Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

This trip has been rated moderate due to 4-5 hours of hiking each day, with substantial elevation changes (up to 850m per day). You'll be walking in a remote mountainous environment on sometimes uneven terrain. However, with a little preparation, this trip is designed to be manageable for most, with a focus on taking in the scenery and mountain culture rather than overly challenging hikes. Each day provides plenty of time to complete the routes at a comfortable pace, with rest stops along the way.

It is worth getting in some preparation hikes at home ahead of this trip. The best approach is to practice back-to-back days of similar length hikes in hilly terrain. So that you are prepared to enjoy the trip and the rigours of hiking for 4 consecutive days in the mountains.

What will I need to carry?

On each day of hiking, you will only need to carry a day pack with snacks, waterproofs and personal items, with your main luggage being transported to the next accommodation for you.

The exception is Day 3 on the hike to Lukomir, where there is no vehicle access. On this day you will need to carry some overnight items such as spare clothes and toiletries etc. Your main luggage will be waiting for you at the Vrela Mountain Hut the next day.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

Overall this was a very enjoyable trip which thanks to the enthusiasm and knowledge of our guide, Samer, gave a great insight into the history and culture of this beautiful country. Across 5 different lodgings, accommodation and food certainly met expectations and in the case of the entire Vrela mountain hut experience on day 4 it absolutely exceeded. Most of the hikes were shorter in terms of duration and elevation than expected and on hiking days 2 and 3 , early afternoon arrivals at mountain huts leaves a lot of time for relaxation.

Samer was a wonderful guide; very kind, inclusive, funny and passionate about the outdoors and his country. Our group was small which worked well. The scenery was lovely and we were blessed with great weather on the last day when we went to 2000m. The accommodations were all great. Comfy beds, hot showers and cosy spaces. Plenty of downtime to let the legs recover from the uphill. Food was tasty and plentiful, lots of bread and potatoes!!

My first group trip and we had an incredible adventure. Stunning scenery, fantastic hikes, wonderful hospitality wherever we went and an outstanding guide who shared his huge knowledge of all things Bosnia with us. It was a privilege to visit this amazing country and to see it through the lens of today rather than the war news stories I grew up with as a teenager…a real sense of both history, community and resilience and I learnt so much. Thank you to Samer for sharing his beautiful country with us and being so kind; going above and beyond to ensure we had the most fabulous adventure.

The most fabulous trip. Challenging walking, fantastic company and lasting memories. Samer led with knowledge, enthusiasm and kindness and Maid with patience, tolerance and skill. The perfect team! Thank you to both.

This brief but intense outdoor adventure in mountainous Bosnia was the mental reset I needed. Samer and Maid were incredible guides and continuously went out of their way to show us the best that Bosnia and Herzegovina have to offer

I really enjoyed this short holiday with a terrific group of people. An overnight stay in the historic city of Mostar to start and then four days of superb hiking in the mountains along little used trails. An unexpected highlight was the local dogs who joined us on the route. The food could have been tastier and more varied and the accommodation was mostly very basic. There were some quite long bus transfers which I felt that the guide (Irhad) could have made more interesting by telling us about the country’s history and the areas we were driving through. However, these are minor quibbles in what was a wonderful break.

This is about the fifth MBA tour I've done. This was possibly one of the best. The hikes were mostly scenic. and all manageable and enjoyable. Our guide was fun but professional and the group all gelled so well. Would definitely recommend.

Our adventure in Bosnia featured almost too many highlights to count. The stunning, diverse, and sometimes otherworldly landscapes of the hikes, the deeply generous and caring spirit of our guide Irhad, the Bosnian coffee I can't wait to try to recreate now that I'm back home, the hospitality of the Bosnian people we met along the way, the sweet mountain dogs that accompanied us, the seriously amazing group of people and all of the jokes and stories we shared together, and I could keep going. Our host and guide were super communicative and helpful before, during, and after for any question big or small. If you're even considering this trip, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Just book it!

A nice trip into the mountains less travelled. Short but challenging walks each day out in remote country. A mix of basic functional accommodation and nice hotels, nice food, and some rest time. A bit of time spent in the coach here and there but on the whole a fun walking trip with a knowledgable guide.

    Olga S. August 2025
If I could give this trip more stars I definitely would! This adventure by far exceeded my expectations both in terms of its organisation as well as what Bosnia and Herzegovina has to offer (hospitality, food and of course THE VIEWS!). Our guide Samer made this trip extra special with his knowledge and wit. I really liked the fact that all meals were organised for us, in my opinion more trips should offer a full board. We got to experience various types of accommodation from a regular hotel, through a guest house and a mountain hut which were very authentic. The hikes were demanding at times but the landscape and the views fully compensated the incline or the scramble. I couldn't have asked for a better group of hikers either, it's also them who made this holiday unforgettable. I can 100% recommend this trip, you won't be disappointed. All I can say is that I wish it was longer!
  • Amazing Trip.

