Detailed Logistics

Transfers

Your host will pick you up at Krakow Airport in Poland at 16:30 on Day 1. You'll arrive back at Krakow Airport around 16:00 on Day 4, so if departing that evening, book any flight that leaves on or after 17:55.

Travel options

There are regular flights to Kraków from major airports across the UK and Europe.

Your group arrival and departure transfers are long (150km, approximately 3 hours) and include a border crossing. For this reason, private transfers are not usually offered by your host as the cost is prohibitive and you are encouraged to join the group arrival and departure transfers.

As the first and last day of your adventure are full days and the traffic between Kraków Airport and the city is usually heavy, it is not possible to be picked up or dropped off at a city hotel. However, public transport between the city and the airport is good. There is a train that leaves once or twice per hour, this takes 17 minutes and is very economical.

Alternatively, there are a small number of flights between the UK and Poprad-Tatry Airport. Private transfers between this airport and your starting/finishing point are not available via your host, however, the cost of a taxi is approximately €15-25 one way.

Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

To enjoy this trek you need to be reasonably fit, but if you hike, bike or run every now and then, you should manage it without any major problems. Previous mountaineering experience isn’t required as you are not going to walk in difficult and exposed places, however, you will be walking with crampons and shown how to use these effectively.

Climate Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely cold and consistently below freezing (0C/32F) during the times of year when this trip operates. Temperatures at night will likely be even colder. Personal care should be taken to keep as warm as possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration and nutrition. Very cold temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at warmer temperatures. In severe cold conditions people may experience symptoms associated with Exposure, Frostbite and Hypothermia. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with cold temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

We had another fab experience with Much Better Adventures. The trip was seamless, everything was organised so well and our group was wonderful. The Tatras Mountains are beautiful, we went at the end of March and there was lots of snow. The hotel we stayed at was great, and I loved the added touches of the thermal baths and sauna and jacuzzi. Our guide Andy was super friendly and we had a beautiful holiday. We will definitely be back for yet another MBA adventure!

This is my 3rd trip with Much Better adventures and it won't be my last. Once again it was a truly memorable adventure. Miro was a fabulous guide who navigated us safely and with fun. I fell we really made the best of the weather too which was quite challenging at times. Wonderful fun days in a majestic snowy wilderness. Liz

Thankyou for such a great introduction to Slovakia! Made perfect by the Fantastic local guide-Jan-knowledgable/kind and good fun. Really impressed with MBA, details of trip requirements/comms etc etc.

Lovely weekend in Slovakia, I could have stayed for another 3 days happily. Jan was a fantastic guide, full of knowledge and enthusiasm. He was paying a lot of attention to the fitness of our group and so was able to extend some of the days from the planned routes. The only thing I’d change would be to see if the closer airport works to start and finish as Krakov airport was miserable and the queues were depressing.

The trip was great! Nice small group environment with Jan as a wonderful guide keeping you entertains and safe. The hikes are manageable for average fitness and you're not walk more than 2-3hrs without a rest stop. Views are beautiful. The accommodation is comfortable and warm and the food is great! Would happily go on another trip with MBA.

A weekend well spent climbing the High Tatras. Wasn’t sure what to expect as it was my first time with MBA. It was a pleasant surprise as everything was so well organised from the transport to the acco to the food. The food and service were just great and the staff were so welcoming! A special mention to Jan - our guide - so knowledgeable, patient, professional and friendly. The instructions were clear, the trek was fun and he created a perfect balance ensuring all of us made it. Was wonderful discovering the mountains with Jan with his knowledge trove and experience. Thanks MBA! Looking forward to my next.

A fantastic few days exploring the High Tatras Range. The routes were interesting and quiet, meaning we had the paths to ourselves for most of each day. We were also in safe hands with Peter, our guide, who is a member of the Tatras Mountain Rescue Team and very knowledgeable about the area. Accommodation and food both very good. Brilliant value for money.

