Trip level explained

Level 4

Moderate-Challenging

The challenging rating of this trip is largely due to the nature of the hiking to the summit of Mount Maglic, which is the most taxing day of the trip. On this day, you will need to be able to hike for 8-10hrs and cover a distance of 16km. You will be hiking next to some steep drops at times with a cable to hold onto (although you won’t be clipped on), so sure-footedness and a head for heights is necessary. There are also a couple of short, steep sections of scrambling on the approach to Mount Maglic's summit.

Other activities on this trip are more moderate in nature.

You will need to be able to swim to participate fully in this trip. The rafting is on rapids which may be between classes II and IV, depending on the weather and season.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

Boris was a lovely guy and a good guide on the ascent of Mt Mladic. rafting was fun but I felt the first two days walks were not exactly adventurous, felt like more of a holiday than a challenge, still a good holiday, helped by a great group

  • Martin L.

A great trip, exploring the beautiful scenery of Montenegro and Bosnia. The rafting day is perfect for breaking up the walking and the wine tasting rounded off the trip nicely. Our guides Boris and Mustafa were great guides, looking after us well and providing lots of insight into the region.

  • Joanna M.

The trip overall was wonderful. The landscapes and scenery in Montenegro and Bosnia are just out- of- this world beautiful! I really enjoyed the hiking and was glad that we gradually built up to the biggest hike of climbing Mount Maglick - which, for me, was challenging but absolutely worth it! Saudin was an extraordinary guide; he was so meticulous in his planning and care for us, always being so kind and providing us with snacks and advice. His love of the mountains and his country really shone out too- telling us stories and giving us a lot of interesting info about the history of the Balkans, the war etc. The rafting down the Tara River was also spectacularly beautiful; a shame that the rapids were very tame at this time of year (August). I was also well looked after as one of the only Pescatarians in the group but unfortunately the food was very limited and sometimes pretty bland. Interesting to try out different local foods and wine though. There was also a lot of travelling in the van and waiting around as we crossed the borders of each country which I hadn't expected. Overall, a fantastic trip with a great fun bunch of people. I'd recommend!

This trip visits beautiful parts of Montenegro and Bosnia with some stunning hikes and scenery on the road and by raft. Our guides were brilliant, very knowledgeable about the area, history and landscape and nothing was too much trouble.

Fantastic trip, great guides, beautiful landscapes and the wonderful Tara river. I would highly recommend

Lena was an excellent guide and host and so passionate about the Balkan countries history and current affairs which added to the overall experience.

Overall, this is a great trip for anyone who likes the outdoors and wants to exore a little of what Bosnia and Montenegro have to offer. I would say the hikes that we did were moderate. It would be worth considering that the summit to Mount Maglic is dependent on weather, and sadly had to be cancelled on our trip. Plan B was still a great hike, so we weren't disappointed for long. The raft down the Tara river is stunning and not to extreme at this time of year. We were lucky to have a great group and our tour guide Lela was great company with lots of local knowledge. We found the people to be friendly and hospitable. Looking forward to our next adventure with MBA!! 🤩

  • Richard B.

Great, interesting trip with excellent and engaging guides Jelena and Boris. Hiking and rafting were very enjoyable with a good itinerary with plenty of scope for downtime. Only area for improvement for me was flexibility on the meals, there were meat, fish and vegetarian options but you seemed to get categorised as one or the other when a mix inbetween them would be more preferable. Not problem to recommend this trip and company though.

This was our first trip with MBA but will defo be booking another. Easy pick up at the airport for onward transport to Bosnia to meet our other guide. Our Guides Lena and Boris were great. Good company, answered all questions, kept us on track (mostly 😂) during the hikes. Always explained the next day at dinner, helped us choose food when there wasn’t a set menu. They really supported during the hike to Maglić, esp on the more nervy bits. They seemed to have as much fun as us on the rafting too. It cannot be underestimated what these guys do as after the trips they then do all the behind the scenes stuff to ensure the trip goes smoothly and it did…so huge thanks to them both. Scenery was breathtaking, the Maglić hike was hard, but worth it. Accommodation was good, my favourite was the rafting camp. The doughnuts at breakfast 🤤! If you like being outdoors, challenging yourself, but also having fun book this trip!

  • Jasmine H.

My 4th MBA trip for a reason! Well looked after, great guides, the best way to explore these beautiful countries. The rafting camp felt so exclusive it was great. Maglić was awesome, particularly the scrambling! Felt on top of the world. As you fly into Dubrovnik it’s also a great idea to spend a couple days here after for more of a relax following a full on trip! No problem for us but it must be said there’s alot of driving and the food may be quite same-y if you have dietary requirements, but they do so well to accommodate for everyone and love sharing their culture!

