By day, throw yourself into the hustle of market traders and the typical orange juice vendors who inhabit the famous plaza, or retreat to one of the many rooftop bars overlooking the square to people watch over a glass tea or a tasty tagine. Nighttime is the busiest time in the square, with exotic smells flowing from the tempting food stalls and the ambient sounds of street performers, magicians and traditional dancers entertaining the gathered crowds. After sampling the atmosphere, return to the calm of your riad to prepare for the mountain adventure ahead.

Trip level explained

Level 5

Challenging

Full days of scenic hiking, loose footing, high altitude - you'll need a fairly good level of fitness for this one. The views make the effort more than worthwhile!

Allowing two extra days on the mountain (compared to our classic 3–night trip) gives more time for acclimatisation to the altitude, as well as breaking up the long summit day and descent. The final day of trekking involves just a short couple of hours down to Imlil, meaning you return to Marrakech with time to explore the city in the afternoon and enjoy a celebratory meal in the evening.

What will I need to carry?

Mules will carry your main overnight luggage during the trek and you will need to carry your daypack with your daytime essentials (extra layer, snacks, water etc.). For the welfare of the mules, please ensure your main overnight luggage is in a soft-sided bag and weighs no more than 15kg.

High Altitude Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m. At this altitude some people may experience symptoms associated with Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Previous experience at high altitude is not necessarily an indicator of future performance. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with altitude by carefully managing the rate of ascent and the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided. Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover up to the maximum altitude visited on this trip as well as emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

Climate Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can range from extremely hot to extremely cold during the times of year when this trip operates. In very hot locations, high humidity and limited access to shade can also be factors, and warm temperatures can continue into the nighttime, which additionally influence the body’s ability to cool down. In cold locations, where daytime temperatures are consistently below freezing (0C/32F), it will likely be even colder at night. Personal care should be taken to keep as cool/warm as possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration and nutrition. Very hot or cold temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at more moderate temperatures. In hot conditions, people may experience symptoms associated with dehydration and Heat Stroke, and in severe cold conditions people may experience symptoms associated with Exposure, Frostbite and Hypothermia. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with extremely hot and cold temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

I met lovely people along the way - both fellow travellers and staff. The food was amazing. Whilst communication of the daily plan was more ad hoc, I trusted our guides had it all in hand - and they did! They were brilliant.

My first trip with much better adventures and it far exceeded my expectations Toubkal national park and the landscape was beautiful, the walk had so many nice views throughout and included waterfalls and wildlife. Guides were great and worked super hard helping us and everyone in our group was amazing There was more snow than I expected and we ended up using crampons for more than half the trip, for me this made the trip even more enjoyable and made it more of an adventure Days were quite long, 12hours of hiking followed by 14hours the next day. Probably this is longer than usual due to the snow. Food was really good, was more than enough to go around at every meal especially considering it was prepared up a mountain All 3 nights of riad accomodation was really nice and high end, the mountain huts were as expected with limited electricity and only cold water, we slept in a big dorm room with bunk beds Overall Would highly recommend this trip, especially if you enjoy mountain hiking in the UK/Europe because this felt like the perfect next trip to push yourself

Yet another amazing MBA trip. This was my 6th with them and they never seem to disappoint. Not the highest I've been at 4,167m but one of the toughest due to the conditions. Day 3 was a 12 hour trek, (itinerary 6-7hrs) having to use crampons on various sections and summiting Aguelzim mountain at 3,650m instead of traversing around it due the amount of snow. This day did break a few in the group, which was unexpected and a real shame. Day 4 was a challenge too. Having completed a 12hr trek the day before, arriving at base camp at 7pm, then up again at 3am for a 4am start. This was a full crampon trek from base camp to summit and back again, due to the amount on snow still on the mountain, making it a much tougher and a longer day at 14 hours in total (itinerary 9-10hrs) to get to the next guest house at 2170m. What an experience though, using crampons for the first time made it even more challenging and for me more enjoyable. Some of the others in this group didn't agree. So be warned, if there is still snow on the mountains, this should really be rated a 6 not a 5, as our guides mentioned. The group was amazing, good humoured and a special bond was created throughout. Guides were great. Food great too, especially when you consider where you are on the mountain and what you eat, incredible really. All in all, I loved it and even more so because it was a bigger challenge than I expected. What next MBA. . . ?

