    Head into the Finnish wilderness and settle into a cosy cabin nestled in the woods, where your guide will lay out the plan for the next few days. After a welcome dinner at the cabin with your fellow adventurers, you'll have a briefing on the aurora and the science behind them, learning about the unique atmospheric conditions that create this breathtaking natural phenomenon. Your guide will help you set your phones/cameras ready to capture them should they make an appearance. They will also give you tips on how to look out for the lights and how to set up an alarm to ensure that you don't miss out on any opportunities to witness them. All set and wrapped up, head out into the crisp night air to try and catch a glimpse of the magnificent aurora borealis. Your guides will bring tripods along, teaching you how to successfully photograph the northern lights.

    Today, you'll explore the breathtaking landscapes of Lapland on silent electric snowmobiles (these can comfortably accommodate two riders so you'll pair up and take it in turns to drive; remember to bring your driving licence!). Glide by the glossy expanse of a frozen lake before entering enchanting snowy forests, heading towards the Kopara Reindeer Park. There, you'll get to meet reindeers up close, gaining insights into the history and cultural traditions surrounding these gentle Arctic creatures. After lunch, hop back onto your vehicle for a scenic return to the cabins where you can warm up and enjoy the sauna before dinner. If the aurora show again tonight, you'll be able to head out for more northern lights watching.

    Clip on snowshoes and hike out into the Pyhä-Luosto National Park – a snowy wilderness of frozen valleys, ravines and tunturis, the remnants of two-billion-year-old mountains. Eyes peeled for animal tracks in the fresh snow as you go, before reaching a crackling campfire around lunchtime where you can take a break, and warm up by the flames with a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, check into your next accommodation, which will be either stunning glass-roofed aurora cabins or spacious sky view suites. Later, you'll embrace the Finnish sauna experience: feel the chill as you plunge into icy lake waters, before heating up in a traditional wood-heated sauna. If the northern lights are visible this evening, you'll be able to look straight up from your room to see them dancing across the sky. You can also gather outside with your fellow travellers to share the awe of this natural light show.

    Take the morning to enjoy your surroundings before setting off on an unforgettable husky safari. Mushing a team of huskies over the white, shimmering fells is an essential experience in Lapland. The husky safari starts just a short drive away from the Northern Lights Village and takes you on a fast-paced trip over the untouched snow of the fells and surrounding forests. Relax in the afternoon or choose an optional activity (reindeer safari, hiking or ice climbing - at additional cost). Finish up the day enjoying a farewell dinner with new friends, sharing stories of your winter adventure in Finland. Keep your eyes on the sky and fingers crossed for one last glimpse of the ethereal northern lights.

Detailed Logistics

Transfers

Round-trip airport transfers on the SkiBus are included (or you can upgrade to a private transfer; see Optional Extras below). From Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) board the SkiBus to its last stop in Pyhä, where your guides will meet you. The SkiBus travels between the airport and Pyhä several times a day – check the timetable. Travel time is two hours, so you'll need to catch the 18:30 bus at the latest on Day 1.

Travel options

There are regular flights to Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) from major airports across the UK and Europe. There may not always be direct flights on all departure start/end dates, but if you can spare an extra day, it's worth checking for direct flight schedules a day on either side. Should you wish to book additional nights' accommodation at your host's lodge in Pyhä before or after the trip, please request this via your booking: see Optional Extras for prices.

    You'll spend your first two nights in a rustic wooden lodge in the woods – the genuine Lapland way! Located in the heart of Pyhä, it's close to a shop, restaurants and the bus stop, yet the Pyhä-Luosto National Park trailheads are just 350m away. After a day of Arctic adventures, it is blissful to step into the cosy ambience and enjoy a roaring fire and relax in the sauna. The spacious lodge has seven bedrooms which you'll stay in on a twin-share basis (these can be set up as double rooms on request). The lodge is equipped with several drying cabinets, heating, TV, and WiFi. The kitchen facilities include a stove, fridge, freezer, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, water boiler, tableware and utensils. A nutritious buffet breakfast will be available to keep you fuelled. With its classic cabin design, the lodge has shared bathroom facilities with four toilets and three showers available to use, as well as its own sauna and changing room. There is also a communal lounge area to relax in, with comfy sofas to sink into after a day of adventure.

