    Head into the Finnish wilderness and settle into a cabin in the woods, where your guide will lay out the plan for the next few days. After a welcome dinner with your fellow adventurers, wrap up well and head outside in search of the spectacular aurora borealis. Your guides will bring tripods along and teach you how to successfully photograph the Northern Lights in all their glory.

    Trek and snowshoe the Pyhä-Luosto National Park

    Clip on your snowshoes and hike out into the Pyhä-Luosto National Park - a snowy wilderness of frozen valleys, ravines and tunturis, the remnants of 2 billion-year-old mountains. Take a break around midday for a campfire lunch and then return to the cabin to warm up. In the afternoon, you’ll try your hand at ice climbing and learn how to use axes and crampons to successfully ascend a frozen waterfall. Back at the cabin, you’ll pack for tomorrow’s adventure before unwinding in a steaming hot sauna. Don’t forget to check outside for the aurora.

    Wake up early and drive to the Korouoma Canyon, one of the top climbing destinations in Lapland, where you’ll face off against the highest ice wall in the country. Spend the day honing your skills on the high quality ice at Charlie Brown and Mammoth until you’re climbing like a natural. In the afternoon you’ll hike across a landscape of frozen creeks and thick evergreen forest searching for animal tracks in the fresh snow. You’ll learn tips on how to build a fire in the arctic and then undertake a truly Finnish experience, as your guide cuts a hole through the lake ice so you can take a ‘refreshing’ dip before heating up in the nearby sauna!

Detailed Logistics

Transfers

Round-trip airport transfers on the SkiBus are included (or you can upgrade to a private transfer, see Optional Extras below). From Rovaniemi Airport (RVN), board the SkiBus to its last stop in Pyhä where your guides will meet you. The SkiBus travels between the airport and Pyhä several times a day and the journey takes around two hours. Check the current timetable – you'll need to catch the 18:05 bus at the latest on Day 1.

There are regular flights to Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) from major airports across the UK and Europe. There may not always be direct flights on all departure start/end dates, but if you can spare an extra day, it's worth checking for direct flight schedules a day on either side. Should you wish to book additional nights' accommodation at your host's lodge in Pyhä before or after the trip, please request this via your booking: see Optional Extras for prices.

You'll spend three nights in a rustic wooden lodge in the woods – the genuine Lapland way! Located in the heart of Pyhä, it's close to a shop, restaurants and the bus stop, yet the Pyhä-Luosto National Park trailheads are just 350m away. After a day of Arctic adventures, it is blissful to step into the cosy ambience and enjoy a roaring fire and relax in the sauna. The spacious lodge has seven bedrooms which you'll stay in on a twin-share basis (these can be set up as double rooms on request). The lodge is equipped with several drying cabinets, heating, TV, and WiFi. The kitchen facilities include a stove, fridge, freezer, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, water boiler, tableware and utensils. A nutritious buffet breakfast will be available to keep you fuelled. With its classic cabin design, the lodge has shared bathroom facilities with four toilets and three showers available to use, as well as its own sauna and changing room. There is also a communal lounge area to relax in, with comfy sofas to sink into after a day of adventure.

On occasion, a different lodge of a similar standard may be used depending on availability.

To enjoy the snowshoeing and ice climbing a basic level of fitness is needed, however no previous experience is required.

Ice climbing is the sport of climbing up ice walls with the aid of equipment like ice axes and crampons. Like rock climbing, you have a harness, rope and belayer to prevent you from falling. Unlike rock climbing, however, you can use your tools to carve hand and footholds wherever you need them. Also, ice climbing is not as arm-intensive at it looks. Your guides will show you how to do most of the climbing with your legs. The climbs you'll be tackling are graded as 'Water Ice' grades WI2 to WI4.

The climbing will keep you warm on the wall, and while you’re down at the base your guides will provide you with puffy down jackets and hot drinks to keep warm.

What will I need to carry?

You'll only need to carry a small daypack containing personal items during the hiking and snowshoeing activities.

