Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

This is a moderate hiking trip where you can expect to be on your feet for 4-5 hours on most days. Each day hike has a fair amount of up and down (up to 1000m) but the pace is relaxed with plenty of stops along the way and some downtime in the afternoons for swimming and relaxing. Most of the hiking is on well defined alpine paths with a few easy rocky sections up to the summits. No previous experience is required but being used to walking in the hills for up to 5 hours on varied terrain will help you enjoy the experience. It is therefore recommended to try and fit in a few preparation hikes of similar length ahead of this trip.

What if i need to skip an activity?

Any of the hikes on this trip can be skipped, just speak to your guide who will help you arrange the best way for you to spend this time, whether that's enjoying the hotel swimming pools or exploring the towns you are staying in.

What will I need to carry?

Your main luggage will be transported for you, so you'll just need a daypack to carry personal items during each day of hiking.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

This was a great trip! Our guides, Ales & Andrej, were hilarious and knowledgeable. There were a couple of steep climbs, but nothing too challenging. The views at the top made everything worth it. I highly recommend this trip!

This is a must do trip if you're into hiking. It will live long in the memory :) First the good bits: The scenery is epic! Really underrated. Had I known how how good it is I would have come sooner. Honestly, it's only Patagonia and the Himilayas that beats it in my view. I did the May Departure so we had a curious mix of hiking through snow at times and beautiful spring mountain flowers. Our excellent guides (Ales & Anreij) put on us hard to find trails and paced the days well. . They also brought lovely local cakes and schnapps. They had an encyclopedic knowledge of the trials and Slovenian history. The hikes were pretty steep but sensible distances so I felt like I'd had a good workout each day without being exhausted. I really enjoyed the 3 course fancy meal out (which is included), the evening meal on the last night and the pizza just before the airport. The pickup and drop off at the airport went very smoothly. Some areas that can be improved: Both hotels were perfectly adequate but pretty tired. I found the mattresses too soft in both which impacted my sleep. The shower cubicle in the first hotel was tiny and the shower took around a minute to warm up. To describe the 2nd hotel as having a wellness centre is pretty generous. It does have an indoor pool but it's not really suitable for swimming and the jets in the pool seem to be on some sort of sequenced program. The gym is pretty half hearted - some very old equipment. There are massages available in fairness and a sauna if you're willing to pay €19 per person. The food was plentiful in the hotels, including for the 4 nights where we ate dinner there. However it was inconsistent. I had some lovely salmon and trout in the first hotel but also some very heavily battered tempura veg. The bread was consistently stale in the first hotel and many of the cakes likewise in the 2nd hotel. Odd given bread is a staple in Slovenia. The huts we visited won't be winning any culinary prizes but it's part of the outdoors culture in Slovenia so I enjoyed the experience.

Where do I even begin? First, this was my first time using MBA and I am hooked! Everything was seamless and safe for a solo traveler! We started as a group of random people and quickly became life long friends. Between the amazing conversations and stunning views of Slovenia, this trip will live in my soul for life. Now let’s talk about the best thing Slovenia gave us, Nika and Polona! Two of the kindest, most knowledgeable, and genuinely wonderful people I’ve ever met. Their deep knowledge of the trails & history made every step of the journey more meaningful. But what truly sets them apart is the incredible care and thought they put into every little detail. From capturing stunning photos for us along the way to baking sweet treats for us to enjoy at the summit (yes, really!), to planning incredible meals & enhancing each conversation over a meal. They went above and beyond to make each day very special. If you want to feed your soul, book it!

The trip was really well organised, and the itinerary was accurate. We had two amazing guides, Nika and Polona, who made us all feel very welcome. Their knowledge of the area made all the walks very interesting. They were also able to make modifications to the trip as a result of a day of very poor weather, ensuring we could get the most out of the trip.

A great week exploring Slovenia's mountains. Nika and Polona were exceptional guides, adjusting our plans depending on the weather and getting the most out of every day. We had a mixture of weather but there was still plenty to do and see. Some of the views were breathtaking, as were the dips in the lakes afterwards (be prepared for cold water but it's well worth it!). If you're looking for a fun hiking trip then go for this one!

  • Graham s.

My favourite views of the Alps so far. Walks are interesting but not terribly challenging- just some steep uphill. All fine if your used it. Fun swims in some of the most beautiful lakes I’ve ever seen. A very well planned holiday that will keep you busy every hour of the day. Food is plentiful and good quality. Guides (Nika & Polona) are exceptionally good, being highly professional and most of all fun.

  • A Perfect Blend of Adventure, Comfort, and Connection

    Charlene G. September 2025
Lovely holiday! Our guides were great - their knowledge of the region and skillful planning meant we were always in the best place at the best possible time. Even when the weather turned, they had a knack for adapting the plan to keep things fun and rewarding. This trip is such a great reminder to trust the process: sometimes the clouds roll in, the trail gets rainy, but with the right company (and you’re bound to meet like-minded, adventurous folks here!), it always turns into a memorable experience. While some trips lean heavily toward “roughing it,” this one struck a perfect balance. Each day was filled with great hikes (accessible, but still gets the heart rate up!), and by evening, we were unwinding in lovely hotels - a true treat after hours on the trail. The food was abundant and delicious, keeping us fueled for the next adventure, and the lake swim. Plunging into gorgeous (and chilly!) alpine waters with new friends and plenty of laughter was the perfect way to re-energize. If you’re looking for a trip that blends wild beauty, comfort, and connection, this one is worth considering.
  • Excellent holiday

    Rod M. September 2025
The hiking routes were well chosen, at the right level and just the right length to allow a swim after. The views were impressive, and with more clear weather, they would have been tremendous. The swim spots were varied with great scenery and clean water. Some warmer than others, but none too cold. The group was good fun, the Spa hotel high quality and the food was plentiful and delicious. The two guides, Nika and Polona, made it all work so well. They were fully competent, responsible, caring and had a sense of humour that suited the group. I would not hesitate to recommend this holiday!
  • Absolutely amazing!