    Pyhä Northern Lights Village

    You'll spend two nights at the Pyhä Northern Lights Village, in either a stunning aurora cabin (with a glass roof section) or a spacious sky view suite (with a panoramic window framing the Arctic skies). Whether you're in a cabin or a suite will depend on availability and the make up of your group, but either way you'll be surrounded by the snowy Finnish forest. The cabins and suites have laser-heated glass roofs, unveiling the sky directly overhead and offering an extraordinary opportunity to witness the northern lights. Cabins and suites will be twin-shared, with comfortable beds, private bathrooms and showers. There is an on-site restaurant for meals, and free WiFi is available in the communal area.

    Your host will allocate cabins or suites based on the make-up of the group and the availability of each room type (which varies throughout the season) - the aurora cabins are standalone whereas the sky view suites, although not standalone, are a little more spacious.

Potatoes, root vegetables and rye bread are common carbohydrates, often accompanying game meats like reindeer and elk. Finnish cuisine emphasises the natural flavours of ingredients rather than elaborate spices or sauces, with simple herbs like dill and juniper berries adding depth. Overall, the food reflects a deep connection to nature, seasonal ingredients, and a respect for culinary tradition.

Trip level explained

Level 1

Easy

This trip is suitable for anyone with basic fitness levels. None of the activities are hugely demanding, and you'll never be exerting yourself for more than a couple of hours at a time. The trip is a busy one though, with plenty to pack in, so you'll be regularly on the go – although, there is some downtime so that you can enjoy the aurora cabins as well. To get the most out of the trip you should enjoy being out in the cold during the winter and come prepared with adequate warm clothing – see the kit list for guidance.

What will I need to carry?

You'll only need to carry a small day rucksack (containing personal items, snacks and water) during the activities. Your main luggage can be left at your accommodation.

Climate Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely cold and consistently below freezing (0C/32F) during the times of year when this trip operates. Temperatures at night will likely be even colder. Personal care should be taken to keep as warm as possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration and nutrition. Very cold temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at warmer temperatures. In severe cold conditions people may experience symptoms associated with Exposure, Frostbite and Hypothermia. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with cold temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

Reidar, Tiina and, of course, Niika were amazing. Including helping us get out of sticky situation on their morning off when our husky sledging was cancelled. In the time it took us to get a coffee, they managed to book us in somewhere else and pick us up to drive us there as well!

We saw the fabulous dancing northern lights and had both glorious sunshine and snowy conditions. I felt like I was in marshamallow narnia. As someone who has done many group holidays with other companies, I have to say this is the best by far. The other travellers were like-minded and interesting. The guides from Bliss were brilliant- I loved Anu, Caleb, Hradar, Jonathan and Sergei. I felt well taken care of at all times. I loved the e-bikes, wilderness skiing and ice climbing in particular. Worth every penny.

    We have just had an amazing trip in Finland with MBA and Bliss Adventure. Our guides Reidar and Kalev were legendary-full of energy, enthusiasm and knowledge. They were supportive and encouraging in tougher activities and took great care of us especially in the cold. We experienced-28, the northern lights and got a real feel for nature and the outdoors in Pyhä. It was easy to add in extra activities like ice climbing and wilderness skiing as there was flexibility in the planned program. The trip was also good value for money if you were to book all we’ve done and the places we stayed separately it would be much more expensive. Highlights for us were the huskies, snowmobiling and wilderness skiing. We also had a fab time with the group. We made it more active by adding on extra activities which worked for us. There was good downtime too if you wanted it. We also added in extra days at the beginning and end and I would advise discussing with the local team what best to do with this time as they were really helpful.

    It was an amazing time and recommend, it even if super fit, doing activities that made you stretch yourself, as different, so out of your comfort zone, snow shoeing, husky sledging that you actually have to steer and lake dip after sauna. I am 55 and not athletic at all and we did the fat biking which is with electric bikes and kept falling off in the snow but got great support and encouragement from hosts and managed to get the hang of it. The snow shoeing allowed us to see some amazing views and had a lovely lunch by a camp fire with marshmallows. . We saw the Northern Lights several times, by downloading the recommended apps. Make sure take a decent phone camera as can see with naked eye but better with the high exposure on camera. Northern Lights village had a great place on frozen lake away from light pollution. The accommodation was great and food at lodge tasty and warming as stew based and had finish deserts. Want to go back as a great place to experience winter activities such as the ice climbing. Our hosts Tina and Ana were a great team, very funny and kept our team entertained and relaxed.

