Trip level explained

Level 4

Moderate-Challenging

You really do not need any kayaking experience. Your guide will give you full instructions and a safety briefing at the start. You’ll just need reasonable levels of fitness to handle approx 25km of relaxed paddling over two days, a day of hiking and be up for camping out overnight.

The hike is not for beginners and is very challenging, particularly if it is or has been wet. You'll gain over a thousand metres in elevation during the hike and early in the season (April, May and occasionally early June) there can be snow on the ground (sometimes quite deep) which adds to the challenge. The same can apply late in the season too. We would only recommend this hike if you are an active person with hiking experience. It just takes a bit of time getting up the steep section but don’t worry, it’s no race to the top.

The route is about 10km each way, making a total hike of 20.7km. The elevation is sea level to 1,189m and quite steep in places. The hike is about 8 to 11 hours return, with an awesome view from the ridge at the top to the fjord below.

What if i need to skip an activity?

There should be no problem with staying back at camp during the hiking day for someone not wanting to hike. It may also be possible to just come along for the first part of the hike and then return to the camp, this does depend on where the group is actually camped as this may affect options. Alternatively, you could consider booking the Kayak and Wild Camp Norwegian Fjords trip instead.

What will I need to carry?

For the hike, you'll only need to carry a small daypack with personal items, spare clothing layers, snacks, a packed lunch, and a water bottle. See the Kit List and FAQs for further details about packing and luggage.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

This was one of the best trips I’ve ever been on! The fjords were gorgeous, I loved the hike with the beautiful view and honestly our guide Chelsi was the biggest gem. She made the trip incredibly fun, easy and comfortable. She was really knowledgeable and shared great fun facts along the way! Would recommend this trip to anyone!

I booked this 3-night trip with a friend and it absolutely didn’t disappoint. The Nordic Ventures team were fantastic from start to finish, and Ryan, our guide, was brilliant. We had such a lovely mixed group too — couples, friends and solo travellers — 9 women and 2 men in total. The kayaking was peaceful and beautiful, passing waterfall after waterfall through landscapes that felt like another world. It wasn’t too tough at all; we kept a steady pace, and Ryan made sure everyone stayed together while sharing stories about the landscape along the way. The hike was incredible. Challenging in parts, but everything around us was so beautiful that it made it easy to keep going. The scenery and terrain kept changing constantly — more waterfalls everywhere, streams to hop across, sheep to dodge. Again, Ryan made sure everyone felt looked after and was doing well throughout. The fjord-side camp was incredibly charming too. The tents were decent, with warm sleeping bags and roll mats provided — although I was definitely glad I brought a pillow! Ryan took such good care of us: cooking great meals (BBQ, curry, pancakes, pasta), keeping us stocked with snacks whenever we needed them (biscuits, trail mix, chocolate, crisps, fruit, marshmallows, sweets/lollies), and somehow always appearing with hot tea, coffee or soup at exactly the right moment. The hot towels first thing in the morning were such a thoughtful touch. He was knowledgeable, calm, efficient, and always smiling — genuinely couldn’t have asked for a better guide. We had a lot of rain, but honestly it didn’t bother us. The camp shelter was great, and packing the right clothes made all the difference. Everyone in the group pitched in too — helping set up camp, prepare meals, wash up, grab the tarp when the wind picked up (!), and keep the campfire going. Having such a good group really made the trip even more special. The weather caused a few hiccups along the way, but the Nordic Ventures team handled everything brilliantly and kept things running smoothly. Overall, a brilliant trip, and one I’d do again in a heartbeat — whether with friends, my husband, or solo. I’d probably invest in even better waterproofs and maybe a better sleeping mat if I could fit one in my bag, but it was completely worth the money.

The whole weekend was amazing but quite a challenge. The information on the website mentions a hike, we were climbing in snow and needed snow shoes for the summit. These were provided but it was certainly more challenge than a hike!!

I had the best time on this trip - loved every single second, from start to finish! Ian our tour guide was brilliant and really took us on an adventure. The itinerary worked perfectly - including all the activities, meals, camping and time for our group to chill, chat and even roast marshmallows around the campfire! Our group got on really well and was full of people from all walks of life. Lots of laughs, good chats and memories made along the way. . . thank you to everyone behind the scenes for making this trip what it is. Don't hesitate to book!

