Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

The hiking on this trip can be done without any previous experience – you'll have an expert expert local mountain guide to lead you during each hike. Although each day is not overly strenuous, you'll be fairly active for a few hours so the trip is best enjoyed if you have a decent level of fitness and agility and a love of the outdoors. The hikes are up and down paths of moderate difficulty with some steep sections as well as some occasional exposed paths. Please note that the elevation gain and loss on some days is fairly sizeable, up to 800m up and down, which will get the heart pumping at times – but the sweeping views and lush wilderness of Madeira will reward every effort!

During the trip you'll also enjoy five yoga sessions which are easily manageable and tailored to suit the individual levels within the groups, including beginners. You can simply wait out any of the more difficult postures if necessary, or do an alternative posture as advised by your instructor. The yoga sessions are designed to help you recover from the hikes as well as to relax and unwind.

What if i need to skip an activity?

As the trip is based in a single hotel throughout the itinerary, you are free to opt out from any of the hikes or yoga session if you prefer. Please speak to your guide if you decide to skip any of the included activities.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a larger bag suitable for all your belongings which will remain at the hotel and then a small rucksack to carry personal items during each day of activity.

Madeira was a wonderful adventure. Our guide was so knowledgeable and made sure everyone had everything they needed at all times. Trip of a lifetime!!!

We are a group of 4 friends who go on a trip together annually and this is our second MBA trip. The hotel is fantastic, location, rooms, food, with the yoga studio facing directly onto the sea and Felice the yoga instructor was superb, focussing on extension and correction of postures which was very helpful. The sessions were challenging and I learnt lots. Previous yoga experience didn’t really matter, as she was able to pitch at the right level for new and experienced, alike. It was enlightening and informative to have individual correction on some poses I thought I had been doing correctly for years! Watching the sunrise over the sea in front of us during our practice was very special. The hiking with Pedro was safe and steady. We had some beautiful walks high up in the rain forest, truly stunning and down a beautiful steep zig zag slope, with stunning flora and fauna to the sea. High winds sadly prevented us going up high onto the peak in the last day , so we stayed low on a Levada balcony route, about 200m height. Pedro made the right decision for group safety, taking into account the whole group ability, but it inevitably was disappointing not to go up high and see Madeira from the peaks it is famous for. I would say that the hiking was easy. I anticipated 4/5 hour days walking, at a good pace. Some days it felt like 3-3. 5 hours. A few of us felt the pace was slow on the flat, with us walking closely together in a long crocodile of 10 of us, regularly concertina- ing. I think perhaps the grade of moderate/3 should be adjusted down, as although there was one good steep section uphill at the start of Day 1, otherwise walking was predominantly flat along Levadas. Pedro was very informative about Madeira and plants, which was very interesting and he was great company. Pedro was also very helpful with suggestions for things to do/restaurants/bars in Madeira for those of us staying for a couple of days after the trip, which was super helpful. The divers were cheerful and helpful, at all times. We all enjoyed the trip. Weather wasn’t great, but no one can ever predict that! Thankyou MBA

I had a great time on the Madeira Hiking and Yoga trip which was my first solo trip. I couldn’t have asked for a better group. The communication throughout trip was excellent, the hotel Sentido Galosol was lovely and had the best breakfast, and our guide and yoga teacher were top notch. I have no complaints and look forward to my next MBA trip.

This was my first trip with MBA, I’m already searching for where to go next. Beautiful accommodations, lovely people, overall a great experience. The hiking was incredible, and Day One was an hour and a half of uphill stairs! I loved the yoga - it was not a flow where you can detach a bit, but Felicite gave a lot of corrections and information for us to improve our practice. It was a professional class, and a great idea to pair it with hiking! Peidro our guide was wonderful.

Just got home from a lovely week in Madeira. Thoroughly enjoyed this trip, the yoga sessions were great, suitable for beginners as well as experienced yogis. The hikes were varied & the scenery was beautiful. I would say it felt more like walking rather than hiking. Due to bad weather, we weren’t able to hike on our final day and our guide Pedro who was lovely, adapted the walk to the weather situation. Communication, accommodation were all great. Thanks for a great week.

