Snow conditions permitting, you'll follow a stunning route up to the Vratca saddle and continue under the north face of Mala Mostrovka to Slemenova Spica (1909m), one of the most picturesque viewpoints of the whole Kranjska Gora area. Admire the imposing peaks of the Jalovec, Mojstrovka, and Ponca – all over 2000m – from up close, before enjoying lunch then heading back to your hotel. This afternoon, pamper yourself at a beautiful sauna complex, where you can try Finnish, Turkish, and herbal saunas and cool down in an ice cave or pools with glacial water.

Bid farewell to Gozd Martuljek and venture across the border into Italy, specifically the Tarvisio municipality of Friuli's region, to uncover some truly memorable landscapes. You'll start with the idyllic Laghi di Fusine, two glacial lakes which freeze over in winter, creating a truly fairytale atmosphere. Next, don your snowshoes and hike up to Rifugio Zacchi, immersed in the silence and pristine beauty of beech and fir woods, and surrounded by giant snowcapped peaks. After tucking into a warming lunch, descend back to the valley to explore the charming hamlet of Mounti Lussari by cable car. Clinging to a mountaintop at 1740m, this alpine gem offers privileged views over the rocky peaks of Montasio and Jof Fuart, the Gail Valley, and the austere Slovenian peaks all the way to the perennial ice of Austria. Stroll through the alleys, shop for some local crafts and perhaps enjoy an Aperol spritz as you watch the sun setting over the majestic Julian Alps. Late afternoon, transfer back into Slovenia's Koroska region, where you'll spend the next couple of nights.

Today you'll head out to explore the Logar Valley, a little-known yet stunning mountain region which has been a landscape park since 1987. Considered one of the most beautiful glacial valleys in Slovenia, it is also one of the most remote. Today's hike follows a short and relatively easy trail towards Klemenča Jama hut, with superb views over the Kamnik and Savin Alps and the imposing peak of Ojstrica. Warm up with a meal and perhaps a homemade apple strudel whilst surrounded by granite peaks, before continuing on to the impressive Rinka Falls. One of the highest free-falling waterfalls in the country, it stands at 90m tall, and during winter it often freezes over. After lunch, you'll continue by road to Podoljševo, one of the highest mountain settlements in Slovenia, surrounded by isolated farms. Back at the hotel, enjoy some downtime and a well-deserved hot shower.

Relax over breakfast and then head out for a one-of-a-kind subterranean adventure in Mezica – you'll be kayaking inside the mountain, in an old mine with all of its original infrastructure preserved after it closed in 1994. Equipped with a helmet, a torch and safety equipment (boots-pants made of neoprene and a non-sinkable jacket), you will take a real mining train along the 3.5 km long Glančnik Tunnel. Next, you'll hop on kayaks to paddle 700m below the surface of the earth, exploring an underground labyrinth of flooded tunnels, gigantic excavation areas, and spacious underground chambers, guided by a former miner. This afternoon, you'll drive back to Ljubljana – Slovenia’s tiny capital, and one of the most underrated cities in Europe. Wander the charming cobbled streets and romantic riverfront buildings, then head out with your group for a few optional farewell beers and a meal in town.

Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

No special skills are required, just a good fitness level and the ability to handle three to four hours of hiking or snowshoeing per day. There will be some some uphill sections to climb, but overall no significant elevation gain. Some previous hiking experience is recommended. Whether you'll be hiking or snowshoeing will very much depend on the snow conditions at time of travel. Between January and March, the Julian Alps and the Logar Valley are usually covered in snow. If snow is present, all hikes will take place using snowshoes, poles or crampons (these are included in the trip price and provided locally).

Snowshoes are a special type of footwear that enables you to spread your weight over a larger area, allowing you to move easily across powdery snow-covered terrain. If you have never tried this activity before, don't worry! Snowshoeing is incredibly easy, comfortable and safe. You simply clip your snowshoe to the outside of your hiking boot and off you go. You'll be in the hands of experienced and trained local guides who know the area intimately, who will guide you safely throughout the hikes.