I don't tend to write many reviews but this trip felt worthy of one. We did the 3 day kayak, hike and wild camping in the fjords and it was incredible! A seamless experience from start to end, extremely well organised and all staff were super friendly. Its run abit like a military operation making sure everyone had what they need and to get the best experience. They keep you very well feed too. A special shout out to our amazing guide, Tach, she was absolutely brilliant 10/10. If your thinking of doing this trip I would extremely recommend it. We had a group of 4 of us, mixture of family and friends, but lots of the group of 12 were solo travelling and it was such a great laugh. Everyone got on well and made the experience even more memorable.

Could not recommend this trip more! Jordan was amazing leading the team, very knowledgeable, well organised and made me feel completely at ease with it being my first time on a solo trip. Deffo 5 stars 🌟

I’ve wanted to experience the fjords for a long time, and this trip surpassed all expectations — even with some intermittent rain. It was an incredible way to experience the vast beauty of the fjords up close. The personal highlight for me was the view from the summit on the second day; it was absolutely breathtaking. The trip was physically demanding at times, but the guide made sure everyone felt comfortable and was able to go at their own pace. As someone with limited kayaking experience, I really appreciated the chance to build confidence on the water. I also learned a great deal about Norwegian culture while enjoying the excitement and adventure of the trip! Tempted to go back myself now!

Wonderfully organized without feeling rigid — the kind of trip where you're never stressed about logistics because someone clearly thought hard about all of it so you don't have to. Our primary role was to take in the scenic views and keep paddling forward. Jordan, our guide, was knowledgeable in that way where it never feels like a lecture, and genuinely part of the group rather than herding it. The camaraderie that grew over the days felt earned, though it was built on the foundation of us all being the sort of people who prefer to fly to Norway to sleep outdoors in the cold over a long weekend rather than sink into a couch. Recommend.

  • David A.

An absolutely outstanding trip from start to finish. Callum was an exceptional guide — knowledgeable, calm and made everything feel effortless while keeping the whole group relaxed and confident. Starting in Voss, we quickly headed out into the fjords, kayaking across incredibly calm water that perfectly reflected the surrounding mountains. With low mist drifting through the peaks, the whole place felt surreal — like paddling through a painting. Wild camping in that setting was something special, but the real highlight was hiking Breiskrednosi. Reaching the summit in snowshoes, surrounded by vast snow-covered landscapes, felt like stepping into a Netflix adventure. Kayaking back on the final day, with those same glassy waters and dramatic scenery, was the perfect finish before a smooth transfer to Bergen. Every detail was spot on. If you’re even thinking about this trip — book it. The experience, the scenery, the whole atmosphere… unforgettable.

  • Trip of a lifetime!!

    Jack D. May 2026
Going into this trip, I was super excited but also nervous because I am only 21, and wasn't sure if there would be others my age and if I would fit it. Yet the first day, I was immediately proved wrong. The group, the guide, and the vibes were better than I could have imagined. The actual trip was also incredible; the scenery of the fjords, the gorgeous blue water, and the warmth of the sun. Coming from Canada, where there is already tons of amazing outdoor scenery, I was truly amazed of the mountain cottages, the snow caps atop mountains, and such blue water. My guide, Ian, was awesome. He was clearly very experienced and was a fun, chill person to chat to while paddling, and cooked up the best meals at dinner time. I would 100% go on another Much Better Adventures trip, either in Norway, or somewhere else in the world. I am truly inspired after this adventure!!!
  • The Scenery is Spectacular