Madeira is beautiful and perfect for a hiking adventure! The views were amazing and Nuno was great at stopping and telling us about our route, the flora and fauna. The yoga sessions before our hikes were a lovely way to start the day. I'd love to come back and do the Coast to Coast trip and see more of the island

  • Karin R.

Overall the trip was really enjoyable. Communication before and during trip was great. The hotel was lovely and the group meals were well chosen restaurants. The walks were beautiful but not particularly challenging, I would probably rate the challenge as lower than advertised. Pedro, our group leader, was brilliant. He was very knowledgeable and adapted to meet our group needs wherever he could. The yoga was ok but I felt Felicite was more on her own agenda than feeling and adapting to the group’s needs and abilities, which was a shame. Overall though, it was a great trip and I would recommend it.

This was my first trip with MBA and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. The itinerary was thoughtfully constructed to take us to some of the most scenic parts of the island. Our guide was knowledgeable, focused on safety, shared so many interesting stories about Madeira's history and ecology, and did an excellent job remaining agile when we faced weather/ trail conditions. From our guide Nuno to our yoga teacher and the drivers, everyone was so kind and thoughtful in helping us experience the natural beauties of Madeira. This was an unforgettable trip with an excellent team that made sure we had the best time.

I had a fantastic 5 days in Madeira, we had a great group of people, our yoga classes in the morning were held in a beautiful studio with fantastic views. Félicie was knowledgeable and fun and I came away feeling much more confident about yoga, having not done an awful lot before. The walks were well thought out and very pretty. Margarida our guide was a lovely person who put all her effort and enthusiasm into making sure we had a great trip. Everyone, in fact, could not do enough for us, just lovely ☺️. The hotel & facilities were wonderful, we really enjoyed relaxing there on the last day before our flights out. Incredible views. Definitely looking for the next adventure!

  • Maliha K.

This tour was a great way to see the different parts of Madeira. Isabel, Jorge, and Felice were all amazing, and i couldn't have asked for a better crew to lead the activities. I would say the hikes are a moderate level overall. Due to the rainy weather during November, there were some muddy and slippery parts where i found the trekking poles very helpful.

The organization was smooth and all went well. The local guide Isabel did a fantastic job :) it was quite helpful to be added to WhatsApp group already before travel to quickly connect and align with Jorge and fellow travelers. Please consider that yoga is designed to work also for absolute beginners, so it wasn’t the typical vinyasa flow. The yoga teacher did a great job, adjusting to different levels and individual needs. Hikes were mostly great locations, however could have been longer and more challenging. All in all the guide still managed to find solutions for all needs :)

Lovely tour which combines hiking and yoga. The morning yoga with Felice was amazing and super energetic, a perfect way to start the day before going on a hike. The views in Madeira are incredible; each hike offers a different perspective of the island. The food was also amazing, with great options for veggie.
  • Amazing tropical views in Madeira

    Eva B. October 2025
Just had and incredible time in Madeira with a very fun, up-for - everything and diverse group of people. The scenic views and all landscape were amazing and all the hikings routes showed such a variety of natural beauty. Most of the routes had very challenging parts (hours!) with VERY steep and stairs-heavy ascends and descends as there is not any flat parts in this island!. All very worth for the views but climbing up was very physically demanding, and would rate it as challenging more than moderate. Yoga sessions were incredible as it was the teacher Felicie :) , a pure moment of calm that made you feel ready for the challenges, just a bit rushed sometimes though. ! Food for the trips and breakfast spread was really good and for the other days you need dinner only have 2 local restaurants as choice in the surroundings. Not much free time as always in yoga, hiking or in the go to the next activity , but there are 2 pools to enjoy and the whole gardens of the hotel are amazing. Wine tasting experience was great and in a lovely location. For the swimming ensure you get a few euros with you for the cable car if needed! As it was a new program there were times of a bit of doubts/changes about the itinerary but all was a work in progress! Definetely another incredible adventure and would fully recommend it :)

FAQs

Absolutely not! This is far from a standard yoga retreat. Don't expect to follow a rigid and strict activity schedule or a restrictive detoxing diet. This adventure was designed for people who practice and love yoga, or who are just curious about it and want to experience the amazing benefits it brings for the first time. But it’s also fun, with plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding nature trails on foot, and enjoy delicious food and wine, all in the company of like-minded people. Relaxing and not taking yourself too seriously is kind of mandatory here!