    I’ve just come back from the most incredible trip, from start to finish, it was such a lovely experience and I honestly couldn’t fault a thing. The group of people were amazing, and as someone travelling solo I was quite nervous beforehand, but it could not have been better. Everyone was so kind and welcoming, and it made the whole trip feel really special, plus we didn’t really stop laughing the whole time. Our hosts Tiina and Anu, were brilliant and looked after us so well. They were incredibly reassuring if anyone felt unsure, and really amenable to everyone’s needs. It really showed how thoughtful and attentive they were. The adventures themselves were fantastic, from snowshoeing and dog sledging to ice dips and of course the Northern Lights. It really pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best possible way. The food was amazing, the places we stayed were beautiful, and every part of the trip felt thoughtfully put together. It was just a fantastic experience all round, and I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone, especially if you’re thinking about travelling solo

    I had the most amazing time in Pyhä - the guides were fantastic, the food and accommodation was great and I met a bunch of lovely people to share the experience with! Even though we weren't lucky enough to see the Northern Lights (cloud cover!), the activities were more than enough to feel fulfilled, including plenty of extra activities that felt like a real bonus!     This was an incredible few days. Lapland is stunning, the hospitality was warm and genuine, the food was delicious, accommodation very cosy. Tiina and Anu could not have been more supportive and helpful. It felt like staying with good friends. The activities were varied and thrilling. As an older participant I found some of the activities a little challenging but I just went at my own pace and enjoyed everything.

The 8 of us in our tour got along so well, the activities were incredible the husky sledging was my favourite for sure, the ice dip was also not something we thought we would enjoy but strangely we did.     Truly, I don’t know where to begin. Anu and Tiina are exceptional hosts - so personable, accommodating, and knowledgeable about their beautiful country. I loved the food (I can’t believe I ate reindeer and moose - and liked it!), the activities were wonderful (especially dog sledding), and the ice plunge and sauna is THE BEST! I can’t recommend this trip enough. Book it.

    This tour was brilliant. Ticked all the boxes, and was organised down to the finest detail. Tiina was our main tour guide, she is one of the best guides I’ve ever had. She could keep tabs on every member of the group down to their every need and even smallest requirement (she knew each members clothes measurements size, special requests, and their allergies). Her support team included Johaanathan and an intern - Lucie. Both were very capable and thorough in their attention… and all of them made the tour truly enjoyable and memorable. Highly recommend them and this tour if your after fun, adventurous activities, lots of outdoors, and making new friends and memories.

    This was a very special trip to a beautiful part of Finland. The guides, lead by Tiina, were exceptional and took such good care of us. You can see that they are passionate about this special part of the world and also in ensuring that guests had an enjoyable time with challenging but very safe activities. I loved the ice climbing and the Finnish sauna including a dip into an icy swim hole. I felt I had really achieved something with those activities. We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights which was very special.

    This trip was wonderful. We had a great group with 3 fantastic guides - Tiina, Joonatan and Lucie. They were so kind and friendly, they adapted our activities to the weather conditions and made sure we were very well looked after. The activities were great fun and it was very cool to try so many new things. Finland is a beautiful country with incredible nature and this trip allows you to fully immerse in the culture of outdoor life and then warm up in the sauna.     What an awesome experience! The guides were so amazing, our head guide Tiina was so well organized and knowledgeable. The activities were both fun and occasionally challenging especially in the extreme cold. The group I was with were all so lovely too!     This trip exceeded our expectations. Met wonderful people in our group and our guides were extremely knowledgable and friendly! We now understand the beauty and magic that makes the Finns the happiest people in the world. The activities were perfectly planned out from the Snowmobiling the first day to the dog sledding the last day. Loved being in the enchanting pine forest on snow shoes and being out on the frozen bogs along the fells on cross country skis. There are plenty of other activities in the spare time in the afternoons like hiking, ice climbing or fat biking. We got to see the Northern Lights on our last night. If you love the outdoors and want to go someplace different, this winter event trip is unforgettable.

    Yet another amazing MBA adventure - we were incredibly lucky to have seen the Northern Lights every night, with the first night being particularly spectacular. Whilst this made the trip extra special, it was awesome even without this - the huskies were a highlight, but every activity was amazing - even the icy lake dip was great (particularly when you have the sauna as well!) We were very well looked after by Inessa and Tatu who made the trip really special - and we ate delicious food the whole time. I recommend the additional activities - the wilderness skiing was brilliant (and you don't need to be a skier) and the ice climbing was great too - I was a bit dubious at first but it was so much fun and you're in good hands. I feel I've packed it in and ticked many things off the bucket list MBA never fails to deliver

What do I need to bring?

