Your host will welcome the group at Nice Airport, where you'll hop in the van for a scenic drive through Provence to the start point of the adventure at Lake Castillon, a beautiful body of water in the Verdon Natural Park. The action kicks off straight away, with a mix of hiking and paddling on the lake, perfect for warming up ahead of the adventures to come. You'll hike some lakeside trails, and your host will run you through the need-to-knows of packrafting, including a gear check and some tuition on the lake to help you get to grips with the basics. Lake Castillon, like many other spots on the trip, is also a fantastic place for a wild swim. In the evening, you'll head to the charming village of Saint Julien du Verdon, located on the shores of the lake.

Roll out of the tent and tuck into coffee and breakfast before packing up and setting off on foot, with your packraft stowed in the backpack provided by your host. The day begins with a beautiful hike along the ridges above the lake. After about two hours of hiking, you'll reach an old abandoned village with breathtaking views of the area - the perfect spot to take a break and enjoy a picnic lunch. In the afternoon, you'll continue the hike, descending towards the next lake of the adventure, Lake Chaudanne. Once at the water’s edge, you’ll whip the packraft out, inflate your vessel and hit the water. As you paddle out into this stunning setting, there’ll be chances to swim, and for the more daring, you can try a few jumps into the lake from the rocks! Around 90 minutes of paddling will see you to the other side of the lake, where your host’s support crew will be waiting to drive you to the charming village of Castellane, located 3 km from the lake. Set up camp here and head out to find sundowners and dinner in this lovely spot. The last taste of civilisation for a couple of days, as you'll be heading deep into the gorge tomorrow.

Enjoy a leisurely start to the day with some downtime this morning to explore the charming village of Castellane at your own pace. You can stroll through its picturesque streets, enjoy a coffee on a terrace, and perhaps take on the climb to the Roc Chapel, perched 200 metres above the village and offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the valley - a must-see! In the afternoon, you’ll set off to explore the Verdon Gorge from the water. Depending on the date of your trip, if the Castillon Dam is open, you’ll launch your packraft directly from Castellane and paddle down to the entrance of the canyon. If the dam is closed, you’ll embark on a floating adventure, swimming into the first section of the canyon to explore it up close and personal. Both options offer a magical and unique way to experience the gorge from within, right on the water. You'll spend around three hours paddling, navigating the first 20 km of the gorge, with its precipitous cliffs flanking the dreamy emerald waters. After the day’s adventure, you’ll head to the Chalet de la Maline, a mountain lodge nestled in the heart of the canyon. This will be your base for the next two nights. Grab a beer and settle in on the chalet’s terrace, the most welcoming spot in the Verdon, with a magical view of the gorge below and a peaceful, friendly atmosphere.

Take in the views and a delicious breakfast on the chalet terrace this morning before setting off fairly early as there’s a big day ahead. Your first goal is to reach the entrance of the canyon, located a few kilometres on foot from the refuge. Next up is a mini expedition into the first section of the canyon, a remote area inaccessible by any other means. Follow the banks of the Verdon River on foot, passing through three tunnels, and after about 45 minutes of hiking, you'll take a small trail down to the river. You’re now right in the heart of the canyon and it’s time to inflate your packraft. Your guide will offer some extra safety advice ahead of today’s challenge, as you'll encounter some white water in this part of the gorge. Launch onto the river and dive straight into the rapids, tackling fun and fast Grade 2 waters beneath the cliffs. This stretch of the adventure is a 12km descent, alternating between thrilling rapids and calmer sections, perfect for soaking in the spectacular scenery. The cliffs here are mind-blowing, some towering up to 700 metres high, more than earning the nickname ‘Europe’s Grand Canyon’. Take a break for lunch on a deserted beach, enjoying the tranquillity and beauty of this unique spot- you've earned it! Afterwards, tackle the last of the rapids before packing up your packraft and beginning the hike back, a steep, one-hour mission with around 400 metres of elevation that brings you back to the gîte. Grab a shower and settle in for another cosy evening in the heart of the canyon.

Enjoy one last breakfast overlooking the gorge from the terrace before bidding farewell to the gîte. A short drive will take you to a small hiking trail leading back into the canyon, a few kilometres downstream. After about an hour of hiking, you’ll arrive at the river at the bottom of the canyon, inflate the packrafts and you’re off on the final push of the adventure. Begin by navigating a few small rapids before reaching the end of the canyon, where the last few kilometres offer a calm stretch of water in an incredibly scenic section. Take in the breathtaking views as the canyon opens up into the stunning Lake Sainte-Croix. Your final mission is to paddle across part of the lake, where the support team will be waiting. After the crossing, head to the picturesque village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie for a celebratory drink, the perfect way to wrap up the adventure. You’ll return to Nice Airport in the late afternoon, where the trip concludes. What a ride!

Food and Dietary info

Breakfasts are prepared by your guides each morning at the campsite, with cereals, fruit, yoghurt and juices. At the gîte on both mornings, you'll be provided with the same plus bread and pastries, all served with tea and coffee before heading off for the day’s adventure. Similarly, your guides will prepare a picnic lunch each day, stopping in a picturesque spot to take in the scenery while enjoying sandwiches with fillings such as cured meats, cheeses, pesto and sun-dried tomatoes, with fruit for dessert. Your guide will also bring a Jetboil for hot drinks during the picnic.

