Trip level explained

Level 2

Easy-Moderate

You’ll need to have a reasonable level of fitness and an adventurous nature for this trip. You should be comfortable hiking or kayaking for up to four or five hours each day, sometimes hiking uphill along mountain or jungle trails, but the active hours are usually spread throughout the day with some rest time in between. Keep in mind that Colombia's climate can be hot and humid, so be prepared for the weather conditions and changing terrain, which can vary from lush mountains to coastal routes.

None of the activities are hugely strenuous, but some of the days are long and require early starts. There are a few long drives (up to 6 hours), but these will be a great chance to rest your legs while taking in dazzling views of Colombia along the way.

No prior kayaking or SUP experience is necessary for this adventure. You'll be provided with a tandem kayak, and your guide will give you full instructions and a safety briefing before you start the activity. It is important that you are able to swim and feel confident in the water.

What if i need to skip an activity?

If you've never tried SUPing or kayaking before, we recommend giving these a go, as tuition will be tailored to first-timers. If you wish to opt out from any of the included activities, just speak to your guide.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a larger bag suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you, and then a small daypack to carry personal items during each day.

High Altitude Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m. At this altitude some people may experience symptoms associated with Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Previous experience at high altitude is not necessarily an indicator of future performance. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with altitude by carefully managing the rate of ascent and the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided. Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover up to the maximum altitude visited on this trip as well as emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

Climate Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely high during the times of year when this trip operates. High humidity and limited access to shade can also be factors, and warm temperatures can continue into the nighttime, which additionally influence the body’s ability to cool down. Personal care should be taken to keep as cool as possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration. Very high temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at cooler temperatures. People may experience symptoms associated with dehydration and Heat Stroke. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

I had an amazing time! Colombia is a a beautiful diverse country. Each region was unique and we enjoyed different aspects of Colombia’s history, culture with an emphasis on nature and ecotourism. We had a lovely group who just made the experience all the more fun. Our guide Marcos was wonderful. He was so knowledgeable and passionate about his country. He had a great sense of humour and was always joyful and enthusiastic!

I loved this trip to Colombia. My first time to South America, and such a wonderful set of contrasting experiences between Bogota, the coffee region, Medellin, the coast at Tayrona and Cartagena. Each time we moved it got warmer! My first MBA trip, I really enjoyed the variety of activities. My overall favourite was the day’s hike in the Cocora Valley. The other group members were great; supportive, funny and no fuss. Our guide Marcos completely went the extra mile at all times, always with a great sense of humour. He was very keen to win at Tejo too! Now, where next I wonder? 😀

What a trip! An extraordinary journey through one of the most stunning and diverse countries I’ve visited. Colombia awakens the senses and reminds you you’re alive. This was an exploration of the beauty, culture, natural world and embedded fun of this vibrant and complex country across breathtakingly diverse regions. Massive gratitude to our legend of a tour leader and guide Marcos, who shared vast knowledge and passion for his country, as well as exercising loads of patience and an excellent sense of humour. It was like travelling with a friend. The group was a fantastic mix of people, who helped to shape the experience and were amazing fun. A truly memorable taste of Colombia. The dedicated activities and trips were varied and fun, and the organisations that were focusing on eco tourism and regeneratiing nature had me inspired. A 100% 5 star experience.

The trip is a great way to see some beautiful areas of Colombia. There are some long drives, as detailed in the itinerary, but it’s well paced and every day had a different highlight. It’s hard to pick a favourite day but Parque Tayrona was incredible! Our tour leader Marcelo was fantastic; knowledgeable, fun and looked after us brilliantly. The walks are not too challenging but be prepared for muddy conditions and be sure to keep well hydrated. Take good shoes, a waterproof, electrolytes and open your heart to Colombia!

  • Chen Z.

This trip was well planned and organised, showcased different aspects of Colombia and exceeded my expectation in many ways. Our guide Marcelo was thoughtful, fun and very knowledgeable — made the 10days an enjoyable journey. Some drives were long, but were necessary, and the variety of the landscape along the way definitely made up for it.

  • Emily D.

This trip packs in a lot and gives you a great taste of the different sides of Colombia. Pre-departure communication was excellent. Our tour leader Marcelo was brilliant - super knowledgeable and patient. The accommodation is of a great standard. Nice mix of activities, clearly with a focus on positive impact. Leaving with wonderful memories!