Throughout the trip, you’ll enjoy five yoga classes led by a certified and experienced instructor. The sessions will take place in a spacious indoor room, just a few metres from your studios, featuring high ceilings and natural light. Depending on your daily itinerary, the classes will be a mix of morning or evening sessions. The primary focus will be on Vinyasa yoga, a dynamic practice that synchronises movement with breath to create a smooth flow between poses. Special attention will be given to alignment, helping you achieve balance and efficiency while tailoring the practice to your individual needs and even total beginners. There will be also some Hatha yoga included, offering a slower, more focused practice centred around holding postures, breath control, and cultivating inner stillness. This provides a complement to the more energetic Vinyasa sessions, fostering stability, mindfulness, and deeper concentration.

The tap water in Madeira is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels, public fountains and at restaurants to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.

Marta Marinelli, raised in Italy’s serene Prosecco Hills, dreamt of global adventures, inspired by her father's travel stories. Her passion evolved into a career, backed by a decade of studies including degrees in international tourism and destination management. She’s worked in the adventure travel sector since 2012, living in Italy, the UK, and now sunny Portugal.

Over twenty years, Marta has explored over 55 countries, visiting remote areas like Ghana, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Haiti and Nepal’s Upper Mustang region. As a Senior Adventure Expansion Manager at Much Better Adventures, she focuses on creating life-changing experiences, ranging from multi-activity adventures, challenging treks to ultimate adventures in iconic places. She loves the challenge of finding the best local adventure hosts around the world, collaborating on adventures that offer genuine immersion, pushing beyond the beaten path and working on exclusive itineraries that challenge your comfort zone.

What makes her tick? Enabling people to live adventure-rich lives while positively impacting and empowering local communities around the world, generating sustainable opportunities for both the host, guides, community, and the environment.

No. You'll need to have a larger bag suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you, and then a small rucksack to carry personal items during each day of activity.

You can leave any excess luggage with at the hotel for the duration of the adventure.

The weather in the mountains can be pretty unpredictable, with rain and cold temperatures a possibility at any time of the year – especially at higher altitudes (above 1500m). The best you can do is to be prepared for anything and come equipped with layers of clothing, sunscreen and waterproofs.

Your host will be monitoring the weather conditions during the course of the trip and will suggest alternative, safer hiking routes should the weather get particularly bad. The dolphin-watching tour is, of course, dependent on favourable sea conditions – should this get cancelled, your host will replace it with an alternative activity.

Canyoning usually takes place at Ribeira do Lajeado, however the exact location will be dependent on water levels which will be checked beforehand by the local guides. If conditions in Lajeado are not optimum, your guides will take you to an alternative canyon on the island.

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme highs, where limited shade and high humidity can also be a factor. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but hydration, proper clothing, and sun protection are essential.

Before travelling, consider your ability to be active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have concerns – especially if you have any cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two prior to the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

Madeira enjoys a subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters, usually with sunshine throughout most of the year, giving it the nickname 'the island of the eternal spring'. Whilst the south of the island and coastal areas are usually sunnier, colder temperatures, fog, or low clouds can be expected in the interior of the island and at higher altitudes, so it's important to come equipped for all weather conditions year-round (see our kit list for more information).

In the winter months (between December and March), temperatures hover just under 20° C (68°F), still mild enough to swim in the sea or a heated outdoor pool, though there's a slightly higher possibility of rain or cloudy conditions, especially in the north of the island.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 134kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