We had a wonderful few days hiking on this tour. Our guide, Patrik, was excellent – very friendly and easy going, but also very perceptive of how people in the group were managing. He went the extra mile to make sure that everyone’s needs were catered for and that we were all enjoying all aspects of the trip – not just the walks. We have not done a group holiday like this before, but everyone in the group was just lovely and we really enjoyed meeting and getting to know so many new people. The walks were manageable – tiring at times but not too strenuous. Walking with crampons was fantastic – couldn’t believe how much difference they made when walking on icy paths. The scenery was beautiful on all three walks. The hotel was very cosy, clean and well run with very friendly and helpful staff. The food was fantastic – the vegan options were delicious! Overall it was a wonderful trip and we would definitely do this (or another similar trip) again. Thank you Patrik for making it such a memorable holiday! Di & Stan

Where do I begin. . . . what a fantastic holiday in the most gorgeous of surroundings. The entire trip was brilliantly organised from start to finish with our wonderful guide, Patrik. He was a most excellent host, not only taking us on the walks but giving information about the places and interesting facts. Such a chilled out, relaxed guy who looked after us so well. Our group were such fun and a great laugh. The accomodation was really nice, a family run hotel. The food was superb!! We all looked forward to our breakfasts and dinners. As for the High Tatras mountains themselves, simply breathtaking. The snowy peaks, frozen lakes, wintry forests and cosy mountain huts for lunch breaks. I didn't want to go home!! Highly recommend to anyone to book a trip through MBA. I will be again!! Phil, Forest of Dean (England)

A brilliant trip to the Tatras mountains which were very beautiful. Fitted a lot into the 3 days. . . 3 decent days hikes in different areas, a visit to thermal baths and a viewing of some ice sculptures. 8 of us on the trip which was a great group size. Lucky to have Patrik as our guide who was brilliant. . . knew his stuff with a passion for the area, and also friendly and fun. Fully recommended!

This was our first time with MBA. Soooo impressed from the initial contact all the way through to the final drop off at the airport. Hotel was good and clean. The guide was so knowledgeable and friendly. Everything worked really well. Loved the WhatsApp group he set up - we could all swap photos. The kit list was ideal, as we didn't have any idea on how much to take.
  • Incredible Adventure

    Marc C. February 2026
Hiking Slovakia’s High Tatras was a really memorable experience from start to finish. Everything was well organised and easy, which made it simple to just enjoy the trip. Our guide, Jan, was fantastic- knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about the mountains. He created a great atmosphere and made everyone feel comfortable throughout. We had an awesome group, which added a lot to the experience. There was a great mix of people and a really nice energy the whole time. The food was also excellent. I’m vegan, and it was absolutely no problem — there were always good options and everything was fresh and satisfying. The scenery was the real highlight. The High Tatras in winter are a proper snowy wonderland, with stunning views and beautiful trails every day. A brilliant trip overall -amazing mountains, great hiking, and a really enjoyable experience all round. Would definitely recommend.
  • Excellent snowy Slovakian walking adventure

    Donna D. February 2026
Another brilliant trip with MBA. We’re so glad we booked this one at the last minute. As always with MBA it was well organised with our excellent guide Peter who was a Mountain Leader and rescuer! He ensured we made the most of the weather (and we had everything from snow to sun) by organising our walks accordingly. The hikes were a good mix of difficulty even if a few of us didn’t like using the crampons that much. We stopped in some excellent places in the mountains for lunch and hot chocolates. The thermal spa was a real treat and the hotel was good quality - comfy rooms with lovely home cooked food in the evenings. We had a super group of 8 who helped make it a fun trip. Would highly recommend. Think the summer edition would also be beautiful and Peter also recommended the Slovakian Paradise trip which we might check out for another year too. Bring lots of layers as you get warm walking up hill but it can be cold in the snow. Waterproof hiking boots are essential. We didn’t use our gators but you’d need them if it was rainy / very snowy.
  • An amazing place with a great guide

    Ian R. February 2026
This was an amazing trip, which I would recommend without hesitation. The was my 3rd MBA adventure, and they just keep getting better. The guiding by Andy (Andrej) was first class. Andy is passionate about the Tatra Mountains and it felt like he had taken us into his world for a few days. He organised the Airport collections, did the driving, and put much so thought into the food and drink for us all over the three days. The mountain huts he took us to were brilliant (one was a 4 Star Hotel). We were really well looked after by Andy and he was great company – both during the day and in the evenings, playing card games. We got lots of insight into the mountains and explanations on what we were seeing. The views were amazing – obviously weather dependent – but even on the less sunny days there are woods, rivers and waterfalls to see and take in – and hot wine or Tatra Tea at a hut. On our trip we had a day of brilliant sunshine, a day of lower cloud and some snow – but still great views, and a day of lots of snow. The variety actually added to the adventure – each day was different. The terrain is mixed, but certainly not difficult or particularly steep, no one had any difficulties. Walking in spikes gave excellent grip. Andy set a good pace and allowed the group to go at a pace that suited them – we were never rushed. We did so much each day – and rounding off two of the days at the Hotel Spa and the local thermal baths with a drink was a real treat. The accommodation was excellent, very comfortable and warm with great food. An unforgettable three days in the snowy, and sometimes sunny, mountains. Fourth MBA trip is already booked!
  • Book it, book it now!!!

