Trip level explained

Level 7

Tough

This trek requires a very good level of fitness.

As this trip takes place during the winter, you must be capable of hiking all day up paths of moderate difficulty and be prepared to face rain, snow and high winds. During the lower parts of this trek, the walking is relatively straightforward, but the loose footing and high altitude will make the going quite difficult in parts. You should pack enough personal food and snacks to power you through 3 full days of hiking at altitude. Towards the summit, you will encounter steep snowy sections where crampons and ice axes will be required; Your guides will give you a full safety briefing on how to use these. However difficult it gets, the views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile. On any winter hike in a high mountain environment, you will potentially encounter high winds, rain, snow, ice and steep slopes. The Atlas Mountains are no different and you should be experienced and prepared to face these conditions. For the higher parts of the trek, you will use crampons and have an ice axe to hand.

What will I need to carry?

Mules will carry your main overnight luggage during the trek and you will need to carry your daypack with your daytime essentials (extra layer, snacks, water etc.). For the welfare of the mules, please ensure your main overnight luggage is in a soft-sided bag and weighs no more than 15kg.

High Altitude Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m. At this altitude some people may experience symptoms associated with Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Previous experience at high altitude is not necessarily an indicator of future performance. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with altitude by carefully managing the rate of ascent and the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided. Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover up to the maximum altitude visited on this trip as well as emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

Climate Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely cold and consistently below freezing (0C/32F) during the times of year when this trip operates. Temperatures at night will likely be even colder. Personal care should be taken to keep as warm as possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration and nutrition. Very cold temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at warmer temperatures. In severe cold conditions people may experience symptoms associated with Exposure, Frostbite and Hypothermia. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with cold temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

Fantastic trip from beginning to end and great value for money. It was everything I expected and more. For me this was a test at altitude before I try some bigger mountains and it has helped alleviate some of my concern over how my body would adapt. I think the acclimatisation day was useful. Some other groups came up late afternoon the day prior and set off to summit with us, a number of them looked to be struggling and were still heading up as we were on the way back down. The group dynamics were great and the pacing was adapted so everyone made the summit. It also helped we were blessed by the weather gods with clear skies for 2 days in the absolutely stunning mountains. Food was plentiful and the refuge was better than expected, but it was really busy on the 2nd night with other groups. Our group had a dorm to ourselves which worked well and gave us some peace later on. I took what was on the kit list and found it to be plenty but if you get cold easily you may need a few more layers depending on the weather. I really enjoyed Marrakesh and would recommended taking a day or two to explore here as well.

From airport pickup, Riad accommodation & hiking guides, the whole trip was seamless. It was very great having the acclimatization day to get used to the crampons but also to get refueled & rested before summit day. The guides were both knowledgeable & patient . I would travel with MBA again.

An excellent experience for all grades of hiker very well run well organised lots of care and attention and detail genuinely could not fault the experience

  • Frances L.

The trip was exactly as described. The refuge was austere, cold and cramped in comparison to European refuges but served it's purpose in an amazing location. The guides were excellent, kind, patient, experienced and got everyone to the summit.

Winter on Mount Toubkal is definitely a challenge, but that’s part of what makes the trip so rewarding. The guides from Aztat Treks were welcoming, supportive and clearly very experienced, creating a great atmosphere within the group. They struck the right balance of encouraging and understanding when I was too affected by altitude to make the summit push. Vegetarian food was always catered for and I never felt like an afterthought at mealtimes. The refuge is basic, as you’d expect in the mountains, but the transfers and riad accommodation were all smooth, clean and comfortable. One improvement would be a bit more discussion around kit requirements before setting out each day, particularly in winter conditions. Overall, a brilliant and memorable adventure with a fantastic local team.

Amazing experience and well organised! All the guides are great and super nice.

Always a bit daunting to book as a solo traveller but so glad I did. Starting from the airport collection everything went smoothly and very well run. Fellow adventurers were great , with many travelling solo, accomodation at both locations was really good, food was excellent and our guides for the trip were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful throughout trip. Guides had the experience to change the summit day due to predicted weather conditions and I think everybody agreed this was a good call. Would highly recommend this trip 👍 Our guides were observing Ramadan during this trip which appeared to make no difference to participants as they were happy to discuss this, serve us food and water and climb the mountain all with a smile and helpful attitude, credit to them.

Overall we’ve had a great time in the Atlas Mountains - mainly driven by the excellent team of participants from around the world and stunning scenery. The actual organisation wasn’t brilliant - no kit check before we took off, the guides were not very interested in the group (they didn’t know any of our names after 3 days together non-stop), and when they had to evacuate one of our team members, we lost two guides and were left with one guide to do the summit day as a team of 10. Evacuation takes priority, but this must happen quite often and they need to be prepared to have other guides join. A ration of 10:1 is not good enough.