Climate Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely cold and consistently below freezing (0C/32F) during the times of year when this trip operates. Temperatures at night will likely be even colder. Personal care should be taken to keep as warm as possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration and nutrition. Very cold temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at warmer temperatures. In severe cold conditions people may experience symptoms associated with Exposure, Frostbite and Hypothermia. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with cold temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

There was a sauna with towels provided at the lodge. We were treated to Lappish food for meals which felt very homey and comforting. The guides were amazing - all passionate about Finland and outdoor activities whilst really going above and beyond to keep you properly dressed and having a good time. I massively over packed - all you really need is two good merino wool base tops, merino wool leggings, a polyester fleece and shell trousers, and two merino wool socks, a hat and a neck warmer. I hired the onsie which was so warm and well fitting, and the snow mittens were perfect. There is also a shop round the corner. The hand and feet warmers were useful. The ice climbing is fun, challenging but doable and very safe. I loved the snow walking and hiking - the scenery is spectacular. Whilst it was -27, I never once felt cold. Highlight for me was seeing the lights and the cold plunge in the frozen lake. Food was also plentiful and delicious and the cabin you stay in is spacious, warm and has a sauna. Highly recommend this trip!

The guides were great and very understanding, big shout out to Joonatan and Kalev who were with us from when we arrived at the airport to when we were leaving.     What an incredible life experience! Finland and the area in which we stayed in phya was absolutely astounding, I felt like I was on a film set from the moment of arrival. The wooden log cabin is a really well laid out communal living space. The showers and sauna are all in the same space, although set times for men, women and unisex were given. The beds were really comfortable and it has a beautiful traditional feel. We had two of the team members Kalev and Joonatan with us from breakfast till bed time and they were great, really knowledgeable and helpful friendly guys, we also had a few other instructors for the climbs who were also absolutely brilliant. We were lucky to have a lucky group, with some really fun, like minded people. My husband and I were the only couple but MBA really work for everyone! The snow shoeing and ice climbing were AWESOME!! I’m not a fan of heights but the team were absolutely brilliant instructors, so supportive! Each time I went up the instructors nicely but firmly encouraged me to keep going even when I wanted to give up, which I was really really pleased with after! Such a buzz!! The sauna and ice dip were so relaxing and exhilarating at the same time!! All the food was fantastic!! Book this trip, if you want to experience artic sports and outdoor activities with the support and guidance of a brilliant team with quality gear and abundance of knowledge!!! My advice, book day either side if you can as there are so many other things to do in area. Practical kit advice, layers!! Glove liners but not the really skinny ones and really thick mittens, we bought artic gloves but the independent finger thing doesn’t work at -30!!! Also your face coverings will freeze with your breath so have a couple of fresh ones. Thanks again to the bliss team and much better adventures you have organised another great trip! This was our second and now looking to book our third!!

    What an unforgettable, inspiring trip. The whole team were fantastic, knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely passionate about what they do. One of the biggest highlights for me was meeting such an amazing group of people, which really made the experience special. The instructors were excellent throughout and created such a supportive environment, especially during the ice climbing. They took time to go over technique, encouraged everyone, and it was amazing to see your own confidence grow, as well as everyone else’s. At Korouoma Canyon, the guides took the initiative to split the group in two, with half ice climbing while the others hiked and explored the area. It kept everyone warm, active, and engaged, which i definitely think they should implement in every trip! The accommodation was cosy and comfortable, and they catered brilliantly for me as a vegetarian, the food was genuinely great! This truly felt like a once in a lifetime time experience. I’d return in a heartbeat and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

    Wow. What a trip! Prior to this, I had never experienced a “winter holiday” - so, if you have any concerns about how you will do in the snow and ice, do not let it put you off. The team of guides are incredibly knowledgeable and take very good care in making sure you are well equipped and aware of your environment. I completely trusted Reidar and Sergi as our guides and they fit into our group very well, enjoying banter and communicating very easily. They had a massive positive impact on the running of the trip and enhancing experiences! Especially suggesting that we go on a hike when waiting to exchange turns at ice climbing in the canyon - the experience of running through the winter wonderland will not be forgotten. The ice climbing itself is not so difficult and can be managed for a range of abilities. Just be sure to prepare your equipment properly - the packing list suggests Merino wool for very good reason ;) Logistics were all well considered and executed, with very clear instructions. I’ve come away with many new friends & future adventures - truly an unforgettable trip with the highest praises to the team involved. Thoroughly enjoyed their passion for what they do, and teachings of Finnish traditions/culture - especially Sauna & ice plunges! (Seeing the Northern lights was a cool bonus, but the group of people was definitely the highlight)