Nika and Polona were exceptional guides, making our Slovenia trip unforgettable despite unpredictable weather. The week was filled with delicious food, engaging activities, and stunning landscapes. The accommodation was great, and the wine tasting at the spa hotel was a highlight. Highly recommend visiting Slovenia – it's Europe’s answer to Canada’s Rocky Mountains!
  • Amazing trip!

    Sarah K. September 2025
What an incredible trip! The weather didn't hold out all week (one rainy day and often clouds) but when the sun came out - wow! Incredible scenery, a brilliant group, and the tour guides were excellent. Each day is jam packed with a hike and swim, so be prepared for not much downtime and lots of steep inclines! We had great food every day, and also appreciated the wine tasting and sauna sessions that we booked last minute on a heavy day of rain. If you love hiking, cakes, and wild swimming I would highly recommend!

This is really an amazing tour! Packed with a great set of hikes, swims and awesome places to eat. Our guides Nika and Polona; were really cool characters; and kind of like friends! I was curious to see how the experience goes with a bunch of strangers; but it turned out to be utterly fabulous, met amazing people; hope to keep in touch with many. Highly recommend!

    Catherine W. August 2025
The trip was an enormous success for its first run, due to the absolute beauty of the country, the incredible guides, the group dynamic and the weather (even on the ‘rainy days’ we got some sun. ) Slovenia is lush and the views from the mountains are breathtaking and incredibly moving. Andrej and Ales went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. They are professional and organised but also hilariously funny, sensitive and kind. Ooh and the food just kept coming! I hope to be back again to ski some time!

Highly recommend this trip. Andrej and Ales were fantastic guides and they adapted the hikes/anctivities according to weather so we never felt we were missing out or that we were unsafe. Really felt like we got our money’s worth with regards to activities with so much packed into the seven days. The hotels were of a good standard and the food was outstanding

It was my first group trip and I would definitely do it again. Andrej and Nika worked with the weather (which wasn’t on our side!) to give us the best experience. Be prepared for steep inclines each day!
  • Wonderful Slovenia

    Jonathan D. August 2025
Had a great week of hiking in Slovenia. The scenery is wonderful and the food was also fantastic. The guides went out of their way to make sure we saw as much as possible and we managed to cram a lot into the six days. The hikes involve a lot of ascent so you'll need to be fit, but the views are more than worth it!
  • Slovenia Hiking Trip

    Mason H. August 2025
From the first hike to the final swim, every moment of this trip felt special. The scenery was breathtaking and the group dynamic made it even better. Andrea and Nika brought such warmth and care to the experience, making everyone feel welcome and supported. Their love for Slovenia truly showed. I left feeling refreshed, inspired and already dreaming of coming back.
  • Glutes of granite, thighs of steel guaranteed!

    David G. August 2025
I was on the inaugural iteration of this trip, and while we didn't have the perfect weather for every hike, we were given the perfect hike for every weather! The itinerary was expertly amended and adjusted by the guides to provide us the best experience on each day avcording to the forecast for the area, and the highest chance of sun/avoiding cloud and rain. Andrej and Nika were very knowledgeable, passionate and able guides. The hikes were varied, offering wooded trails, waterfalls, peaks, meadows, stunning views and some challenging and satisfying climbs. Food across the whole trip was plentiful, hearty and showcased a lot of local/traditional meals. I had the best time, with a wonderful group of people! Highlights for me included the lake swims at Črnava and Jasna, the hikes of Golica and Viševnik, and the time spent with the other members of the holiday - on and off the hikes!

Excellent time with an excellent crew that made the overall effectivity of everything we did very welcoming and engaging. Several times they went above and beyond all they had to do for the teams comfort. Loved the overall experience very much and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great challenging adventure. Nika and Andre know their stuff, made it feel special and welcoming, thank you!

FAQs

Outdoor swimming in Slovenia's lakes and rivers is a popular activity for locals and visitors alike, with the tourist board actively promoting it as a way to enjoy nature and monitor water quality in several locations. On this trip, you'll have the opportunity to visit several lakes in the afternoons following your hikes, as a way to cool off and relax in the stunning surroundings. Your guide will take you to each lake, where you'll usually have a couple of hours to relax, picnic and enjoy the water. Swimming is entirely optional and a chance to cool off rather than being a guided open-water swim where you are expected to cover a certain distance. Your guide will remain on the shore and the wild-swim spots do not have lifeguards or other supervision, so you should not attempt to swim out of your depth or beyond your experience. Water temperatures can reach a pleasant 19 - 25°C in the summer, but can vary depending on the season and weather, you should always test the water before jumping in!

In the event of bad weather, your guides will suggest a suitable alternative hike or activity.

You'll have one guide for up to 8 people, with a driver handling hotel transfers. For groups over 8, a second guide will join on longer hikes, and for groups over 10, you'll have two guides every day.

Excess luggage can be left in the hotel and is available each evening. Luggage will be transported between the hotels you are staying in.

Tap water throughout this trip is drinkable. You'll also come across a few mountain springs during the hikes.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

From May to October, the Julian Alps offer ideal conditions for hiking. May and June bring mild temperatures (10–20°C) and blooming alpine meadows, with cooler mornings and occasional rain showers. July and August are warm and sunny (25–30°C), perfect for getting up high in the mountains, though afternoon thunderstorms can occur. September offers crisp air, fewer crowds, and stunning autumn colours, while October is cooler and may bring early snow at higher elevations. Layers and waterproof gear are essential for changing mountain conditions.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 292kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
