Detailed Logistics

Transfers

You'll be picked up at Podgorica Airport at 11:00 on Day 1, so make sure you book a flight which arrives in plenty time for the meet up. If you are already in Podgorica prior to Day 1, a pick up from a central city location can be arranged but only if requested in advance of travel – just contact your host to request this.

Your trip ends in Podgorica and on Day 5 you'll be dropped off at Podgorica Airport on a group departure transfer in the morning in time for your flight. For those needing transportation to different locations (such as car rental pickup) or at other times/days, taxis between Podgorica city centre and the airport can easily be arranged locally at your own expense for a cost of approximately €10-12.

If you decide to extend your trip in Žabljak and therefore need to transfer to/from there independently, you can opt to travel by bus (fares from €12 per person) or by taxi (approximately €130 per journey).

Travel options

There are regular direct flights to Podgorica from London and Manchester (with Wizzair and Ryanair) as well as from the rest of Europe.

Alternatively, you may choose to fly in and out to Tivat on the coast of Montenegro (Tivat offers direct connections with other regional airports in the UK, such as Birmingham, as well as the rest of Europe). If you use this airport, you can ask your host to provide you with the details of a trusted transfer company who can deliver you to either Podgorica or Durmitor National Park to join the rest of your group. A Tivat to Durmitor transfer costs €180 and takes three and a half hours; the shorter Tivat to Podgorica transfer costs €60-70 and takes two hours.

Another option is to fly to Dubrovnik in Croatia, and make your own way to Podgorica. However, please be aware that during the summer season, significant queues can form at the Croatia–Montenegro border.

Whichever route you choose, please inform your host of your arrival plans well in advance in order to ensure a smooth start to your adventure.

Food and Dietary info

Start each day with a diverse continental breakfast, where cereals, bread, butter, jam, honey, cheese, eggs, bacon and a selection of teas and coffees will fuel you up for the activities. Come lunchtime, your guide will either arrange some sandwich picnics or you'll enjoy meals in local restaurants or by the activity centres. As the evening draws in, enjoy some tasty group dinners where the culinary traditions of Montenegro take the spotlight. Dishes will be hearty and served in large portions, including traditional soups, locally grown vegetables and regional dairy, meat and fish dishes. Feel free to bring along any preferred snacks, especially if you have a sweet tooth, for that extra boost of energy during the activities. Please note that drinks consumed with included lunches and dinners are at your own expense.

Whilst your host can cater for vegetarians, please be aware that it may be more difficult to cater for special diets. The meals provided for those with vegan and gluten-free diets in rural Montenegro may lack variety. For this reason, we recommend supplementing your diet with food products and snacks from home. Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

No rafting or canyoning experience is needed, just a reasonable level of fitness and the ability to handle 3-4 hours of activity each day and up to 6 hrs of hiking. Please note, you must be a confident and competent swimmer to ensure your safety during the water-based segments of this trip.

This trip is not suitable for individuals who have a fear of heights or claustrophobia, those with limited mobility, or individuals with heart or back problems. Additionally, the trip is not recommended for pregnant women or individuals with other serious medical conditions.

Nevidio Canyon is 2.7km long and in some places squeezes down to just 1.5m wide. You'll be swimming through narrow sections, jumping into pools, wading and diving your way through – however, your guide will always be on hand to help you cross every obstacle. The water is chilly in the canyon, but wetsuits, neoprene socks, appropriate footwear for canyoning, and helmets will be provided.

You'll raft a 15 km section of the Tara River, navigating through rapids of Grade 2 and 3, depending on the time of the season and the water level in the river. These rapids offer an exciting experience, providing enough thrill to satisfy the adventurous spirit while still being accessible and manageable for amateurs.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

As a family group we had a great time, the rafting was a good fun day that all ages and abilities can enjoy. The hiking was of a manageable length but probably not suitable for those who are uncomfortable with heights, recommend hiking boots as some surfaces a bit tricky. The canyoning for me was the highlight of the holiday and was a fantastic experience, you do need to be reasonably fit as it is quite a physical day especially with the hike up the canyon at the end. Just make sure you able to swim and are comfortable jumping in water from height . Our host Jelena was fantastic and as well as being a lovely person she organised the days perfectly and always with a smile on her face. . I do have a negative about the hotel Sljeme, Room 5 was above the bar and soundproofing from there and other adjoining rooms was non existent and did not enjoy the party going on downstairs until 2. 30am. Food was good but lacking in variety as same menu selection each day. Overall would highly recommend the trip to all ages .