    Wow. What an incredible trip! Signing up, I expected simply to try my hand at a new experience - I did not expect to walk away with my ribs hurting from laughing so much and a new outlook on life from the positive and collaborative group I got to form friendships with! I discovered a love for snow and ice that I hadn’t previously realised, now actively seeking out more arctic inspired adventures! The guides became friends to us too, providing expert technical guidance but also joining our banter and personalising the experience for our group dynamic. Safe to say, they were the best guides I have come across in any trip so far and I would return in a heartbeat. During the ice climb in Kourouma Canyon, they took the initiative to change up the activities a bit and encouraged half of the group waiting to climb to go hiking and explore the surrounding area. It was a joy to discover more of the beautiful scenery, challenge ourselves with the hiking, stay warm and to even run through the snowy landscape. A winter wonderland.     The whole trip was awesome. Reidar and the rest of the team were professional, caring and really looked after us. Reidar especially was really passionate about his job and country and at times I needed some reassurance and I got it. Without him I'm not sure I'd have succeeded to the same level and for that I'm grateful. The lodge is beautiful. There's shared showers etc and I found it hard to sleep due to the set up but I'm a light sleeper. We had food cooked for us which was amazing and even lunches were cooked on outdoor firepits! The activities were great and you can hire kit if you don't have it so don't worry about buying loads of winter outwear. Good baselayers, gloves and wool/merino is essential but again there are shops if you need to buy there just might be cheaper in UK. It's a tough few days but the reward is you get to experience some amazing activities in the most stunning surroundings. Topping it off with the northern lights! I would recommend this trip you won't be disappointed.

    Beautiful Lapland, an absolutely magical winter landscape. I travelled in December, and it was fun to experience the very short days — only about four hours of daylight, where the sun just popped up to say hello… and then disappeared again. Ice climbing was — surprisingly — really fun. I hadn’t expected that and was probably a bit sceptical about that activity in particular. The sauna and ice bath were also a great experience — I honestly didn’t think I’d be able to get into the freezing water, but I did it! Three times 😄 I felt the group was a bit on the large side — 12 people — and I didn’t quite get the chance to talk to everyone. The guides were fantastic, all of them so kind. You really get a wonderful impression of Finland and the Finnish people — such a lovely nation. Kiitos ❤️

    I had so much fun learning to ice climb. I think it’s particularly special as there aren’t that many places in the world where you can do it. I also found the ice plunge and sauna to be an amazing new experience that I enjoyed a lot, even though I kind of thought I might hate it 😅. Drinking hot berry juice under the Aurora Borealis was magical. I really loved learning about the forest plants and animals and local geology while snowshoeing, followed by delicious lunch by the fire. The staff at Bliss Adventures were so welcoming, knowledgable and fun, I can’t speak highly enough of them. The lodge accommodation was comfortable and homey, it’s very new and has important additions like a washing machine and its own sauna! I can’t recommend this trip highly enough!

    Brilliant trip here! Amazing guides (Inessa and Jeppe) who couldn't do enough for us, properly knew their stuff and were just great to chat to. The highlights for me were seeing the auroras, climbing the frozen waterfalls and finishing off with a dip in a frozen lake followed swiftly by the traditional Finnish sauna.     My trip to Arctic Finland was an absolute winter dream come true. Susanna and Juan Pablo were fantastic guides—engaging, fun, and full of energy. Their enthusiasm made the entire experience even more memorable. They really knew how to balance adventure with enjoyment and safety, making sure everyone was involved and having the time of their lives. The ice climbing was, without a doubt, the highlight. There’s something magical about scaling frozen waterfalls in the middle of a snowy forest. The rush you get from conquering those icy cliffs was a unique experience. Plus, the guides ensured we felt safe and confident every step of the way, making it exciting but also accessible for all levels. Besides some nice snowshoe walks - A truly unforgettable part of the trip was the dip into the magical ICE hole—a classic Finnish experience ?! After all the adrenaline from the ice climbing, plunging into the freezing water was both invigorating and surreal and whilst some group members could sit there for what felt like hours I could hardly make it for 10secs but I tried :) . There’s something incredibly refreshing about that sharp contrast between the icy water and the warmth of the sauna waiting for you afterwards. likely the perfect way to truly embrace the Finnish winter. I highly recommend extending your stay if you can. There’s so much more to do in the area—from cross-country skiing, downhill slopes, fat biking, Sami style wilderness skiing (which to my opinion is much more fun than snowshoeing!) and cozying up in a cabin by the fire waiting for the auroras to come. You’ll want to take the time to fully experience this winter wonderland. Susanna, JP and the amazing and unique group of people we were on this trip made this it unforgettable, and if you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, and a bit of Finnish magic, this is definitely the trip to take!