Dinners on Days 3 and 4 are taken at the gîte, overlooking the Verdon Gorge, a beautiful spot for a sundowner and some typical home-cooked French food after an epic day of packrafting. Dinners are not included on the evenings of Days 1 and 2 – the group will head out to a nearby restaurant or café in the villages of Saint Julien du Verdon and Castellane. You should budget €20-25 for each of these dinners, not including drinks.

Vegetarians, vegans and those with other dietary requirements or allergies can be catered for – please request this in advance on your passenger info form. Your host will need notice to inform the gîte so they can accommodate dietary needs for the evening meals there.

Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

You'll need to be in good physical condition, enjoy being outdoors from dawn till dusk, and be able to sustain five to six hours of physical activity per day over five days. The hikes on the route cover a variety of trails with mixed terrain, rocky sections, and several hundred metres of elevation gain and loss on most days, all while carrying a pack. While this trip is suitable for first-time packrafters, ideally, you'll have some paddling experience in canoeing or kayaking, including the basics of moving forward, turning, stopping, and generally controlling your vessel. If you’ve previously paddled on Grade 2 rivers perhaps on white-water rafting trips, this will help you on these sections, though it’s not a requirement as the rapids are beginner-friendly.

Class 2 rivers definition: Light rapids with small waves and minor changes in elevation caused by obstacles in the water, which are easy to navigate around. Ideal for those new to white-water and looking to build basic skills.

What if i need to skip an activity?

A support team will transport the gear and luggage each day to assist with logistics, so arrangements can be made for a group member to skip an activity in case of emergency or illness. However, if you simply wish to skip an activity, this will not be possible on this trip.

What will I need to carry?

On all hiking sections of this trip, you’ll need to carry a 50L backpack supplied by your host, containing your packraft and all the necessary gear for the day. This will weigh approximately 10kg.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

I had a great time on this trip! Antoine was an awesome guide who kept things fun, and rescued us in the river :) The route was beautiful and the rapids, although at first a little intimidating, were actually really fun. The group was great and everyone we met along the way was also really lovely - especially the dog at the campsite. The only thing I didn’t like was that a couple of the paths felt a bit sketchy at times, but overall it was an amazing adventure. Oh and you’ll never be hungry because the sandwiches were so huge!

This trip was amazing. Our group was mainly made up from solo travellers and we all got on super well. Our guide, Antoine, was great and we had some very big laughs with him and the team at the Chalet. The food was incredible and very big portions, which was fantastic after such active days. One thing to be aware of is the climbs in and out of the water are very steep and quite scrambly, it’s probably worth bringing hiking sticks for the extra support. The packs are also pretty heavy, especially with the wetsuits and helmets in so just something to be conscious of as all hikes are done with these on, but by the end of the week you do adjust to the extra weight. The Verdon Gorge is absolutely gorgeous, every corner or spin in the boat was met with jaw dropping views. I’d recommend this trip to anyone considering it!

I had a great trip. Gorge du Verdon – magnifique! It was simply breathtaking. The group got along really well, and we had such a blast together. Our guide, Antoine, was wonderful, and so were the people we met along the way – both at the restaurants and at the chalet, friends of Antoine. Thank you for a truly great trip! All I want now is to return to the mountains of France as soon as possible! I give this trip five stars and highly encourage others to book it – you won’t regret it.

FAQs

The maximum weight per packraft is 110kg (17 st).

Your host knows France incredibly well having guided rafting, packrafting, kayaking and SUPing trips on rivers throughout the country for many years. They will monitor the conditions and make alternative plans if required, but this is a rare occurrence.

There will be one main guide leading the group - this trip has a maximum of 8 participants for safety and logistical reasons. An additional logistics team member transports the luggage throughout the trip.

Due to the geography and logistics of this trip, its not possible to store your excess luggage anywhere. There is a support vehicle throughout the trip which will transfer the group's luggage between the campsites on Days 2 and 3, and to the the gîte above the gorge.

The tap water is perfectly safe to drink in France. You'll be able to fill up your water bottle(s) or bladder from the campsite or the chalet, and your host will provide refills at lunch each day. If you wish to fill up straight from the lakes and rivers on this trip for some added wild factor, have a read of our guide to the Best Water Filters for Adventurers.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

This trip runs from late April to the end of October, with a break in the summer months of July and August when the heat and holiday crowds make it a less appealing time to visit the South of France.

In April, expect average nighttime temperatures of 8°C and daytime temperatures of 18°C (46-64°F). Spring showers are common, but there are also plenty of sunny days. May sees warmer temperatures, with nights averaging around 12°C and daytime highs of 23°C (54-73°F), while rainfall decreases significantly. By early summer in June, expect nights around 15°C and days reaching 28°C (59-82°F), with dry conditions the norm.

September and October are just as great as spring and early summer. September enjoys warm temperatures between 14°C and 27°C (57-81°F), with typically dry, pleasant conditions. October cools down to around 10-20°C (50-68°F) with more frequent rain showers, but still plenty of sunny days and beautiful autumn colours towards the end of the season.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 53kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