    Anne P. May 2026
Pros: Perfect amount of days with easier kayaking days sandwiching the hard hike. The hike is challanging but absolutely doable and the view at the top is absolutely worth it. The comradery was amazing. Everyone was supportive and a delight to share this experience with. The guide (Peter) really kept things lively and was excellent. The food and drinks were delicious as well. Cons: The communication leading up to the trip was lacking. A WhatsApp was made but the organizers didn't explain that it didn't include everyone in the group and it would have been nice for the group leaders (different than the guides) to have started the conversation off. Also, I noted a condition I have in the MBA profile ahead of time but my guide had no idea about it so that was not communicated well to him. Nothing of this detracted from the wonderful time we had but could have made the start of the trip that much smoother. Tips: Bring everything listed including sunscreen and sleeping bag liners. We were lucky and had wonderful weather but Norway's weather can change in a heartbeat. I loved using my hiking poles. Also recommend a travel pillow and eye mask as you sleep on the ground and it stays light very late and gets light very early. If you get to the hostel early in the afternoon the first day then you likely can use their sauna! Overall: ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND. It is breathtaking!
  • Amazing weekend in the Fjords

    Hannah P. May 2026
Loved this trip and Ian, our guide, was amazing. I was very lucky to have such a fun group too and it was certainly a weekend to remember. The walk and the kayaking were both more challenging than I was expecting (the walk due to the snow, and the kayaking due to the wind) but it was classic type B fun. I do think it would be nice for MBA to organise a meal for the first night in Voss, especially as it's a fairly expensive trip, but would definitely recommend it regardless.

I thoroughly enjoyed our adventure to Norway. Our guide was excellent, she was one of the best I’ve ever met. She was relaxed yet took care of us all. The trip itself is full on! The hike was epic and exhausting! You would defo need good levels of fitness for it.

What an amazing experience! I came back from a three day trip kayaking, hiking and wild camping in the Norwegian fjords and I am still in awe with how great it was! It was very well organised and everyone was super friendly. If you are thinking of booking this trip, don't hesitate! You will be blown away by some amazing scenery!

From start to finish. This trip was organised so well by all involved. Jan picked us up from the airport. No fuss and dropped us at the hostel. Which I have to say was truly lovely. Cold water swim and sauna. Yes please! Then the trip. What an amazing way ti see the landscape of the Fjords. Kyaking, hiking and camping. However apart from all of that. The guide Chelsi. Well what a guide. She worked so hard to make sure we were all fed 3 times a day, guided us through the Fjords and up a very snow laden mointain. Whilst laughing and smiling all day long. She really did make the trip. I would highly recommend. 1 point to make this is a level 4 trip. So a good amount of fitness and indurance is useful. Thank you Chelsi
  • Great fun

    Meera N. May 2026
I had an amazing time filled with fun and adventure. The hike was definitely challenging, but absolutely worth the effort. The team at MBA was incredibly supportive, guiding us every step of the way, which really put me at ease—especially since it was my first time kayaking. The people I met along the way were genuinely kind and friendly. We came together as a team, sharing responsibilities like cooking, cleaning, and setting up camp, which made the whole experience even more memorable. Our guide Peter was the best, very friendly and a good supportive guide.
  • The best trip ever!

I had an amazing time on this trip. Everything was so well planned and I loved how all the essential items were provided for us making it easy to show up and have a great time. Our guide Peter did a great job at keeping us on track, motivating us, and had great cooking and photography skills as well. I’ve never kayaked before but I felt really safe on these waters even when the waves got a bit stronger. The hike was a bit more challenging than I expected as there was still some snow that was starting to melt in late April as we went up in elevation, but that was mainly on just one short steep section. Overall a very doable hike otherwise. We had the extra weight of snow shoes added to our backpacks for part of the hike but they were really helpful as we got closer to the summit. I was also very happy with the quality of the food. They provided so many additional snacks that I barely had to use any that I brought (besides for the hike) and Peter made sure we always had enough hot water for drinks throughout the day. We had such a great time I was so sad how quickly it was over!

