing friends along the way. I will absolutely be booking another trip with MBA and cannot wait to return to this incredible country. Highly recommended — 5 stars without hesitation!
  • Awe-inspiring

    Simone S. January 2026
What an incredible trip this has been! I loved every second of exploring the beauty of this special country. The trails away from the beaten tourist paths were so well chosen. I couldn't have wished for a better first visit.
  • Great potential, average execution

    Natalia W. January 2026
The nature, remoteness of the itinerary and the sites were fantastic. The guide was very knowledgeable and the driver good. That being said, we often barely slept due to suboptimal accomodations (surprising given the price of the trip ), the bus was extremely uncomfortable and overall leadership was chaotic and often unnecessarily stressful.
  • Not the planned itinerary due to the cyclone

    Treena S. December 2025
Lackie did a great job trying to give us adventures despite the cyclone impeding the initial planned itinerary. Hugely disappointed we couldn’t do 2 of the activities on the itinerary, as they were in the top 3 highlights of the itinerary for me - of course, understand it wasn’t safe to do so & people had lost their lives in the cyclone. Very grateful Lackie still got us to enjoy the glamping & hike with the Vedda people - was definitely a highlight; and glad we got to have a little taste of the Pekoe Trail. The modified bit of a 12 hr jeep safari was also a highlight - a long day, but we saw so many birds, elephants, and even a sloth bear and leopard! Overall, hugely disappointed we couldn’t do as much hiking as planned and that other traveller spoilt some parts, but Lackie made lemonade out of lemons for us to the best of his ability and we still managed to have some amazing experiences.
  • Despite there being a tropical

    Kathryn H. December 2025
Despite there being a tropical cyclone during our trip our guide made sure we still had a good trip and kept as safe. The trip didn't run quite to the itinerary but we got to do a lot of activities that we were not expecting; a full day safari, an evening boat safari and a trip to the cave temple.

FAQs

Marta Marinelli, raised in Italy’s serene Prosecco Hills, dreamt of global adventures, inspired by her father's travel stories. Her passion evolved into a career, backed by a decade of studies including degrees in international tourism and destination management. She’s worked in the adventure travel sector since 2012, living in Italy, the UK, and now sunny Portugal.

Over twenty years, Marta has explored over 55 countries, visiting remote areas like Ghana, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Haiti and Nepal’s Upper Mustang region. As a Senior Adventure Expansion Manager at Much Better Adventures, she focuses on creating life-changing experiences, ranging from multi-activity adventures, challenging treks to ultimate adventures in iconic places. She loves the challenge of finding the best local adventure hosts around the world, collaborating on adventures that offer genuine immersion, pushing beyond the beaten path and working on exclusive itineraries that challenge your comfort zone.

What makes her tick? Enabling people to live adventure-rich lives while positively impacting and empowering local communities around the world, generating sustainable opportunities for both the host, guides, community, and the environment.

On the trip you'll spend a day with the Veddas, the last indigenous people in Sri Lanka. Many Veddas nowadays have ventured into agriculture so traditional hunting is fading away, but the Veddas you'll meet still live following authentic traditions. Through this cultural exchange, you'll be playing an active part in the maintenance of indigenous culture through its celebration.

You'll also visit remote rural villages – a fantastic opportunity to learn about local culture, history, and the adaptation of remote communities to contemporary life.

We have selected a number of extraordinary accommodation providers who practise responsible tourism in the true sense of the word. Here, food is locally sourced, construction materials are mostly natural and have been chosen to respect the environment. Local operations are also managed by the communities themselves, a successful example of how community-based tourism can be beneficial when done sensitively.

If you wish to extend your Sri Lanka beach stay, we recommend adding extra nights at the Talalla Retreat – the ideal place to learn surfing or practice yoga (please see the Optional Extras for more info). The hotel also offers complete yoga and surf packages on request (check their website for further info). Alternatively, you can take advantage of the short direct flights from Colombo, and head out to the Maldives – see our alternative trip, The Ultimate Adventure in Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

The tap water in Sri Lanka is not always friendly on the stomach. You may find purified water in some of the accommodation which you can use to fill up each morning, so be sure to pack a reusable water bottle or two. To avoid plastic waste where filtered water is not available, we suggest bringing water purification tablets (or an alternative purification system) for extra safety.

Your main luggage will be stored securely on the bus when you're on the move and you'll have access to it on a daily basis except for one night during the Pekoe Trail. If there's anything that you don't need with you during the tour you can also store excess luggage at your local host's office in Colombo. During the activities, you'll only need to carry a personal day rucksack with your essential items.

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme highs, where limited shade and high humidity can also be a factor. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but hydration, proper clothing, and sun protection are essential.

Before travelling, consider your ability to be active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have concerns – especially if you have any cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two prior to the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

It may sound clichéd, but Sri Lanka is a year-round destination – although December to mid-April is considered to be peak season and will be a bit busier as a result.

Temperatures are fairly constant, with coastal regions enjoying average temperatures of 25-30°C, and the highlands 15-18°C. As this trip covers a lot of ground, it also straddles what have been considered different monsoon seasons (four, depending on which region you travel in). This means that throughout the year you are likely to encounter plenty of sunshine, some short, sharp downpours, fairly high humidity and plenty of blue skies, regardless of whether it has traditionally been called 'monsoon' or not. These categorisations are proving harder to predict, so an open mind and expecting every type of weather is a must! Rainproof gear is strongly recommended at any time of year.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 494kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