There are moments in life when adventure meets reflection — and climbing Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak at 4,167 metres, was one of them. Setting off from Marrakesh felt almost surreal — trading the heat and bustle of the medina for the cool mountain air of the Atlas Mountains. Our small team — myself, my son Louis, and my stepson Rowan — were about to take on a challenge that was as much mental as physical. From the moment we left Imlil, winding through Berber villages and rocky trails, the landscape was breathtaking. The terrain changed constantly — dusty switchbacks gave way to patches of snow, streams glistened between red-stone ridges, and the air grew thinner with every step. The climb tested us — long, steep ascents, the cold biting at sunrise, and that final push to the summit when every step took focus and determination. But then, as dawn broke, we reached the top. The sun rose over the Atlas, spilling gold across a sea of peaks stretching endlessly in every direction. It wasn’t just a view — it was a feeling: of achievement, of connection, and of gratitude. Standing there with my boys, watching the world wake up from the highest point in North Africa, was something I’ll never forget. None of it would have been possible without the incredible support of our guides, Mustafa and Abdul. Their calm confidence, deep knowledge of the mountain, and good humour kept us motivated and safe every step of the way. They turned a demanding trek into an unforgettable adventure. The descent was long and humbling, passing other climbers just beginning their journey, reminding us how far we’d come. By the time we returned to our accommodation, dusty and tired but grinning from ear to ear, we knew we’d done something truly special. We came to Morocco for an adventure — but left with so much more: memories, perspective, and the quiet satisfaction of knowing we’d stood where earth meets sky. Mount Toubkal, you were unforgettable — and thank you, Mustafa and Abdul, for guiding us there.

This trek was one of the most incredible experiences of my life, and I’m so grateful to our guides, Abdul and Mustafa, and the entire trekking crew who made it happen. When we started off, it quickly became clear to me that I had overestimated my abilities and was struggling to keep up. Abdul and Mustafa worked with me to find a solution that would help me continue. On the day of our summit, they were our cheerleaders the whole way up. I won’t ever forget the song Mustafa made with my name in it to encourage me to keep going. In a word, they were AWESOME. While we didn’t get to know the rest of the crew, I was blown away at what they were able to provide us for meals, even deep in the mountains where neither roads nor cell service could reach us. Our mountain lodgings were rustic in a way that underscored how remote we were. To me, this was all part of the experience, but if you’re a first-time trekker you should be prepared for the refuges to be bare minimum: they’re powered by generators, the bunking situation can get real cozy, and you will be longing for a hot shower. Enjoy your break from technology! By contrast, the lodgings in Marrakech were luxurious, and I would stay there again in a flash. The hosts of our riads were welcoming and made us feel right at home. Finally, I want to spare a minute for our group. As a solo traveler, I was hoping for a group that would be fun to hike with. I didn’t expect the supportive, funny, thoughtful, and all around delightful companions I found. All together, this was a wonderful adventure and I can’t wait for my next one!

I was a bit nervous about this as I was on my own for the first time. I needn't have worried as the group was very friendly and the Berbers are very welcoming. Morocco is just amazing. Marrakech is mental, but at no time did I feel unsafe. We climbed Toubkal over 3 days staying in mountain refuges and a guest house. We were constantly eating, even in the middle of the trek their would be lunch prepared and waiting for us on some high mountain pass. The cooks and guides went beyond the norm and treated us as honoured guests to their country ( we can learn a lot from this). Now to the trek. I'm a regular mountain walker, but this was tough. It was hot and very hard going, but everybody finished. On the last day we left at 4 a. m to summit at dawn, then we returned to the refuge for lunch (7 hours) after lunch we descended to a guest house low in the valley (5 hours). We were all exhausted when we arrived at the beautiful little guest house, where we were welcomed with the obligatory mint tea. So it was tough, but worth it. I lost weight over the 3 days despite constantly eating. The company were fantastic, everything was sorted for us and we were messaged in whats app and had everything explained in great detail. I really and truthfully can't fault this trip. I was super impressed, and am now looking for my next adventure. thank you so much Arnie