  • Anna O.

I liked the nature and the climb was not difficult. Guides were good but they could have engaged a bit more. Heads up - you are sleeping in a lodge with 10 plus people in one room and there is no electricity for half a day. It was a good adventure overall.

It was my first time time with MBA, and it was amazing. I am used to travelling in groups for hikes abroad. You will meet like-minded people and we all support each other's during the hikes. Everything was carefully organized, and I found the hike suiting my expectations.

  • A tough but rewarding trip

    Andrew R. March 2026
A fantastic experience starting with a pleasant night in a quiet, well-run riad. The next day we met the guides, who took us up to the refuge. They were brilliant, assessed the group, and suggested we summit Toubkal the next day rather than on day 3. This was a very good decision because it gave us more time for the tough climb to the top. The refuge is basic but clean and the food was excellent. It’s also the first trip I’ve been on where hair straighteners have been used - respect. Great group, lots of fun and a real sense of achievement. Wish we could have stayed longer.
  • Incredible Trip!

    Jack K. February 2026
A truly once in a lifetime trip! Everyone on the staff was amazing, with particular praise for Mustafa who went above and beyond to help us. The food also was 11/10 - sometimes in mountain huts the food can be bad but this was not the case here, everything was fresh and tasty and there was loads of it. The trip itself was perfect and well planned, and its something our group will be talking about for ages. If you are fit enough i would highly recommend this one!

  • An unforgettable Mount Toubkal summit!

    Andrew P. February 2026
We had an absolute blast on our Mount Toubkal summit. The hosts were fantastic and the whole adventure was extremely well planned from start to finish. Our guides were all brilliant — very approachable and couldn’t do enough to make sure we were well looked after at all times. Accommodation was A1 throughout, the food was perfect, and everywhere we went we were made to feel genuinely welcome. It was an amazing experience all round, and we would definitely use Much Better Adventures again.

  • Great trip

    Christopher J. January 2026
Just back in Marrakech after the long weekend in the Atlas Mountains, enjoying a well earned Hammam. Our guides Mohammed and Abdul were the best and made sure our group were all looked after. The avalanche near Toubkal a week or so ago, plus the 80kmph winds made Toubkal impossible so we climbed alternative peaks (2400m and 2700m) instead, returning to accommodation in the valleys in between. Food was great, mountain picnics amazing in the sun and minus 6C in blizzards was such a contrast. It’s cold at night so get tucked in under those blankets! You will feel at ease as a solo or group traveller, everyone is there for the adventure just like you.
  • Solid Trip

  • Epic adventure in the Atlas Mountains!

    Joshua G. January 2026
This was my third MBA adventure, and once again, it was absolutely amazing. Every trip I’ve done with this team has been exceptionally well organized, professionally staffed, and intentionally designed from start to finish. They truly take care of everything. The route to the summit was clearly laid out and well planned, and we stayed at the refuge for two nights. While the refuge itself is very basic, it serves its purpose well. The food was simple, filling, and exactly what you need at altitude. Mohammed and the entire adventure team were thoughtful, attentive, and incredibly helpful throughout the experience. One critical part of the overall experience happens before the climb: the Medina in Marrakesh. That place is an experience…and a controlled chaos, all on its own. I highly recommend arriving a day or two early to fully take it in. From snake charmers and street vendors to incredible food and nonstop energy, it’s a full immersion into Moroccan culture and well worth the extra time. This is a fantastic beginner 4,000-meter adventure for anyone looking to start their journey into the mountains. You get a true mix of terrain - rock, snow, and high altitude, all set in stunning mountain scenery. If you’re curious whether high mountain trekking is for you, this is an excellent way to find out. Coming from the United States, I found this trip to be an exceptional value for the price, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Everything was excellent - from the guides (absolute ninjas) to the cooks (I'm still trying to replicate their berber omelette), the muleteers, drivers and riad staff - all work together like a well oiled machine. Met an awesome group of people and enjoyed every step.
  • Amazing trip very well organised

    Imogen E. January 2026
Genuinely can’t fault much better adventures and all the team on the ground in Morocco. We were due to summit Toubkal but the government closed the way to base camp due to the weather. The guides were so quick to make a plan to ensure we had somewhere to sleep, food, and still got to experience the mountains. Communication before and during the trip was faultless and everything ran so smoothly. Was so nice to go on holiday and not have to think or worry about plans. A really amazing experience made better by such fab organisation, will defo be booking through much better adventures again!
  • A physical challenge with phenomenal views