  • Main suitcase or backpack
  • Daypack (20-30 litres)
  • Ski jacket (waterproof jacket with light insulation)
  • Ski trousers (waterproof trousers with light insulation)
  • Down jacket (bring what you have and if it is not adequate you can hire one from your host. A large heavy-duty down jacket is usually required to put on as a top layer over your other layers to keep warm outdoors when not active)
  • Fleece jacket or similar
  • Thermal tops and bottoms (wool/merino is best, avoid cotton)
  • Thick thermal ski gloves/mittens (or borrow from your host)
  • Breathable wicking layers
  • Warm hat and/or balaclava (or borrow from your host)
  • Buff or neckscarf
  • Multiple pairs of wool or synthetic socks (or hire/buy from your host)
  • Warm, waterproof boots (of similar type to 'Sorel Caribou' snow boots)
  • Swimsuit (seriously)
  • Towel (for the sauna)

Snowshoeing is a type of hiking that uses a special type of footwear – a snowshoe – to spread your weight over a larger area, allowing you to move easily across powdery snow-covered terrain. While today's snowshoes look modern, snowshoeing has actually played a vital role in Arctic life for centuries, with traders and trappers using wooden versions to move freely through the wilderness.

Snowshoeing is incredibly easy, comfortable and safe. You simply clip your snowshoe to the outside of your hiking boot and off you go. You'll be in the hands of local, experienced, and trained guides who know the area intimately and will guide you safely throughout the hike.

The optimal time to witness the spectacle of the northern lights in Lapland is from September to April. This timeframe has extended periods of darkness and clearer skies, essential for observing the ethereal aurora borealis. It's important to acknowledge that seeing the northern lights is not a guaranteed occurrence; even within peak season, patience may be required as you wait for moments of clear skies. The shorter days of January and February heighten the likelihood of encountering the aurora. Moving into March and April, days gradually lengthen, and favourable conditions for aurora sightings continue. There is also a peak in auroral activity around the equinox of March 20th, making this period particularly good for aurora viewing.

Please ensure you bring along your valid driver's licence in order to operate the electric snowmobiles during the trip. Drivers must be a minimum of 18 years and have a full driving license that is valid in Europe. Finnish law prohibits driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or any other intoxicating drug. Participants are held liable for any damages caused to snowmobiles, which must be paid on site.

If you do not have a license, you can still enjoy this activity as a passenger.

You can leave your luggage at the wilderness cabins or aurora cabins while you are out adventuring.

The husky operations included on this itinerary are certified by Tukes, the supervisory authority that promotes the safety and reliability of services. The kennels are conveniently located near the cabins and welcome visitors by appointment. Here, you can witness firsthand the care and dedication that the husky mushers have for their dogs. The team of mushers here are passionate about their huskies, treating them like family. Regular grooming, veterinary check-ups, and a balanced diet ensure the huskies' well-being.

Whilst huskies thoroughly enjoy running, their carers maintain a strict schedule for the huskies, balancing exercise and rest. During the summer months, when temperatures are too high (over +5°C), they cannot run. Instead, they are free to roam in the kennel in order for them to get their exercise and be in touch with the other dogs. Late summer and early autumn, when temperatures begin to cool, it's time for training ahead of the winter season. As the huskies get older and are unable to run, they remain in the kennel as retirees and enjoy their golden years after a career of hard work.

This trip includes locations or elevations where conditions can be extremely cold. Daytime temperatures may drop below freezing (0°C/32°F), and nights are often significantly colder. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of exposure-related issues, such as frostbite or hypothermia.

Your guide is trained to manage these risks, adapting activity intensity and monitoring group wellbeing. However, it's important to take personal responsibility – bringing the right cold-weather gear (see Kit List), staying hydrated and well-nourished, and recognising early signs of cold stress.

We recommend assessing your personal comfort and resilience in cold environments, and consulting a medical professional if you have health conditions that may be affected. Arriving early can also help you acclimatise to the colder conditions, especially if you're coming from a much warmer climate.

Winter in northern Finland is very cold, so be prepared for a truly arctic experience! In January and February temperatures range from -18°C to -8°C. In March and April it warms up a bit, ranging from -13°C to 3°C, with snowy days around half the time. Days are very short, but that just increases your chances of seeing the northern lights!

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 72kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