Chose this as a tester and it couldn't have been any better. MBA organisation was brilliant, from airport collection to getting to the peak, even when the minibus had a problem and needed changing. Our guides Abdul and Mustafa (the king) were excellent, very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We were well looked after on the mountainside, fed like kings and saw some wonderful sites. Reaching the top is a tough but fully achievable experience. Highly recommend both guides and MBA😀

The trip was fantastic with stunning views and a really friendly group. Our guide, Mustafa, was outstanding. He kept the pace right for everyone, kept us laughing through the tougher parts, and made sure the whole group reached the summit. He truly made the experience special. I’d highly recommend this trip for anyone looking for something rewarding with amazing scenery.

The best of times, the best of groups and the best of guides. Mustafa was compassionate, fun, capable and fully engaged. He created a wonderful space for our group to enjoy this massive challenge. Pacing absolutely perfect for the groups ability and gently supported us all to manage the physical demands and the altitude. The food was superb, the love and laughter flowed and I have come away with a feeling that I will never be quite the same again and in a good way. I hope many others are able to enjoy the challenge in the company of this fantastic team and thank everyone involved from the bottom of my heart for the experience.
  • Great Trip to the Top

    Nicholas R. September 2025
Great trip, professional and organised. Read the advice sheets carefully as they are packed with information. If getting to the top in the best shape and with the most fun these are the crew to go with.
  • Had an amazing experience. Seeing

    Holly B. September 2025
Had an amazing experience. Seeing the sunrise on Mount Toubkal is really magical and the guiding team were very friendly and respectful. A few things I think it would be good to know if you want to go on the trip: - bring more for tips than it says on the guide. Think we ended up doing 600 MAD not 300 as it says. - bring your own emergency snacks to get you through and bring two water bottles. I had one big water bottle and a camel back which worked well. You will get water refills at the lunch/dinner spots but not through out the day. - if you have food allergies, the food is great but it’s not that clear whether the guides actually know about the allergies in advance so make sure to communicate that to them direct. - I didn’t bring a waterproof cover for my day bag, which was a mistake in the thunderstorm on day 1! - the climb was very doable for me but I wouldn’t recommend signing up if you haven’t done some solid hiking trips before. All in all amazing experience!
  • Toubkal 5 days

    Tim July 2025
Incredible. Organisation, comms and execution of the plan were faultless. Our guide was one of the best humans I’ve ever met.
  • Challenging hike, excellent guides, punishing descent

    Catherine D. June 2025
I hiked the Inca trail last year but found Mount Toubkal more challenging. (I am 57, walk my dog a lot but do not regularly go hill walking - for context). The guides were excellent and I would never have made it to the summit without Zaid's encouragement. Unfortunately there was a wide difference within our group - some people wanted to race ahead and others had a slower pace, which lead to some hostility. I found the third day the most difficult, especially the descent from the summit as the terrain is extremely slippery. At least four of us fell over. It didn't help that the final descent from the refuge to the village for our last night's accommodation was made in the pouring rain, but the scenery was lovely. It was cold and windy at the top - make sure you pack warm gloves etc, even in the summer months. Three people in our group had asthma; two of them chose not to make the final ascent. I would advise bringing trekking poles with you or hiring them at the start of the walk. There is no way that I could have managed the descent without poles. Accommodation is in mixed dorms and very basic. It is possible to pay for a private room. At the second refuge this is extremely expensive!
  • Unforgettable and authentic experience