On the final day of the trip you'll experience a unique undeground kayaking adventure. This includes a short ride on an original mining train to about 600m below the ground, followed by short hike and a descent over some steep stairs about 95m lower. Next, you'll be paddling on tandem sit-on-top kayaks, along flooded passages and galleries. You will spend about four hours in the mine, including one hour on the kayak. No previous experience is necessary, and most of the passages are quite wide and don't require crawling. While there is no weight limit for participants, as the kayak's capacity is up to 200 kg, you should be aware that this activity requires basic physical fitness as it involves walking approximately 800 stairs, traversing through water, and walking on mining embankments. It is not recommended if you suffer from severe claustrophobia.

What if i need to skip an activity?

If at any point you prefer to skip any of the activities, just speak to your guide you will arrange for you to wait for the group in a specific point, such as a warm hut or restaurant.

What will I need to carry?

Your main luggage will be transported for you, so you'll just need a 30L daypack to carry personal items during each day of the activities.

Climate Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely cold and consistently below freezing (0C/32F) during the times of year when this trip operates. Temperatures at night will likely be even colder. Personal care should be taken to keep as warm as possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration and nutrition. Very cold temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at warmer temperatures. In severe cold conditions people may experience symptoms associated with Exposure, Frostbite and Hypothermia. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with cold temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

I joined as a solo traveler and felt right at home with a group of like-minded people. Slovenia is breathtakingly beautiful in the winter, and having a local guide Ales, made all the difference in finding the best views and advice. The itinerary is packed with highlights—Lake Bled, Triglav National Park, and the stunning Rifugio Zacchi in Italy. The food was delicious and the kremšnita cake in Bled was a particular highlight. It’s an active trip, but the pace is great and the scenery is worth every step!

This was my second MBA trip so I had high expectations, and they were exceeded for sure. A really fun and varied itinerary with a great group of people, and plenty of snow on the ground. Our guide Aleš was fantastic, knowledgeable, passionate, and he adjusted plans when needed to always make the most of our time. My first, but certainly not my last visit to Slovenia.

A very well designed trip encompassing numerous different activities, an expert guide, tasty food and great accommodation - the sauna experience was very much a team building activity! Despite the high price, would still very much recommend this trip as a higher-end trip

This was a fantastic trip and truly a one-of-a-kind experience. One highlight was kayaking inside a mountain in the old Mezica mine. After gearing up with helmets, lights, and neoprene gear, we rode a historic mining train deep into the tunnels and then paddled through flooded underground chambers more than 2,000 feet below the surface. It felt like entering another world. The trip also included beautiful time in the Slovenian Alps. I especially enjoyed trying snowshoeing for the first time—it was a new experience for me and a wonderful way to explore the winter landscape. Alex, our guide, was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and funny, which made the trip even more enjoyable. The group participants were also very friendly, and the atmosphere throughout the journey was warm and relaxed. Overall, I had a wonderful time—great adventure, great company, and the chance to try something completely new.

A fabulous adventure in beautiful scenery with some excellent staff. Some of the climbs were steep and sinking into the snow on the way down on day 3 was tiring but it was a great trip. Our group will remember the trip for the views, the intense discussion about the good coffee and good tat locations, a cheeky snowball fight and yellow cars.

An action packed trip exploring Triglav national park with fab guides Nika and Polona and a lovely group of fellow hikers. Bring a good pair of winter hiking boots for some reasonably challenging hikes (you will sweat!) with the reward of stunning views over snowy peaks. I loved visiting Monte Lusari village via cable car, surrounded by mountain ranges in Italy, Slovenia and Austria, and learning about mining history while kayaking a flooded mine deep within a mountain. Everything was well organised and ran smoothly. Dietary requirements are well catered for, I cannot eat gluten and our guides made sure we visited restaurants with options for me and others in the group, plus they baked cakes for the hikes :-)

A winter wonderland, this trip showcases the beautiful landscapes and is great for anyone wanting a bit of adventure in nature. I'd never been on a trip like this before and never been on a hiking holiday, so I was quite nervous, but everyone was very welcoming and there was no competitiveness, everyone was there to have a nice time and meet new people. The guides were great, accommodating any changes to weather, climate and any guest issues with ease. Their expertise and welcoming attitude were invaluable. They asked us on day 2 if we were happy to change the itinerary slightly as the weather in the mountains was so good. It was a suggestion, but was a collective decision by the group and I think we were all happy with that decision. I'd highly recommend this trip to anyone looking to hike in wintery conditions.