    Bethany P. July 2024
My second MBA trip and won’t be my last. Well-organised and a lot of fun. I’m fairly fit but don’t regularly hike and this trip was challenging at times (Mount Maglic was difficult) but the other hikes I’d consider easy to moderate. Our guide, Sead, knew the routes well and prepared us each evening for the following day. The hikes themselves show the best of Bosnia and Montenegro’s landscapes - absolutely stunning scenery. There is more free time than the itinerary describes and a lot of driving - we were lucky in that it was a small group so plenty of room in the van. As a small group we were unable to do the Tvros wine tasting so went to a local family run one instead which was nice but different to what was expected. We took ourselves to another vineyard after to make more of an afternoon to try others. Food wise, we didn’t go hungry. All restaurants provided options (meat / fish heavy) and there are plenty of opportunities to get snacks. Overall I had a great time, if you’re looking for a half active half chilled trip in unspoilt Europe it’s perfect!

ou absolutely need to do this trip! And if you get Hamza as your guide, you will have the best time. Bosnia & Herzegovina is an incredibly beautiful country which deserves our tourism, as is Montenegro. The nature is breathtaking. This is far from doing 'a big walk' - but if you're fit and you enjoy challenging hikes with some scrambling and some heights, alongside some downtime in nature, this trip is for you. The scenery and surroundings are stunning, everyone was really friendly, there's a fair bit of driving most days to get to the next place but the minivan is really comfy and the drivers are excellent. The rafting is great fun but the raft camp with its communal area and big firepit right by the bar is even better - we enjoyed many bottles of Nikšićko beer whilst playing Uno on our afternoon off - great for group bonding! If you love animals, there are resident strays at every place you'll stay and they are really friendly and all well-fed and looked after by the hosts. You'll be really well fed on this trip! There's so much food at breakfast, lunch and dinner. I'm vegan, and I ate so well, every host went out of their way to cater for me, which I'm so grateful for. A huge thanks has to go to Hamza, our guide. He is an extremely professional leader, but manages to do this whilst also feeling just like 'one of the group.' You won't regret doing this trip - get it booked!

We lucked out on this trip with a fantastic group, a fantastic host and perfect weather! Almost all of us were in our 30s and the trip provides lots of evening flexibility to either do your own thing or hang out with the group. Most of our accomodations had good common areas for this! The hikes were very challenging but everyone made it to both peaks thanks to some great motivation from Petar who was a fantastic host! The hiking infrastructure in Bosnia and Montenegro is not super developed with things like toilets so be prepared to pee in the wild more than you are used to! Otherwise every detail was well taken care of and the food was amazing - I’m pescatarian and was very well fed throughout!

My second MBA trip and it was absolutely fantastic! Mount Maglic is tough and you do need a good level of fitness, but there are also some more relaxing days. The white water rafting is enormous fun, albeit freezing cold. Both Bosnia and Montenegro are fantastic countries to visit with some amazing scenery. We had the most fantastic group dynamic on this trip, as well as a fantastic local guide (Petar) and driver (Milan) both of whom were very knowledgeable and did an amazing job. I really can’t recommend this trip enough. Plus the local wine is incredible, as you discover on the final full day…

A generally mellow trip, don't expect to be very active the whole time. There's a balance between activity and just relaxing. A lot of dinners with the group, so maybe pack some nice evening clothes so you're not the only one showing up in workout clothes!

The trip as a whole was fantastic. The highlight for me that was summiting Bobatov Kuk in Montenegro. It's a lot higher than the mountains in the UK and looking up at it made it look like an impossible task. One thing to mention is the local guide, Hamza. What a guy! I think this trip was made so much more adventerous, fun and interesting with him as our guide.

FAQs

Your overnight luggage will be transported with you in the van each day.

In the event of poor weather such as heavy rain, strong winds and/or storms, it is possible that conditions may become unsafe to summit the mountains on this trip. Your guide will assess the weather on the days where summits are planned with your safety in mind. If it becomes necessary to make a change to the planned itinerary, you'll either hike as far as it is safe to, or be offered an alternative hike (which may be less challenging but safer in the conditions). Similarly, while poor weather is less likely to affect the rafting on this trip, if conditions become unsuitable for the activity to go ahead safely, your guide may offer an alternative activity.

We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.

You're always in good company on one of our adventures.

Our trips are typically made up of a mixture of solo travellers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.

It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.

Don't just take our word for it:

  • 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
  • 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
  • 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends

Summer is the best time to visit both Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as Montenegro, with daytime temperatures ranging from 24-30ºC, but cooling down in the evening and at night. Several days on this adventure are spent at higher altitudes where the temperature can be cooler, ideal for hiking. The weather can be wet at any time of year, so it's worth packing waterproof clothing.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 276kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