    Veronika C. June 2025
I couldn't have asked more from this trip! It was smooth from start to finish with just the right amount of information and easy communication throughout. Our two local guides were likely the best guides I have come across on all my trips - knowledgeable, super caring, accommodating, and nothing wasn't a problem for them. The food was great and again, all sorts of requests were catered for - vegetarians, gluten free, nut allergy, etc. And the hikes? Absolutely awesome, carefully planned and manageable for a regularly fit person. Highly recommended!
  • One of my best trips ever

    James W. June 2025
Immaculate planning, great food, character rich accommodation, stunning hikes and some of the most friendliest people you’ll ever meet. Especially the hike guides, truly first class individuals in every possible way and deserve the highest praise possible. Will be returning to do more :)
  • Amazing trip

    Leena June 2025
Superb hiking trail, wonderful guides and rest of the group looking after us! Views during the hike are amazing and definitely worth every step taken during journey up to the mt. Toubkal! We had really nice food and the mountain refuges were better than I expected. The trail is challenging so ensure you have hiking experience before joining this trip!
  • Tough, good guide, shame about (some of) the group

    Amanda H. June 2025
If you join a group activity like this, then fortunately or unfortunately you need to go at the pace of the slowest person. But this was not the case & I felt rushed & unable to enjoy the trek. Zaid was a great guide & very patient. Unlike some of the other trekkers. Riad was good as was guest house in Imlil. If people sign up, they are signing up for a group activity & as Mohammed said, we are family now, except we had a few stroppy step children with us!
  • An incredible experience!

    Jennifer W. June 2025
This was such an incredible experience - the views, food and team were all 10/10! Summiting Toubkal for sunrise was stunning and worth the (very) early alarm 😍 Our guides, Ahmed and Lahcin, were fantastic!! They were knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic - always making sure everyone in the group was OK. A big thanks to them for making the hike as good as it was! We also booked 2 extra nights in Marrakech at the end of the trip and this was so easy to do through Much Better Adventures meaning we didn't have to book different accommodation. If you have time I'd recommend spending a few days exploring Marrakech. Thank you to the whole team - we'll definitely be looking at other adventures to book in the future!
  • June 2025 Lads Adventure

    Michael J. June 2025
What can I say—this was hands down the best mountain experience I’ve ever had! It was tough at times, but our guide, Mohammed, was absolutely incredible—supportive, knowledgeable, and always ready to help from start to finish. The food was also a highlight, freshly prepared by the amazing muleteers’ mountain team. If you’re looking for a different kind of adventure, I’d highly recommend this trip. Truly unforgettable!
  • Superb performance from you guys

    Mateusz T. May 2025
    Superb performance from you guys
  • Brilliant way to spend a week!

    Benjamin L. May 2025
This trip was perfect! We had a day either side to explore Marrakech, which you could absolutely extend if you wanted to but was fine for me. The trip itself was well organised in terms of timings and meals etc. (great food by the way), our guides were phenomenal - accommodating, friendly, funny - and the demands of the trip were fine for people who are decently fit. If you are happy with waking up early for a couple of days and having a cold shower then there's not much to complain about with this trip. Good food, good people, great place, experiencing a different culture. Perfecto.
  • Perfect first international/high altitude climb

    George N. May 2025
The perfect introductory climb for those who have never climbed outside of the UK or at high altitude like myself. The longer ascent meant that very few people in my group got altitude sickness and allowed us to see even more amazing Atlas mountains views. The guides were knowledgable and always ready to help. The entire holiday was organised flawlessly - everything was taken care of from the moment my plane touched down. Can't recommend enough!
  • Excellent guides and lovely landscape.

    Lynn May 2025
Excellent guides and lovely landscape. Boots essential so buy in plenty of time to break in if you don’t already have a pair.
  • The Content Is Perfectly Planned

    Russell H. May 2025
We looked at the itineraries and reviews for a few options before booking with Much Better Adventures, and were very glad we did. They were easy to ask questions of before the journey, and kept us well informed of the plan details immediately before and during the trip. The balance of down time versus the actual hiking was spot on, and the guides were superb at judging the group. The scenery was stunning and the accommodation, food and people were all as good as you could wish for . For anyone other than an experienced climber, I would say that it is a strong physical challenge and an achievement to be proud of. I will definitely be looking for more holidays in the future with Much Better Adventures.