Had a great group to explore slovenia and a part of italy with. The hikes were all different and going in the mine for kayaking was such a unique experience! Ales & Nika were great guides and were flexible with the itinerary to ensure we got as much snow as possible and did extra hiking where possible. Highly recommend this trip!

  • Spectacular Scenery. Incredible experience.

    Jonathan P. March 2025
My fourth MBA trip had a lot to live up to as the previous three were so good. Slovenia did not disappoint. We hiked in the most spectacular scenery, not just in Slovenia but also Austria and Italy. We kayaked in an old mine in what can inly be described as a spellbinding environment and an experience you could never forget indeed you'd struggle to imagine. The food was first class as was all the accommodation. But a special mention must be made for Nika and Petra, our incredible guides who combined great knowledge with wit and charm. Finally, the other members of the group were interesting, intelligent and full of fun so my review would not be complete without mention of the game we'll all be playing on our next MBA trip. . . 'pancake or waffle King Joleon'? 😜🤣
  • Would go again!

    Annie B. March 2025
This was my first MBA trip and could not be happier that I went ahead and booked it! We were lucky and had incredible weather which made for exceptional views during our hikes. I would say that all the hikes are very doable and our guide Petra was great at adjusting the pace for the group. 10/10 experience, would go again! *Also as a celiac I tend to be a bit nervous about food when travelling but our guide Petra went absolutely above and beyond to ensure I had more than enough delicious food to enjoy, thanks again Petra!

    Katherine R. March 2025
What a week! Great scenery during the hikes, everything was so well organised and there was plenty of food to try. Petra went above and beyond to make the whole week memorable, jammed packed days of activities and lots of laughs with the group throughout! We travelled as a couple and really enjoyed this trip, our highlight was the kayaking in the mine! The hikes were all a bit of a challenge but completely doable, although we found using snow shoes an adventure in itself, we were always very pleased when the banana bread appeared. (It was amazing, thanks Petra!!)

We booked this as a special father-son trip before my 19-year-old moves out of the house, and it was absolutely epic. The organization and logistics were seamless, the adventure itself was mind-blowing, and the other group members were awesome. Climbing the Alps in -10°C, kayaking through flooded mines, and dining in the most charming inns and huts—it was all perfect. This is an experience my son and I will never forget.
  • Great fun, beautiful places!

This was a great week of hiking and outdoor adventure in beautiful Slovenia. The hikes are certainly achievable if you are generally fit and crampons/snowshoes are provided to use as needed. There's also plenty of time to relax and enjoy the mountain views, delicious food and the saunas/spa at the first hotel. Nika was a brilliant guide who is passionate about Slovenia and outdoor adventure, and out small group had a fantastic week with her.

This was a fantastic trip. The guides worked very hard, looked after us so well and ensured everything was perfect. Slovenia is a beautiful country, and well worth a visit. Nika and Petra were great guides and really took the trip to the next level. The weather wasn’t the best the first few days but they made sure we saw what we came to see despite that. This trip is well worth it!

Really good trip-the guides (Nika and Petra) were great and super flexible with the itinerary so we could make the most of the good weather and avoid the bad. They also routinely checked in with us to make sure we were going at a comfortable pace. And bonus points for the homemade baking they gave us (multiple times) as well.

My first trip to Slovenia was one to fondly remember. The trip matched the described iternary and lived up to my hopes as the views were spectacular, the walks were enjoyable and the caving/kayaking an unforgettable experience. Our group of 11 gelled instantly and the guides Nika and Petra were fantastic. The hotels were located close to the walks/destinations meaning the driving each day wasn't excessive which meant we could maximise the daylight without ever feeling rushed. As a walker from the UK I feel the difficulty rating accurately reflects the walks due to the use of crampons and deep snow in places however non of it was technical or overly challenging. I'd highly recommend this trip.
  • MAGICAL SLOVENIA TRIP

    Lucy D. January 2025
The trip was incredible from start to finish and the perfect way to discover the beauty of Slovenia in winter. Our guides Nika and Petra were impeccably organised, attentive, and made each outing exciting and memorable. The hikes in both Slovenia and Italy had beautiful scenery and had some gentle and some more challenging terrain. The accommodation was clean, warm and comfortable, with a wonderful spa and fantastic views of the Julian Alps in the first hotel. The group bonded really well and alongside our outdoor adventures we enjoyed some delicious Slovenian traditional food and evenings playing games and comparing our best photos of the day. I wholeheartedly recommend this trip and can't wait for my next trip to Slovenia!
  • Trip of a lifetime!