    Our trip to Finland was nothing short of spectacular! From start to finish, we were immersed in the stunning winter landscapes and thrilling outdoor activities. The snow shoe trek through pristine, snow covered forests was truly magical. Then the unforgettable experience that pushed us out of our comfort zones in the best way possible. The scenery was breathtaking and the sense of accomplishment was amazing. The hospitality, was wonderful, Tomas and Suzanna were super guides, with endless energy and support. Working hard for long days, their enthusiasm was contagious. A massive thank you to them. For anyone looking to go on this trip, it is full on and quite a challenge, but there is plenty of time and no pressure. I managed the ice climbing, with no prior training or experience in any climbing. I didn’t prepare in anyway for the trip, and was worrying before hand that I wouldn’t be strong enough. So don’t worry. . it will be great.

What do I need to bring?

  • Main suitcase or backpack
  • Daypack (20-30 litres)
  • Insulated ski jacket and salopettes (or hire an insulated onesie suit)
  • Insulated/down jacket (bring what you have and if it is not adequate you can hire one from your host. A large heavy-duty down jacket is usually required to put on as a top layer over your other layers to keep warm outdoors when not active)
  • Warm fleece or sweater
  • Thermal top and bottoms (wool/merino is best; avoid cotton)
  • 1 pair of ski gloves or insulated work gloves (or borrow from your host)
  • 1 pair of glove liners
  • Warm hat and/or balaclava (or borrow from your host)
  • Neck gaiter/buff or scarf
  • Multiple pairs of wool or synthetic socks (or hire/buy from your host)
  • Warm, waterproof snow boots (of similar type to 'Sorel Caribou' snow boots)
  • Swimwear (seriously)
  • Towel (for the sauna)
  • Something to sleep in
  • Slippers or slipper socks (for indoors at the lodge)
  • Crocs or slip-on sandals (to walk between the sauna and the ice dip)

FAQs

Your hosts are true winter adventure pros. They have been guides and leaders on trips around the world, and have gone on expeditions to Antarctica and Nepal. Their guides all have a minimum of Rope Activity Instructor certification, and many are also certified Ice Climbing Instructors.

Round-trip airport transfers on the SkiBus are included in your costs, or you can upgrade to a private transfer for an additional charge - see Optional Extras for details.

The Skibus travels between the airport and Pyhä several times a day; the journey takes around two hours. Check the current timetable – you'll need to catch the 18:05 bus at the latest.

To find the bus, exit the airport through the main doors; the bus stop is 30m away. The bus driver will already have your reservation. Show your passport and you’re good to go. The fifth and final stop is right by where you'll be staying.

Any excess luggage you bring with you can be safely left in your accommodation while you are out adventuring.

This trip includes locations or elevations where conditions can be extremely cold. Daytime temperatures may drop below freezing (0°C/32°F), and nights are often significantly colder. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of exposure-related issues, such as frostbite or hypothermia.

Your guide is trained to manage these risks, adapting activity intensity and monitoring group wellbeing. However, it's important to take personal responsibility – bringing the right cold-weather gear (see Kit List), staying hydrated and well-nourished, and recognising early signs of cold stress.

We recommend assessing your personal comfort and resilience in cold environments, and consulting a medical professional if you have health conditions that may be affected. Arriving early can also help you acclimatise to the colder conditions, especially if you're coming from a much warmer climate.

Winter in northern Finland is very cold, so be prepared for a truly arctic experience! In January and February temperatures range from -18°C to -8°C. In March and April it warms up a bit, ranging from -13°C to 3°C, with snowy days around half the time. Days are very short, but that just increases your chances of seeing the northern lights!

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 69kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