I had an amazing time on this trip. Excellent itinerary and guide with a lot of fun and different activities. There aren't many group trip itineraries that allow you to see so many different regions of Colombia. That's because Colombia is topographically fragmented and it does take some time to get around. If you sign up for this tour you should note that this means long transfers on some days, especially in the early part of the trip when moving through the Andes. Overall I think it's worth it in order to see some incredibly beautiful places and many of them off the beaten path. For example we visited a village near Ibagué where some very friendly locals seemed to have never met any tourists before. By the time you get to the Caribbean things are little flatter and closer together with shorter transfers. Despite seeing a lot of the country in just 10 days, Colombia is a beautiful and interesting place and I look forward to visiting again, possibly with another MBA trip. Our guide Dani was excellent: well-organised, friendly, and receptive. I noticed no hiccups despite a complex itinerary and this being the first iteration of this trip. The trip is "easy" in that you are not doing long strenuous hikes every day. However, it's worth noting the itinerary is packed, with early mornings, and some of the hikes are technically challenging with mud and uneven terrain. You need good shoes and good waterproof hiking gear. (As we learned, it's never really the "dry" season in the Andes. ) This is not a relaxed beach vacation. It's all well worth it.

Colombia had been at the top of my bucket list for so long that I feared my expectations might be too high, but this trip exceeded all my expectations and more. Our tour guide Dani was amazing and made everything flawless. Colombia is so vibrant, diverse and welcoming and this tour had it all. From beaches to cities and jungles and all kinds of weather in between. I’m just sad it wasn’t longer. Definitely pack your walking boots and waterproofs!

I travelled with my daughter and we had an excellent time travelling through this beautiful, diverse and colourful country with our excellent tour guide Dani who was with us throughout the trip. Nothing was to much trouble for him and he made the whole trip look effortless. His knowledge of his home country was to be commended. The hotels and lodges we stayed in were first class and the food was very good. The adventure was classed as easy but I found that one particular trek through the jungle in the Valle de Cocora was very strenuous and challenging. The excellent local guide was encouraging me all the way. Once at the top I felt a great relief and a satisfying sense of achievement. The stunning scenery that met me was breathtaking so well worth the effort. I was the oldest member in our group at the age of 70 All the other activities had local guides with us to ensure our safety and enjoyment.

Our tour leader Marcelo was brilliant - super knowledgeable and patient. The accommodation is of a great standard. Nice mix of activities, clearly with a focus on positive impact. Leaving with wonderful memories!
  • Beautiful trip through Colombia

    Elizabeth R. May 2025
I had an amazing time on this trip.
  • Trip of a lifetime

    Laura April 2025
Colombia had been at the top of my bucket list for so long that I feared my expectations might be too high, but this trip exceeded all my expectations and more. Our tour guide Dani was amazing and made everything flawless. Colombia is so vibrant, diverse and welcoming and this tour had it all. From beaches to cities and jungles and all kinds of weather in between. I’m just sad it wasn’t longer. Definitely pack your walking boots and waterproofs!
  • Excellent trip

  • A great first time in

A great first time in Colombia and with Much Better Adventures. There is indeed something much better! Hard to tell what but no doubt there is something. I will definitely go again with your travel company
  • An unforgettable trip!

What an incredible introduction to the diversity, vibrancy and beauty of Colombia! Our tour guide Dani was brilliant and made sure everything went smoothly throughout, always with a positive attitude. Highlights were the eco project Kasaguada, the hike in Cocora Valley, SUP in Guatape and the walk in Tayrona National Park. A few recommendations if you book this trip… try and go into Salento town on both nights you’re staying there… it’s a colourful little place with lots of food and drink options. . . and make sure you go and play the national game of Tejo! I’d also recommend booking an extra day in Cartagena at the end of the trip, and packing for wet, muddy and cooler conditions for the first few days even in the dry season! Thank you MBA, Dani, local guides and the group for an unforgettable experience.

FAQs

The sailing trip is weather-dependent; therefore, it is possible that conditions outside of the host's control (namely, rough seas) may require cancellation on health and safety grounds. In such a scenario, the host would endeavour to either replace the activity with something appropriate or rearrange the running order of the itinerary.

There are also occasional National Park closures that can be announced at short notice by the park authorities in Colombia. This is sometimes the case for Tayrona National Park. Your host will endeavour to share information immediately whenever a change is announced that will impact part(s) of the published itinerary.

You'll have access to safe drinking water at each accommodation, and your host will also carry water, giving you plenty of opportunity to top up water bottles and stay hydrated throughout the day. Tap water in rural destinations should be purified or boiled before drinking – your guide will be able to provide destination-specific advice. You may wish to read our guide to water filters here.

We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. For this trip we recommend approximately USD 40 per person for the main tour leader plus USD 30-35 in total to be shared by other local guides and drivers.

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme highs, where limited shade and high humidity can also be a factor. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but hydration, proper clothing, and sun protection are essential.

Before travelling, consider your ability to be active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have concerns – especially if you have any cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two prior to the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. From December to March, Colombia experiences its driest weather, with less frequent rainfall, making it an ideal time of the year to visit. However, thanks to its geographic location on the equator, the country enjoys consistently warm temperatures throughout the year, making every season a good season for travel, although occasional rain showers are always possible at any time. The wettest months along the Caribbean coast are September and October, though it remains hot. Please note that it can get quite hot and humid in the north, so it's important to stay hydrated and wear a hat and sun protection at all times. Temperatures typically range from the mid-20s to low-30s°C.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 311kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