  • Creating Memories : 3 Day Hike and Kayak Trip

    Catherine R. April 2026
Now that my friend and I are back, I can say what an amazing time we had. Difficult to do that as soon as we returned as the third day kayaking was brutal. I am in my early 60s, and knew that I would find the hike tough, and made it up to about 50 feet short of the summit. But I did almost give up much earlier than that and so am delighted that I got as far as I did - snow shoes helped when we needed to put them on, but they were heavy to carry the rest of the way - try to make sure you take a rucksack where you can attach these to the back of them. Flo and I knew we were pushing ourselves physically - but that is what we wanted - to do something out of our comfort zone. I was the oldest out of the group - Flo being 4 years younger. The rest of the group were much younger - being all under 40 and the youngest at 19. The guide was great; really knowledgeable and handled everyone really well. The food was fantastic - pancakes for breakfast, and chicken curry for dinner - how Jordan managed to provide such tasty food over a camp fire for the number of people I have no idea - but he did. The hostel for the first night was much better than I expected but I think we were lucky. There were 5 beds to each room, with a shower, toilet and sink in the room. However, there were only 3 of us in our room, so we were all on the ground floor (not the upper bunkbeds). It was beautifully located on the edge of a lake with a sauna - and we went in and out of the sauna and the lake (which was freezing but then there was snow so not unexpected). Sadly our room was on the far side to the lake so we had a view of the road. We found a great coffee shop in the town (wish I could remember the name of it - but it was one road over from the main road), but our evening meal was poor - we chose a pub on the edge of the lake, and it was mediocre at best. Called something like MG. You have quite a bit of time in the town, so you will need to find something to do to keep you occupied. The hostel also has a fridge where you can chill your drinks - so long as if you bring alcohol you only drink it in your room. They sell alcohol there and there is space outside to sit and good indoor space. Much, much better than I thought it would be. The staff there were also really helpful. I have put poor for the accommodation but that is because it was camping for 2 nights, and that is never going to be a good rating from my perspective. Would definitely book another adventure with MBA!
  • April 3 day trip

    Tracy D. April 2026
We were very lucky to have dry weather and warm days with blue skies, and very light winds. This meant cold nights, but we were warm enough in our tents and sleeping bags. This trip is challenging if you are not a regular kayaker or hill walker, but is still very achievable with a good base level of fitness. I'm nearing 60 so don't be put off by age. My advice is to read other reviews about kit that might be useful. Our guide Chelsi was excellent. She did a fantastic job of looking after us on land and water and in camp. Encouraging us and supporting us in all the right ways. She cooked great food to keep us fuelled and fed in camp, and packed lunches on the move. Plus little treats like a hot flannel for a face wash in the morning, bliss.
  • Birthday gift- Norwegian Fjord experience

    Audrone S. April 2026
This was a birthday gift to my husband and honestly, it was unforgettable experience. The nature was just incredible, the kind that doesn’t even feel real. Every view was better than the last. Peter, our guide, was amazing, very friendly, knowledgable. He supported everyone when things got a bit challenging. He kept us going with encouragement, shared great stories along the way, and made the whole experience feel easy and enjoyable. The group was also a lovely mix of people, really interesting and easy to get along with.

  • Make sure you are physically prepared for a big old day of hiking!

    Hannah G. April 2026
What a brilliant trip. So well organised and structured. Beautiful scenery especially from the top of the mountain. The hike is a very big day and you need a good level of fitness in order to get up to the summit in time to get back for tea at camp! Our guide Callum was the absolute best. Loved it.
  • An unforgettable 3 day adventure

    Samantha R. April 2026
We went on the 3 day kayak and hike through the Norwegian Ffjords with Callum as our guy. The whole trip was epic. The weather was great, amazing company and beautiful scenery. So much forward preparation must have been done for the seemingly effortless adventure. Callum was an absolutely amazing guide. He took such good care of us, on and off the water. His cooking was fantastic as was his banter. I would never have made it to the summit without his unwavering encouragement. He had our complete and utterly trust at all times. Highly recommended.
  • A dream

    Loren J. April 2026
Totally fell in love with the fjord. One of those trips where you remember what matters and are totally immersed. Our guide was super professional, dedicated, and made sure the job got done and got done well. Felt so safe, learned a lot, got to be present and breathe in the nature. Just wish I could have stayed longer.

FAQs

The trip will be split into groups of up to 12 people. Let us know if you are travelling with friends, and we will make sure you are in the same group as friends who have booked.

Our local host operates multiple trips starting on the same date, so for your included group transfers between Bergen and Voss, you'll share a coach. When you are dropped off at your accommodation in Voss, your host will let you know who will be in your group so you can introduce yourselves and perhaps grab some dinner together. On your first night, although the rooms at the hostel in Voss are multi-share, you won't necessarily be sharing with people from your group due to room configurations and gender mix. When you arrive at the kayaking base in Gudvangen the next day, you'll separate into your group of up to 12 and hit the water.