Wow what a trip! This was our first trip with much better adventures/ Bananaway and we weren’t sure what to expect but this exceeded our expectations. Nika and Petra were amazing guides and made sure everyone could keep up with the group as well as bringing us homemade snacks for the hikes! We got to sample a lot of traditional Slovenian food and the sights were absolutely incredible. The accommodation was nice and near the sites where we’d be hiking in the day so we didn’t spend loads of time in the car. The kayaking in the mine caves was the highlight of this trip and unlike anything we’d ever done before - so cool going down 700m partly in a mine train and exploring the caves below. We went as a couple and the rest of the group were individuals but we all got along so well and played games at dinner in the evenings at the hotel/b&b which was so fun and lovely to get to know new people. As two people who have never gone hiking before, we enjoyed the challenge this trip offered and the sauna and spa was very welcome to soothe the achey muscles! Again big thanks to Nika and Petra for an amazing few days in Slovenia- we will certainly be back!
  • Had an amazing time!

Another excellent trip by Much Better Adventures. The hosts Nika and Petra were great. Everything was organised so well, at all points we knew what we were doing and when. The kit they gave us was great. We always felt well looked after with lots of home made snacks thrown in too. The highlight was the kayaking down the mine. It was an incredible day. The food was really good. Tried a lot of traditional Slovenian. Certainly no one went hungry. The meals that weren’t included could be done around the £15-25 mark… and the beer was cheap! Accommodation was really good. The first place in the mountains being a highlight. The views were incredible. Overall we all had a great trip - the activities allowed the group to bond well quickly. I would certainly come back again!

  • BEAUTIFUL TRIP, BEAUTIFUL GROUP AND GUIDES

Great experience. A perfect trip to get to know the beautiful mountains and enjoy the wild nature of Slovenia. Not only you will enjoy spectacular nature, also the local culture, gastronomy included :) I encourage everyone who wants to discover this part of Slovenia to make this trip, and of course to do it with Petra and Spela, our guides. They both have a great passion in everything they do and they transmit it very well to the whole group,. Geat energy. so that in the end they are not just guides, they become friends! 😊 The treks, although they are not excessively demanding, are perfect for getting to know spectacular routes and corners. You don't need a great physical condition. Vamos!

FAQs

Although snowfall is common in this region from late December through to March, it is never guaranteed – so it's possible that conditions may vary on each departure. All activities included in the trip can take place with or without snow, and they are equally enjoyable. Your guide may slightly alter the hiking routes and distance in order to offer the best and safest possible experience.

The tap water in Slovenia is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels to avoid buying single use plastic bottles.

This trip includes locations or elevations where conditions can be extremely cold. Daytime temperatures may drop below freezing (0°C/32°F), and nights are often significantly colder. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of exposure-related issues, such as frostbite or hypothermia.

Your guide is trained to manage these risks, adapting activity intensity and monitoring group wellbeing. However, it's important to take personal responsibility – bringing the right cold-weather gear (see Kit List), staying hydrated and well-nourished, and recognising early signs of cold stress.

We recommend assessing your personal comfort and resilience in cold environments, and consulting a medical professional if you have health conditions that may be affected. Arriving early can also help you acclimatise to the colder conditions, especially if you're coming from a much warmer climate.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

The Julian Alps and the Logar Valley will be cold in winter, with snowfall common from late December through to March. Daytime average high temperatures hover around 1-2°C, while nighttime lows can be down to -8°C. You'll need to bring adequate winter clothing and warm layers for the hikes, but the hotels and guesthouses will keep you snug and warm during the evenings. The Fusine Lakes area across the border in Italy is considered one of the coldest places in Italy with its own microclimate, and temperatures often plummet down to -10 or -15°C.

Please note that snow is never guaranteed on each departure, but winter hiking without snow will be equally spectacular and enjoyable.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 256kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