    James S. December 2025
The trip is labelled tough and in the underfoot conditions we had, it certainly was. There had been lots of snow fall between Imlil and the refuge the day or so before our first hike and the snow was at times hip deep. This made the walk extremely exhausting and took us 7. 5 hours to get to the refuge. We summited the next day as the idea of walking back to Imlil on the third day after the scheduled summit was far beyond ambitious. Summit took us around 7 hours due to the deep snow. You need walking poles, even if like us you would never normally go near them. The refuge was simultaneously more than we thought it would be and at the same time very basic. Frankly after the walk we had to get there, four walls, a roof and roaring fire and we couldn’t be happier. We were all suffering to some degree with altitude issues as the speed at which you go from Marrakech to refuge is a lot to take on. Take rehydration tablets and plenty of sugary snacks. We burned 5000 calories that day so don’t feel bad scoffing fruit pastels. The guides and porters did a cracking job and while the food was basic, we didn’t have to carry it all on our backs, so can entirely forgive them for a limited choice. Overall we would highly recommend the trip but you must be prepared. Good kit and fitness is a must. Make sure if you get a clear night, go out and look at the stars.
  • Winter Summit in the Atlas Mts

    Jaime M. December 2025
Fantastic trip in the Atlas mountains, both to reach the summit, the super people I met in the trekking group, and the guides themselves who were in good form every day and very helpful + supportive. They also didn't rush people, which is important when most people on this trip had minimal or no experience over 3000 metres. The Riad staff were also very nice. A great cultural and mountain experience. Thank you !
  • Incredible

    Matthew B. December 2025
I haven't done any mountain climbing before but have a decent level of fitness and this was indeed a challenge! The trip was very well organised and ran without a hitch. The riad was comfortable, the breakfast was great and the staff were faultless. The walk up to the refuge was slow but deliberately paced and gave us a chance to take in the scenery and get to know the rest of the group. The refuge was not for the faint hearted but added to the experience. Don't expect to get much sleep! However, the food was decent and plentiful. The acclimatisation day was great with a bit of a trek and learning crampon and ice axe skills. The summit day was incredible! Breakfast at 4am, started out at 5am half an hour or so behind 1 other group. Although all concentration goes into the climbing, take a moment to appreciate the view back down seeing other groups with headtorches acending below. It had snowed heavy all day the previous day so the snow was deep and the going at points was very challenging. Everyone had to dig deep! The group ahead of us turned around about 2/3rds up but we pushed on making fresh tracks and made the summit with an outstanding sunrise. Our guides, Samir, Muhammad and Said were second to none. They were always cheerful, helpful and most importantly encouraging and they were the reason we made it up. What a credit to the company! We all made it down safe, back to the riad and out for a meal and some well earned drinks with a fantastic group of people. I'm now knackered but very thankful for the experience.

One of the best trips I have ever been on - beautiful walking with a fantastic group of people and incredible value for money. Everything from arriving at the airport was sorted on our arrival allowing us to focus on the walking. I'll definitely be back on another trip.
  • Amazing Adventure!

  • WOW!! What an amazing experience!

What an experience!! A great trip from the start, easy pick up from the airport to raid viewpoint which was traditional & comfortable, with a good breakfast & helpful staff. The trek from Imlil village to the refuge was good with a few stops along the way, the oranges at the first stop were the best we’ve ever tasted & definitely worth buying. The pace is set by the guides which seemed painfully slow at times but feel this may of been deliberate with gaining altitude & may depend on the overall group. The pace on all the stages is set by the guides & this was the only 1 that felt slow. There was no need for winter boot for this section & could have used normal boots on the first day if you had them, the path had much more loose stones/rocks than I was expecting considering the mules go up & down this so I’d still say ankle support is beneficial. The refuge itself definitely isn’t for those who like their own space & the toilets aren’t for the faint hearted but it is what it is. Think probably better in winter & could imagine it being crowded in the summer. It is cold too apart from where you eat & the fire is on for evening meals, the chefs provided good food that was plentiful. Acclimatisation day was fun learning how to walk in crampons & use the ice axes by sliding down a small slope, much giggling was had between the group. It was a steep climb in some parts but worth the effort. Really think this is a super beneficial day before tackling the summit, think more would have struggled if this was missed. We did speak to other groups who didn’t have this & didn’t manage to summit due to altitude sickness so think this is a must. Summit day!! It’s an early start & we set off into the dark with head torches on, you can see all the different groups ascending the mountain in packs. You don’t realise quite how steep you’re climbing as it’s so dark. But oh how cold it was further up, the wind cut right through you, Iv never been so cold!! Yet we were extremely lucky with the weather throughout the trip with clear skies & views, it could have been a lot worse if the weather turned. There was one person in our group who had made a return as didn’t manage to summit previously due to weather so think we were really lucky. My other half Dave really struggled with the summit climb, probably a combination of having type 1 diabetes & the altitude but he made it with a huge help from the guides, special shout out to Samir & his colleague who couldn’t of been any more patient, helpful, encouraging & understanding, we are forever grateful. Very emotional when reaching the summit. WOW what a view, just incredible!! The trek back off the summit where you can now see all around as the suns up, it’s just breathtakingly beautiful & I’m sure I was smiling the whole way. This is definitely a good company to book through as there was people on the summit who had lost their guides somehow & were not dressed for the conditions or even carrying extra kit if the weather turned, which was rather worrying. Our guides even said they were braking the rules, so chose who you book through wisely. Overall an amazing experience with a great group of people. All four of our guides were fantastic from start to finish. The full team from the chefs, muleteers, drives, raid staff & guides are a credit to the company & couldn’t have been any more accommodating or helpful. Once again an amazing experience & well worth doing.
  • Truly amazing adventure