One of the most beautiful places in the world. A fjord is a deep, narrow and elongated part of the sea, that stretches inland for miles, winding around mountains, valleys, and steep cliffs. The fjords were formed by the giant glacier tongues and shaped over several ice ages.

There are a plenty of kayaks available for you to use with a mix of single and doubles available depending on your preference.

You're free to bring any luggage or suitcase you wish with you to Voss. On day 2, you'll check out of your accommodation with all of your luggage and transfer by bus to the host's kayaking base in Gudvangen. Here, you'll be given a 22-litre dry bag to pack everything into for your kayaking, camping and hiking adventure (excluding your sleeping bag and sleeping mat, unless you bring your own). You will be given a hard waterproof case for your camera/phone too, and you'll want to keep certain things handy such as your water bottle, cap, sunscreen and snacks. You'll need to pack light as your dry bag has to fit into the hatched compartments (bulkheads) of the kayak, along with the group's food and equipment which will be shared among the kayaks. The remainder of your luggage that you don't need on the adventure can be left behind at the kayaking base in Gudvangen, where it will be safely stored until your return.

Don't stress, your host will explain all during the briefing.

Absolutely. The train is 45 minutes faster than the included transfer and is one of the most spectacular journeys you can take by rail. Here’s how:

From the airport, get the Flybussen airport shuttle to Bergen bus station, or the Bybanen (city light rail - cheaper but slower). Buses to/from the airport run every 10-15 minutes, and cost roughly 90NOK (£9) each way. The Bybanen is approx 40NOK (£4).

From the bus station it’s a few minutes walk to the train station. A taxi from the airport to train station can be booked for between 350-550NOK (£35-£55), depending on traffic.

Trains run regularly throughout the day and don’t need to be booked in advance, with a single ticket to Voss costing roughly 200NOK (£20). Trains to Oslo stop at Voss.

You can buy tickets at the ticket office up until 5.30 pm, or from ticket machines. If you want to check the timetable or book online head here.

Voss Hostel is a 12 minute walk from the station. Head out of the main station and turn right on the road. Follow the road until just before the roundabout (about 750m) then take the left turning, following the road for 200m more - straight to the hostel.

For the return, make your life easy by jumping on the already included transfers to Bergen Airport.

We can recommend the following from budget to high price. There are many other hotels, however these are selected for their convenience and/or from experience:

Accommodation in Voss

Accommodation in Bergen

Here’s what your local guide has to say on drones:

We do not really encourage bringing drones on this trip for several reasons:

  • There are limited times where there would be possibilities for flying the drone.
  • We need to keep the campsites free of drone traffic in agreement with the landowners.
  • There is often livestock animals in some areas that may get affected and we need to keep a good relationship with the farmers.
  • We have seen some people being frustrated by drone traffic and can understand this.

Having said this, we do not prohibit drone use as it is out of our legislation. As long as it does not interfere with the issues mentioned above and you can fit the drone in the kayak, it will be OK to bring it along. Just please do discuss the use with other group members sometime after meeting up with them on the first morning to settle this.

The best way to meet your host is to take the train from Oslo centre to Voss (not Bergen), and then head to Voss Hostel. See the FAQ how to get to Voss hostel from the airport and just follow the directions from Voss station to the hostel. The train journey takes about 6.5 hours and goes through some amazing scenery.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

The weather in summer is generally very comfortable for kayaking and camping, with temperatures of 15-20ºC, sometimes more. April and May typically see the lowest rainfall but days are cooler (typically 10-15ºC) and nights usually hover a few degrees above freezing. Snow cover often persists on higher ground into April and May (and occasionally early June) and is likely to be encountered along a significant portion of the hike (your host has a stock of snowshoes if needed). We recommend joining this trip in July and August for the warmest temperatures, but it’s great all summer.

In any month it can rain and get chilly at night so waterproofs, good hiking boots, a warm jumper and some thermals are vital. This time of year daylight in Norway is constant with only 2–3 hours of darkness in the evenings.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 47kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