    Ashleigh D. February 2026
Hands down one of my favourite trips. Beautiful scenery, good food, a truly top-tier guide (thank you Tom!), and the loveliest group of like-minded people to share it with. Absolutely magic. Two tips from me: Must try - mountain sweet dish parena buchta And if you are worried about the cold then it's not bad at all! I suffer with raynauds and am ALWAYS cold at home in England. Even in -13 I was taking off layers. It's a very different dry sort of cold. I did take disposable handwarmers though which were a God send at times!
  • High Praise for High Tatras

    Mel C. February 2026
Would recommend this incredible trip to everyone I know. Slovakia is stunning and the variety of walks and views makes this adventure different everyday. From mountain tops to forest to waterfalls and mountain huts and even sledding. This trip was everything I could have imagined and more. Tom, our guide was fun, knowledgeable and professional- top marks for a trip I would do again in an instant.
  • Dreamy weekend away

Couldn’t recommend this trip more. It was my first experience of group travel and it really made the trip. Our guide Peter was amazing also!
  • Highly recommend this trip!

    Demelza G. February 2026
Stunning landscapes, cosy mountain huts and beautiful snowy walks. Day 1 was approx 4hrs walking with breaks and Day 2 was a little longer but limited elevation for both. Seamlessly organised and so relaxing - I can't believe how much we did in a 4 day trip. Crampons and poles were provided. All we had to bring was good energy. The thermal baths were a perfect end to the trip. The guesthouse was really cosy plus great food & a lovely sauna area.
  • Weekend in a winter wonderland

    Monika O. February 2026
Very well organised trip packed with activities. We spent only long weekend but have seen and experienced a lot. A special thank you to Andrej - our guide. You were great!

Amazing few days. Sun and snow. Stunning scenery with dramatic mountains, snow waterfalls and streams. Great company. Excellent informative local guide with obvious passion for the mountains (Andrej). Fantastic trip highly recommended.
  • The best weekend

    Tom H. February 2026
Honestly one of the best weekends ever!! Incredible scenery, brilliant group, and a fantastic guide! Andrej was awesome. Really love Slovakia.
  • A great little trip!

    Matthew D. February 2026
I really enjoyed this trip. The 3 hikes we did were all great and I loved how there was always something to eat and drink at the top. The scenery was superb, especially when we had some sun and it wasn't cold. Walking up hill for a few minutes quickly gets you warm. The food at the hotel was super and our guide, Andi, was fantastic. I highly recommend giving this trip a go if you like winter hiking that isn't too hard. Also having a couple of days in Krakow too is good to add on.

FAQs

Absolutely. You can leave anything you don't need in your hotel room throughout the trip and just hike with small rucksack for personal items each day.

The local tap water is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottles (at least 1.5L) to fill up to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.

This trip includes locations or elevations where conditions can be extremely cold. Daytime temperatures may drop below freezing (0°C/32°F), and nights are often significantly colder. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of exposure-related issues, such as frostbite or hypothermia.

Your guide is trained to manage these risks, adapting activity intensity and monitoring group wellbeing. However, it's important to take personal responsibility – bringing the right cold-weather gear (see Kit List), staying hydrated and well-nourished, and recognising early signs of cold stress.

We recommend assessing your personal comfort and resilience in cold environments, and consulting a medical professional if you have health conditions that may be affected. Arriving early can also help you acclimatise to the colder conditions, especially if you're coming from a much warmer climate.

On any winter hike in a high mountain environment, you will potentially encounter high winds, rain, snow, ice and steep slopes. The Tatras Mountains are no different and you should be prepared to face these conditions. Temperatures can get as low as -20°C so multiple warm layers are necessary.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 122kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