The trip was organized and well-planned, with a nice mix of activities in a scenic region in Montenegro. Momir the guide was friendly, helpful, and clearly proud of what the country has to offer (justifiably!). The food, though generally relatively simple, was quite good which was a pleasant surprise. All in all I recommend the trip!

This trip hit the highlights of the region and made it possible to see a part of the country in ways I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to as a solo traveler. Our guide Momir was great- he made sure every detail was taken care of and shared so much knowledge with us! The way the trip is structured is a good balance of gradual increase in activity while still allowing for downtime- I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for an active adventure.

I had an incredible adventure weekend in Montenegro that exceeded all expectations. From the stunning natural beauty to the adrenaline-filled activities, every moment was memorable. What made it even more special was the amazing group of people I met, fellow travellers from around the world who quickly became friends. A huge shout out to our host, Momir, who truly went above and beyond. His energy, local knowledge, and genuine care for every person on the tour made the experience unforgettable. You could tell he loves what he does, and it showed in every detail. Highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for adventure, connection, and unforgettable memories!

This was my first group trip and it completely exceeded my expectations! The experience was the perfect mix of adventure, nature, and great company. We hiked through stunning landscapes, rafted down the Tara River and went canyoning (my absolute favourite part!). The whole trip was so well organized, with just the right balance between activity and downtime (for me). Our host, Momir, was fantastic — warm, friendly, and truly passionate about what he does. They made everyone feel comfortable and brought such a positive energy to the group. You could tell Momir genuinely cared about creating a memorable experience for everyone. Canyoning was a real highlight for me — as one my favourite activities to do anyway, being in such a stunning canyon, couple with a bit of rain and thunder created a unique and thrilling way to explore the area. Thanks for everything Momir!

Our host Momir, was very organised and friendly. Reaching out to everyone before the tour started and always quick to respond to any queries or questions. He was friendly and energetic throughout and couldn't do enough for us. The activities were well organised and and structured throughout the tour. Fabulous views and good general history and montenegrin insights throughout. The tour was rated as moderate difficulty. Our group was OK with this, however some parts are slightly more demanding than the much better adventure description implies.

  • Adventure through Montenegro

    Daanish A. July 2025
What an incredible trip! From the food to the activities to our fantastic guide, everything was top notch. Experiencing the beauty of Durmitor national park was incredibly humbling, with mighty peaks and deep canyons. The diversity of activities was excellent - it’s not every trip you’re able to jump into a canyoning adventures, with a series of fun obstacles to overcome, including sliding down waterfalls! The group dynamics were great and our guide, Ozren, was knowledgeable and absolutely brilliant! Always telling us interesting facts about the landscape, in addition to sharing knowledge about the complicated and fascinating history of the Balkans. Cannot recommend him and this trip enough!
  • Exciting way to explore the wider Montenegro

    Paul H. July 2025
A short reach into the wider country of Montenegro highlighting some of its less know and beautiful areas. The trip is physically and mentally demanding in various ways from facing you worse fears as you jump deep into the cold waters of the Canyon to climbing Prutas mountain in the warm Montenegro sun. Everything is provided the food, although very similar, is filling and plentiful. Momir was always there with a laugh, great knowledge, and love for the country he works in showed through. The hotel in Zabljak is basic but comfortable, and makes a good base for exploring, but don’t expect much of the town of Zabljek. The teams that run the events are very professional and supportive whatever your skill level, all the kit supplied was of a high standard. For climbing the mountain walking shoes are not really adequate, good strong boots would be better as there are some technical areas. To have made it five star I would have preferred to climb Bobotov Kuk to make it the full experience.
  • Another great trip with MBA

An amazing experience that we will never forget! From swimming in the black lake, to rafting and zip lining the Tara river, to climbing mountains and canyoning, Great to meet you all lads, safe travels back home. Momir, our guide went above and beyond. He is an excellent ambassador for Montenegro 🇲🇪, it’s lucky to have him flying the flag and conveying his passion to anyone who visits. Thanks for all of your help & guidance I would 100% recommend this experience.