We had a fantastic time in Bosnia, with beautiful scenery and amazing hikes. Our guide Samer did a 5 star job for us all on this trip. Great food through out the trip and hospitality was excellent. Really impressed with MBA' s organisation schedules. We definitely use this company again soon.
  • Peaks, Canyons and Villages – Bosnia at its Best

    Prerna G. August 2025
This trek through the Bjelasnica and Visocica mountains was unforgettable. Every day offered something different – ridges with sweeping views, steep scrambles that pushed just enough, and peaceful meadows that gave our legs a break. Obalj was the first proper summit, and the sense of space at the top set the tone for the whole trip. Lukomir village felt like stepping back in time, with stone houses and medieval tombstones scattered across the hills. The Rakitnica Canyon day was tough – extremely steep climbs and a suspension bridge thrown in – but hands down one of the highlights. Finishing with the double peaks of Vito and Drstva was the perfect send-off before winding down in Trebinje, sipping wine and soaking up the old-town charm. What made it even better was the team. Our guide knew the trails inside out, kept the pace just right, and shared stories that made the landscapes come alive. The driver was just as much a part of the adventure – always there on time, cheerful, and somehow managing those winding mountain roads without a hitch. Together they made the whole experience feel easy and well looked after. If you want a trip that combines serious mountain scenery with real glimpses of Bosnia’s traditions, this is it.

  • Stunning landscapes of Bosnia and Herzegovina

    Glen T. August 2025
From dramatic mountain trails to remote villages, every day brought a new adventure and breathtaking views. The trails varied in difficulty, sometimes getting a little challenging. Visits to Mostar and Trebinje allowed for some more relaxed time to see other parts of Bosnia and get to know the group. Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and deeply connected to the local culture, which added so much depth to the experience. We hiked through places I never would have found on my own, enjoyed traditional meals, and met some great people. If you’re looking for an adventure with raw natural beauty and rich history, I can’t recommend this trip enough. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a hidden gem for hikers, and this journey was unforgettable.

Absolutely excellent hiking trip - Bosnia-Herzegovina is a beautifully scenic country and the people couldn’t be more welcoming. • Hikes That Had Heart and Variety

    Hannah B. July 2025
No two hikes were the same. Some trails were gentle, ideal for soaking up the scenery, while others brought a dose of elevation and challenge. The pace of the trip was beautifully balanced—no rushing about! Bosnian food delighted us at every stop, and the local hospitality was truly heartwarming. From welcoming villagers to our brilliant mountain guide, everyone we met shared stories, smiles, and sincerity. Staying in mountain huts and locally run lodges gave the trip a real, authentic feel without sacrificing comfort. Transfers and timings were seamless, and it was a joy to share the adventure with likeminded travellers.

This was my first MBA trip and it exceeded every expectation. I'm still glowing from the experience! The landscapes were breathtaking, the trails were the perfect mix of challenging and rewarding, and I came away with a huge sense of accomplishment. Our guide Samer made all the difference—calm, humorous, and deeply knowledgeable about the area, he made us feel safe and inspired every step of the way. The group vibe was fantastic—everyone was warm, welcoming, and full of good energy. And the food? Absolutely amazing—every meal felt like a reward. Definitely missing the Bosnian coffee already! I’ll be talking about this trip for a long time to come!

    Imogen C. June 2025
I was extremely impressed with the tour. I thought the tour guide was brilliant, accomodation wonderful and hikes just magical. I loved Bosnia. Id call it a moderate tour but you may want to add some days are challenging. 14 people was a bit too much for me and 12 is the usual max il go. However, everyone was very nice on this tour. I campaign for hidden disability rights and will recommend you to my charities. I was touched by how the guide trusted me, listened and it wasn't a hassle to take part. Il definitely do regular tours in the future.
  • Fabulous

FAQs

The Via Dinarica is a long-distance hiking trail connecting eight countries through the Balkans, the main 'white trail' follows the spine of the Dinaric Alps. The trail was created to promote sustainable tourism, foster regional cooperation, and showcase the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Western Balkans - an inspiring example of how adventure tourism can bring people, and even countries, together!

In the event of poor weather such as heavy rain, strong winds and/or storms, it is possible that conditions may become unsafe to complete the planned hikes on this trip. Your guide will assess the conditions and weather forecasts and make a decision with your safety in mind. If it becomes necessary to make a change to the planned itinerary, an alternative hike or activity will be offered.

There will be one guide leading your group, as well as a driver on the days with transfers.

Excess luggage can be left in the van, where it will be transported with you and available each evening except for night 3 in Lukomir (you'll need to use your daypack as an overnight bag on this day).

Tap water throughout this trip is drinkable. You'll also come across a few mountain springs during the hikes.

Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. Your guide will help with advice, however we suggest the below as a guideline per person:

Trip Leader: EUR 40-50 per person Local Support Driver: EUR 20-25 per person.

Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality - a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

Summer is the best time to visit Bosnia, with daytime temperatures ranging from 24 - 30 degrees Celsius, but cooling down in the evening and at night. Most days on this adventure are spent in the mountains where the temperature can be cooler, ideal for hiking. The weather can be wet and changeable at any time of year, so it's worth packing waterproof clothing.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 143kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