Really amazing adventure with the most amazing guides at Mt Toubkal! It was tough, as expected, but from the start the guides made us feel at ease with comfortable pace, and the acclimatisation day really made us more comfortable with crampon and ice axe especially those of us who have never used that before. The refuge was personally the most luxurious accommodation I've ever had while climbing on a mountain, it got beds, pillow, heating and hot water on! We got lucky with the weather throughout, and all of us in the group made it to the summit and back. Great dynamic with the group too, feel like we've made friends along the way. Huge thank you to the guides and all the group who took such great care of us all the way!

FAQs

You will be provided with safe drinking water whilst on the mountain. We recommend you bring a flask to fill up with hot water (or mint tea!) at the refuge each mornin, it will help to keep you warm while trekking through the snow and ice later.

Absolutely! We recognise that you may want to leave some of the kit you bring to Morocco somewhere safe before you start your ascent of Toubkal. When you reach Imlil, you will be able to leave any non-essential items you don’t want to take up on the hike with you at your local guides base there.

Your host works with muleteers who collaborate with local charity, Spana, (The Society for the Protection of Animals and Nature) on the AMI program (Aid to the Mules of Imlil). The charity provides training, guidance and incentives to mule owners to encourage and support good care for their animals in all aspects of their working lives. The program also provides a monthly clinic which offers free veterinary care to the animals and the distribution of humane tack.

Your guides are from the local Berber community in the Atlas Mountains and have spent their whole lives hiking these slopes. They will guide you up the main path towards the Toubkal Refuge and use their experience and knowledge to safely navigate you up the steep snowy slopes to the summit. They will decide the best day to attempt the summit and make all decisions based on conditions at the time. You should follow your guide’s advice at all times. You’ll also be accompanied by a support team of muleteers and mules to prepare your meals and carry heavy bags.

Ramadan is expected to take place from 17th February to 19th March 2026. The national holiday of Eid ul-Fitr will follow for 2-3 days. Ramadan is an Islamic festival where the religious do not eat or drink during daylight hours. While this is a really interesting time to travel, especially to witness celebrations where the fast is broken in the evenings, you can expect some business hours will be shortened, alcohol is not permitted during daylight hours and some restaurants will be closed during this festival period. Activities for local people tend to be limited during the day and the nights are very active in cities with lots of different foods being sold and consumed. Ramadan will not affect the inclusions on your trip, although you should be aware that dinners will be served after locals break their fast in the evenings.

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

This trip includes locations or elevations where conditions can be extremely cold. Daytime temperatures may drop below freezing (0°C/32°F), and nights are often significantly colder. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of exposure-related issues, such as frostbite or hypothermia.

Your guide is trained to manage these risks, adapting activity intensity and monitoring group wellbeing. However, it's important to take personal responsibility – bringing the right cold-weather gear (see Kit List), staying hydrated and well-nourished, and recognising early signs of cold stress.

We recommend assessing your personal comfort and resilience in cold environments, and consulting a medical professional if you have health conditions that may be affected. Arriving early can also help you acclimatise to the colder conditions, especially if you're coming from a much warmer climate.

January, February and March are the best months to do winter treks in the Atlas Mountains. January sees the lowest temperatures - average 6 °C throughout the month - but it's still pleasant for hiking.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 221kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