  • Beautiful Durmitor with days of adventure

    David W. June 2025
Durmitor's landscape did not disappoint, what a beautiful area and the facilities were better than expected! The itinerary had a good mix of adventure and relaxation time to recover. The activities particularly the canyoning and hike were a little more strenuous than expected at time but I welcomed that, others without a basic level of fitness may struggle. Overall a great few days, expertly guided by Jelena who was wonderful and a good laugh!
  • Fabulous Montenegro 🤩❤️

    Alex R. June 2025
Just returned from my 1st ever solo group adventure trip. I was nervous asked lots of questions booking and HQ were fantastic in providing all the info. It was a fantastic trip so much fun with a great group of wonderful people 🙌 The activities were challenging and organised so well by our great guide Momir and Jelelna. Momirs historical knowledge, hospitality and sense of fun and adventure really made the trip for me. He looked after our every need with super food and couldn’t do enough to make our trip memorable! Thank you Momir and MBA for a wonderful and well run trip in beautiful Montenegro. I recommend highly and am already looking at booking another one!
  • Absolutely brilliant in every way!

    Anna W. June 2025
This was the most incredible 4 days in Montenegro. The country is stunning, beautiful scenery and clear waters. The people are wonderful and the food was next level good (I’m still dreaming about the fresh trout 🤤). Our guides Momir and Jelena were so fantastic, knowledgeable and kind and made the trip even better. The activities were insane - clearly I loved every second. Everyone in the group were great fun and so well matched for our interests. 10/10 recommend this adventure.

  • Super fun if not that extreme

    Callum S. November 2024
All round yet another really great MBA trip. The logistics and accommodation were perfect and whilst the food was ok at the hostel, there was at least a lot of it. The host was friendly, approachable and ‘on it’ throughout - quickly pivoting the itinerary when needing to (inevitably due to the weather…). A really good group of like-minded folks of all walks of life that got on really well and really knew their flags of the world. As others have commented, the rafting is definitely tame but that can’t be helped so far as I can see and if you want more full on rafting choose another trip.
  • Excellent adventure holiday

    Mark E. September 2024
As someone who had never gone on a dedicated active adventure holiday this was fantastic. It was organized very well and the ready transport made it really stress-free.
  • Amazing trip - highly recommend!

    Abbey J. September 2024
This was my first trip with Much Better Adventures and I will definitely look at booking another in the future. Everything was so well organised from the minute I arrived, meaning that the whole group and I could just focus on the adventure ahead. Canyoning was the highlight of the trip but I thoroughly enjoyed all of the activities. The rafting was very calm, as others have mentioned, so it was more of a nice boat trip down the river but still enjoyable. If you’re looking for bigger rapids we were told that April/May is a good time to go for that. Montenegro is a beautiful country and I would highly recommend this trip if you’d like to get away and appreciate nature for a bit whilst taking on some new adventures. The accommodation exceeded my expectations, as the chalets were lovely. The food was plentiful, with both lunch and dinner being two course meals each day, so you won’t go hungry. I’m vegan and really appreciated the hosts accommodating my dietary requirements. Shout out to Luka, who was our group’s guide and a great host, adjusting our itinerary around the weather to help make the most of our time. Overall this was an excellent trip, which covered a lot of ground in a short space of time and I would highly recommend!
  • An excellent trip…

A great break away from day to day life with rafting, hiking and canyoning. Brilliant company and our guide Momir was fab! Highly recommend. As others have said, the rafting can be a bit more sedate than expected depending on the time of year and the water levels in the river but the canyoning provided an adequate adrenaline level for myself. Was very impressed by the quality of the accommodation.