    Rachael November 2023
I went on the mount Toubkal trip in September when the earthquake hit. The company was very organised, friendly and efficient. Unfortunately we didn't get to summit due to it not being safe. The guide Mohamed and his team looked after us so well and I can't thank them enough. They still looked after us , cooked us every meal and gave us a place to stay when they didn't even know if their own family's were alive. Apart from the earthquakes the trip was great as we got to hike with beautiful scenery and had an amazing team. I will be there next year to summit! 🙌

    Kieron May 2023
Fantastic trip, if your thinking about doing this trip then I could t recommend it enough. From when you land to when you finish is organised faultlessly. Hosts and guides are welcoming and work there socks flof to accommodate l. Food was lovely, there is also plenty of food is enough to have 3 plates full at each meal. The climb is high to the mountain but the route is gradual, IE alot of zig zagging to gain height. The last day is the toughest out of the 3 but well worth it. The accommodation on the mountain Had alot more facilities than I expected, shower and power for charging,

FAQs

Absolutely! We recognise that you may want to leave some of the kit you bring to Morocco somewhere safe before you start your ascent of Toubkal. When you reach Imlil, you will be able to leave any non-essential items you don’t want to take up on the hike with you at your local guide's base there.

You will be provided with safe drinking water while on the mountain. You should bring a couple of water bottles or a flask to fill up with water (or mint tea) from the refuges.

Your host works with muleteers who collaborate with local charity, Spana, (The Society for the Protection of Animals and Nature) on the AMI program (Aid to the Mules of Imlil). The charity provides training, guidance and incentives to mule owners to encourage and support good care for their animals in all aspects of their working lives. The program also provides a monthly clinic which offers free veterinary care to the animals and the distribution of humane tack.

Ramadan is expected to take place from 17th February to 19th March 2026. The national holiday of Eid ul-Fitr will follow for 2-3 days. Ramadan is an Islamic festival where the religious do not eat or drink during daylight hours. While this is a really interesting time to travel, especially to witness celebrations where the fast is broken in the evenings, you can expect some business hours will be shortened, alcohol is not permitted during daylight hours and some restaurants will be closed during this festival period. Activities for local people tend to be limited during the day and the nights are very active in cities with lots of different foods being sold and consumed. Ramadan will not affect the inclusions on your trip, although you should be aware that dinners will be served after locals break their fast in the evenings.

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

This trip includes locations where temperatures can range from extremely hot to extremely cold during different parts of the itinerary. In some areas, you may face high daytime temperatures, strong sun, and humidity with limited shade. Elsewhere – especially at higher elevations – temperatures may drop below freezing, particularly at night.

These extremes can affect your physical performance and increase the risk of heat-related issues such as dehydration or heat stroke, or cold-related risks like frostbite and hypothermia. Your guide will manage the pace, monitor group wellbeing, and adjust the plan when needed to keep everyone safe.

We recommend considering how you personally respond to heat and cold, and speaking with a healthcare professional if you have any conditions that could be affected. Packing the right gear for both climates is essential, and arriving early may help your body acclimatise more comfortably – especially if you're coming from a more moderate climate.

Spring and autumn temperatures in Marrakech average 10-25°C, and it rains a small amount (roughly seven days each month). From June to September it gets quite hot in the city, averaging 15-35°C, and it only rains a few days each month. In the height of summer, daytime temperatures in Marrakech have been known to approach 45°C on occasion – so please ensure that you come prepared with sun protection, light and airy clothing and electrolytes/rehydration solutions if travelling at this time of year.

In the Atlas Mountains, from March to October daytime temperatures average 25-30°C but it cools off considerably at night, and the higher you go the colder it gets (you may even need gloves on a summit day in August!) Night time temperatures can drop below freezing at and above the mountain refuge. Afternoon storms are always possible, but they are usually quick and generally don’t prevent anyone from enjoying the trek.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 126kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