I fell in love with Montenegro on this trip. A great way to see some of the top spots in this beautiful country. A special thank you to our guide Momir who ensured we were all looked after and made the most of our time. All our hundreds of questions were answered and he really showed his knowledge and passion for what he does and his country. Hvala Momir! Top organisation from start to finish. The accommodation in both Durmitor Park and Podgorica was ideal. Meals and lunches were good, breakfast selection was excellent. The rafting was quite tame due to low water levels at this time of the season, but it was still fun and very enjoyable to see the Tara River. Guides were again great. The hike up Prutaš was simple enough but requires care and a decent fitness level. The zip line was a great way to finish the day. Canyoning was great - don't underestimate the cold and the very steep walk out of the canyon. Overall I loved the trip. I was apprehensive about being in a group before the trip but everyone was great. The banter was great and we learned tons about Montenegro along the way. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for an active way to explore Montenegro.

Our Montenegro adventure with Much Better Adventures was fantastic, and a big part of that was thanks to our guide. From the start, Momir’s care and attention made everything easy and enjoyable. He kept us all informed and organized through a WhatsApp group, and paid particular attention to ensure everyone was comfortable, especially during the activities, which were all excellent. Momir’s warmth and genuine passion for his country made us all feel welcome and added a lot to the trip. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a great adventure in Montenegro. Thanks, Momir, for an unforgettable experience!

FAQs

Marta Marinelli, raised in Italy’s serene Prosecco Hills, dreamt of global adventures, inspired by her father's travel stories. Her passion evolved into a career, backed by a decade of studies including degrees in international tourism and destination management. She’s worked in the adventure travel sector since 2012, living in Italy, the UK, and now sunny Portugal.

Over twenty years, Marta has explored over 55 countries, visiting remote areas like Ghana, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Haiti and Nepal’s Upper Mustang region. As a Senior Adventure Expansion Manager at Much Better Adventures, she focuses on creating life-changing experiences, ranging from multi-activity adventures, challenging treks to ultimate adventures in iconic places. She loves the challenge of finding the best local adventure hosts around the world, collaborating on adventures that offer genuine immersion, pushing beyond the beaten path and working on exclusive itineraries that challenge your comfort zone.

What makes her tick? Enabling people to live adventure-rich lives while positively impacting and empowering local communities around the world, generating sustainable opportunities for both the host, guides, community, and the environment.

Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. Your guide will help with advice, however your host suggests the below as a guideline:

Waiters: 10-15% of the bill Drivers: €2-€5 per person per day Skippers: €20-€25 per group per day Guides: €10-€15 per person per day Assistant Guides: €5-€10 per person per day

Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality – a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

Any excess luggage can be safely left in your mountain chalet accommodation while out on the activities. You'll only need to take and a 25-35 litre day backpack to carry what you need for the day which may include a rain jacket, fleece, t-shirts, camera, sun-cream, water and picnic lunch. On hot days you will carry fewer clothes but more drinking water.

Some shops in Žabljak do not accept cards and there is the possibility that card payments might fail due to a weak signal, so you are advised to carry some cash with you for drinks, souvenirs and the like.

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme highs, where limited shade and high humidity can also be a factor. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but hydration, proper clothing, and sun protection are essential.

Before travelling, consider your ability to be active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have concerns – especially if you have any cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two prior to the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

Montenegro enjoys over 250 sunny days annually, making it ideal for sun-lovers. Montenegro's coastal regions enjoy a Mediterranean climate, while Podgorica experiences very hot summers. In Podgorica, July and August temperatures often exceed 35°C (95°F), with long, dry days. In contrast, Durmitor National Park offers cooler summers, with daytime temperatures ranging from 18-24°C (64-75°F), sometimes reaching 28-29°C (82-84°F) on the warmest days. Evenings can see significant drops in temperature. While summer weather is generally favourable, unpredictable mountain storms are possible. Your host will prioritise safety and adjust the itinerary, if necessary, due to weather conditions.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 117kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
